I like how MK9 in a way, shows a lot about Liu Kang's development and shows Johnny's better traits. Liu Kang in MK9 is scoffing at Johnny not wanting to kill anyone, but MK1 Liu Kang would appreciate that.
I argue that Liu Kang didn't change Johnny much, he just reconciled Old and Young Johnny's attitudes.

In mk9, Liu was telling johnny to be respectful to raiden when all johnny did was expect raiden's compliment, and returned it by saying -nice hat-.

As the story goes on, we can see how Liu Kang learns to be resilient and compassionate with Johnny Cage. At least, in the new timeline they both have a better relationship with each other!
