New Indy Mogul community on Google+ Jeff: I feel like indymogul could make the shift to Griffin and Russ each hosting an episode of indynews or Griffin twice a week because a news show needs to be more than just weekly, in last weeks episode, Griffin briefly mentioned CES and by this episode, it's old news. If both current hosts posted an episode of the show on, say Mondays and Thursdays, a moguler made on Tues/Wed and a build/ tutorial on Fridays, they'd maximize a 5-day release schedule and viewer interest

I browsed your videos, but I didn't see a comparison of CMOS and CCD, if you've made one. Since you've introduced the CMOS Rolling Shutter effect, perhaps it would be nice to see a comparison. For my part knowing that CMOS chips produces the rolling shutter effect. I rather using a Panasonic AG-HVX200 instead of a DSLR. But for now. I still my good old Panasonic AG-DVX100A. Thanks for the reply and the cue for the Digital Bolex! This can be interesting!

There is one more critical thing. Some lenses have parts that stick out of the mount like many M42 lenses (for example helios 44 when close focused. You can damage your mirror or other inner parts of your camera. Especially if you have an camera with Canon EF mount (not ef-s, because ef-s lenses also have parts that stick out of mount plane) like Canon 5D, you can scratch or damage inner parts. Be careful!

Sorry, I've always admired and enjoyed your videos, but what you said about the rolling shutter is kind of misguiding, especially to beginners (making it seem there's no way to avoid it. To avoid a rolling shutter you lower your shutter speed. Eg. If you're shooting at 24 frames per second, you film at 1/50 and you have no rolling shutter (30fps = 1/60, 60fps = 1/125.

i still use an old cannon ZR900 is it bad to use an old camera like that for indie films i cant get a decent job until i'm 16 so about 408 days but my 15'th birthday is comung up in 43 days maybey i could get a better one do you know of any 400 dollar or less cameras that will work great for indie films and vlogs

All this techology and yet we have shit like moire and rolling shutter!
Both are easy to fix
1. make 8 megapixel camera that record 8 megapixel video
2. use mechanical shutter or ccd sensor with good cooling
This applies to professional cinema and video cameras!

Try finding some SMC Pentax M or K lenses. Or SMC Takumars. 35, 50mm and 55mm primes are great starters. Then buy some adapters from ebay (double check the mounts, there's M42 and K mounts, and you're good to go. Then after saving some more money switch to Carl Zeiss. :)

Hah, Due to the vertical black line in this video's icon, I thought it was Moire rolling and shutter. and that you would be talking about a music group (rock and roll for sure) or a comical duo. Whichever suits better.
Nice info as usual: D

Yeah, CMOS is cheaper to manufacture than CCD, and uses less power, which is why so many modern cameras shoot on CMOS, even RED cameras. The Blackmagic Cinema Camera uses a CMOS sensor, while the Digital Bolex will use a CCD (when it hits the market soon.

Do you have a list of DSLR or Cameras that still using CCD instead of CMOS? Is it true that a CMOS chip is cheaper to make? Besides shutter effect between the CMOS and the CCD, what is the best? Like low light, hight light, dynamic range, etc?

Hey Griffin! In my dream last night I got to go to your house and meet you! You even let me feel your beard! But then you put your chin into a pot of boiling water. and then I woke up: (

Griffin,
Can you show us how to build a soft box for a can light? That would be very helpful for me because I don't have the money for a good one.
thanks a lot,

Haha, it just so happens that there was a large section in February's Popular Photography magazine on lens adapters and it just arrived today for me. Double adapters. :)

Great explanation of Moire Griffin! I am a big fan of Toy Story, I must have watched it once a week when I was younger, so the live action toy story made my day!

how can i direct and act at the same time, i'm not sure how i can get my vision to my crew and make sure they do a great job?
reply

You talked about CCD sensors. But I can't find any cameras that use them. Are there any good cameras today that use CCD's?
reply

Good catch. I pulled that info from Wikipedia, and assumed it referred to a RED proprietary lens type, but I didn't investigate.

Indy news inspired me to get a camera and start filming. What small projects would you recommend for a beginning filmmaker!
