Shooting Photos That Actually Sell

You got the call. An opportunity to shoot the President / Biggest A-List Celebrity / Grammy Award Winning Musical Artist. There's just one problem Lubin: Honestly, what anyone likes in photography is subjective and not everyone agrees on the same thing. I'm not a fan of her edits, but at the same time her setups are what I would shoot often enough. And the biggest takeaway for anyone wanting to keep clients is repeat-ability. If you have a portfolio of a few images and someone books you, you can ask why or if they are looking for similar results. I find people don't come to me for portraits and ever ask if I can shoot in someone else's style. Creatives looking to update portfolios might ask that, but paying clients don't really do that. Clients search for photographers that have images of what they like and arrange a shoot with that style in mind. Makes sense. Just like when you search for a restaurant and see a menu online, and want to buy the food they have in the pictures and hope that it looks the same on your plate.

Another great one from our No-Budget Mister Rogers! (I'm going to milk that one so much that people with a lactose intolerance won't be able to read my posts)
I notice the subtle hints starting to build up in the videos. In this one it's less can be good, just be better with using less and talk to your talent for better performances. Sometime in the future, there will be this kid watching these and saying he didn't teach me anything I needed to direct my actors, to which Ted replies presidential portrait. But I need to look out a window to the city. $80 projector. But Ted, I have so much more to learn. Listen kid, I covered most of this back on Aputure, so just watch those and I'll pick up the rest on Indy Mogul.
Or Ted's just making this on the fly and getting a lot of airline miles out of this. Who knows?

If you don't reach out for customers, you don't sell anything. Pitch Ideas! No matter how bad or good your work is. I worked with celebs and it's all about knowing someone, unless u doing a project for a big brand were they pay the celebs, to work with you. Using light for Photos not gonna blew my mind, haha. Would rather love to see Brandon Li for travel filmmaking. He is working way harder then everybody else on his Videos. Fun video thought.

This was a great lesson for working with people. Diana's photos are technically simple, but amazing and I wish there was more talk about how she worked with you to get comfortable and posing like a rock star (side job, Ted. How does she work with busy people (President) to get those great looks. The best lighting in the world can't save a bad subject (at least in my experience.

What is the directorial process like, for example you have less than 3 or 5 mins to shoot subject A, how do you make them comfortable and themselves within such a short amount of time? My understanding is hi key celebs tend have that background, so how has directing subjects changed for you?
Amazing ep btw! Loving the new direction and content!

Doing Fotos is good training for filmmaking.
I did a few nude fotos and only used one light as a 45 degree backlight and the windos as a fill.
It is really more on getting your subjekt happy and in a creativ working mood.
For me it is compleatly different to filmmaking. It is a lot closer to jurnalism

Great video Ted and Di! its inspiring to see how a fantastic and above all suitable image for the job can be created with just natural light!
theres a few people in the comments suggesting its down to the camera. follow up video using a t3i? haha!

I shoot 90% of the headshots with Clamshell lighting using a single light and a reflector. It's very flat, but it SELLS. It makes almost every client look great. While I love interesting faces and wrinkles and such, most people hate theirs.

Love this video - just attended the Aputure lighting event with him and Justin Jones - was inspiring and learnt a lot about lighting for film.

How much editing went in to these pics in post?
Would you mind sharing the camera settings of the camera for theses pics

But photos look SO 90's tho. I think people are lowering the standards of photography nowdays. Useful vid tho.

Why would people look at one light like a bad thing? Most photographers only use one light ever. the SUN!

Peter Lindbergh photographed me for Harper's Bazaar magazine. I worked with him for 2 days. Great experience.
