Octopus Cinema: First Open Source Camera Indy News Audacious: Why is there always an open source or 3d printed camera that never comes out or ends up being some one-off camera. Like glazer had ONE CAMERA company custom make cameras for a film. then the company disappeared. Every two years there are custom cameras but i still struggle to believe the sensor swap camera is going to be affordable. First guess, battery & more-so data transfer rates (read/write buffers) must have high quality spec. Most cameras over-heat the higher the transfer rate + usage of battery. As much as I want custom cameras, I have built a few over the past decade and it isn't as easy to customize good battery usage & storage of RAW data. I am still impressed by Magic Lantern on canon 50d, which has all the same issues with heat & data storage limitations.

The one problem with open source products is that a lot of cheaply-made clone products happens to appear. The Radio Controller scaled vehicles and Arduino Micro-controller industry are good examples of this trend. But I do love open source products because of the complete control you able to gain over the products you are used to using. It's a complete game-changer when you can add & modify menus, values, and/or equipment.

The Octopus isn't the first open source camera to feature replaceable sensors, but it's the first one to seem to get out of the development stage and into production. There was someone at NAB several years ago, but he never got the funding to fully development the concept.
Also, ZCam has open SDK if you want to write your own firmware for the camera.
Really looking forward to the Octopus camera!

Hey Griffin! Love the weekly coverage of the film and tech world: ) that neural network for editing is cool, do you think any other jobs could be replaced by AI? For example, a focus puller AI that works off specific settings (like the Mia robotic arm camera) for each shot? Or an actor wearing a wireless sensor and an AI pulling focus on a lens automatically?

It's funny about the octopus since it's incredibly easy to build a camera. I'm interested in how they deal with UI and battery for their cam. I've been building a cinema camera for years using a flea3 sensor. Definitely mind blowing what USB sensors can do.

That camera.
DaVinci Resolve internally.
With the correct sensors, automatically level footage in camera.
Potentially choose any 16x9 area of the sensor in any orientation, effectively giving old school (LF technical camera ) shift.

AI will never be able to create art. It might operate on people, or defend them in court, but a soulless machine won't be able to understand emotions and create art that produces cathartic and profound experiences in human beings!

I always thought the word 'mogul' as in studio mogul is derived from the term 'Mughal' which was an Indian dynasty, and in western culture, simply refers to the upper echelon or the ruling class.

If AI can do colour correction, get footage from different cameras matching etc, that would do me. I don't want Hollywood look, or even Griffin look, I want my look.
reply

surely this definition of mogul is the actual reason: 'an important or powerful person, especially in the film or media industry'. Good to see you Griffin: )

BUT there are still cinema camera with an old sensor and have great footage, it would be nice if you can change the processor so it can keep up with the tech

It wouldnt be any fun to let an app edit for me, then it wouldnt be my edit. But I could see that one day taking over thousands of TV station jobs.

You can already swap the sensor in the Sony Vegas.
Arri and Red will be doing this soon.
This is pretty industry standard

An open source camera could be a game changer for beginners who want to break into the industry but don't have as much to spend

The Axiom Beta has been around for a few years now and is open source. However, the octopus cinema looks way more interesting!
reply

A. I editing? Why? Many directors are known for the distinctive way they edit their films. You really wanna take that away?
reply

Man. I remember watching this absolutely YEARS ago. Like crazy. Back yard FX stuff. It's been so long. Who else remembers!
reply

We had swappable sensors for the Blackmagic URSA. However there never where any alternative sensor turrets to buy.

Why is it Indy Mogul and not Indie Mogul? Is it an Indiana Jones reference, instead of indie film?
