How Much Do Music Videos REALLY Cost Challenging a Hollywood Producer

How Much Do Music Videos REALLY Cost Challenging a Hollywood Producer

FBTwitterReddit

video description

Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
Our friend and music video producer, Moses, shows us how music video budgeting is done and what are things to keep in mind while producing films. We invite Moses in and set up a little challenge - produce three music videos on three different budgets. We show him three music videos that he hasn't seen before and see where they potentially spent money. Moses creates a mock budget breakdown on Airtable and talks through the numbers and why he makes certain financial decisions for the production. You can watch the full music videos we reference here

nice video, very interesting, but you're not answering your own question, this is not how much a music video really costs (not any video for that matter) this is answering the question of how much do you think you can make this for and basically present a video to a producer and ask him to replicate it the same artistic way but with his own means for the least possible cost and this is not how music videos are made, no client will come to a producer and show them a video saying this is exactly what we want. plus your producer is applying his own method for designing the production of the videos he's been presented. present the same video to 20 different producers and you'll have more than 20 different estimates, most producers will budget different designs with different values for the same product (factoring in the client budget) so this is not how much the music video REALLY costs but more like how much the video would likely cost if your guy produced it and you totally skip the production optimization part where you negotiate, location scout, look for the best production system. the video is good in knowing how different producers think but in no way is it reflective of the buisiness as facts

i think we are all looking at this wrong. when you are in smaller production most ppl work for free or for an IOU. of course bigger budgets and crews requires everything to be done the right way but tbh a lot of videos be done beautifully under 5k. especially now days when you shoot, edit, and color the video yourself. i think most smaller artist dont care about all the big shots. they just want a drone shot and smooth footage and thats it. when you talking about bigger artist then yea, you paying each individual their rate because the video production requires a team. gaffer, dp, 1st ac, director, grip MUA, stylist and more. look at film riot. they just shot a short for like 100k and most of the ppl that worked with him did it for very low rates or free. thats how most production goes especially when youre freelancing or trynna get a name for yourself

Favors are great, but nobody is going to work for free unless they are young/inexperienced and looking to gain experience. This will make the quality suffer. Working for free is more common on a short film passion project, not a music video with actual access to money.
This producer is horrible. He isn't budgeting for any fringes, misc, etc. costs that will be incurred. The sprinter van for $50? That makes no sense unless he's asking a really good friend to borrow one for the day and he won't put any gas in it. He adds nothing for prep, unless he's picking up everything himself.

Few gems in here, but wow. Your rates are along the lines of slave labour for the services being provided. Secondly, how practical is the information you provided? Not so much, I would argue, acquiring talent at that level at the prices you gave is not realistic UNLESS you have a HUGE network of skilled professionals willing to take on the 'extra side job' on the weekend. It would be great for you to share the love and tell us fellow creatives, where we can contact these professionals at the price points that that you have happily pointed out.

I left the industry because of this. There's no money in music videos and even when there is a budget, it's so commercial; the priority is to promote the artist rather than the music itself, if that makes sense.
I'm now slowly funding all my own music videos on my own. I can't afford any of this shit; I don't have enough friends in production, and don't want to exploit others and constantly ask for favours.

I have been hearing horror stories of how amazing creatives like directors get paid almost zero to do such amazing pieces of art that helps artists get millions of views (and sell festival tickets, downloads, and millions for labels. Directors and other music video professional need to unionize like the DGA to make sure everyone gets fairly compensated when working with artists signed to major labels.

Hey, hope you still have time to answer a question. I was wondering how in this case the producer is still making profit. Cause maxing out the crew to a budget of 5k is cool to see, but is this 5k budget just the budget the producer is using besides his profit or is the 5k the actual total budget an agency is willing to spend. I was just wondering, because this really confused me watching this.

Them: producer gets $. $$$, director gets $. $$$, cinematographer gets $. $$$, editor gets $$$, asistants get $$$, the scouts get $$$, the rest gets $$$ or $$. All adds up to $$. $$$.
Me, a producer, director, cinematographer, editor, camera operator, audio guy, scout and my own assistant all in one: doesn't even get $$$: /

I am a director, dp, and editor, and people struggle to pay $400 i have never had a single crew member on any of the music videos I've ever done, seeing this makes me wanna stop music videos, BUT its my only way to finance and gain experience for my passion projects like films and documentaries

If you're a working producers and directors you can probably get it done for 500 or under but you will owe everyone on the next one. If you're new in town. Good luck you need 5k minimum for the first
video.

This dude's all get a friend who has 3-4 Aputure kits to come out
But then doesn't suggest a friend to bring a fish.
Methinks they forgot what reality is like with all that money lol.

Don't get why hard drives included in each video? The cinematographer and editor don't have hard drives? I'm still doing everything myself at the moment so just curious.

And here you are, trying to shoot a nice music video all by yourself and your friends feeling disappointed when it doesn't look like Shawns video
reply

Damn I went to college with this guy lol. Wanted to link up before our campus shut down but you were dead ass always busy. Hmu If you need a pa.
reply

You never budget to pay the person directing/producing the video, which pretty much makes all of this information totally useless.
reply

i'm very curious, why do HDD's go into cost? I'm a beginner filmmaker/videographer and still learning so much lol sorry
reply

He never really says how much the producer makes. How much does a producer make on a shoot like this shawn mendes video
reply

This video was sick! Loved the way the sound edited and went all like he was passing out when the pricing came up.
reply

So what does the producer make or the production company make if you spend the entire budget on the video
reply

I can't believe people would for 100 bucks to act in a Shaun Mendez music video. at least for 4 to 5 hours?
