First off, I love the show! And welcome back! 3: 06 It's not a large light source that lessens wrinkles. A large light source softens the transitions between highlight and shadows, or in other words, the larger the light, the less contrast. To lessen wrinkles, or any texture, it''s about the direction of light. Texture (wrinkles) is caused by shadows, and to create shadows you need off-center lighting. If you don't want texture, use flat lighting (straight on to the subject. Even a small light source, straight on, will eliminate texture and wrinkles. Think ring light.

My video production instructor was a stickler when it came to light a set. He was adamant that no different lighting levels or intensity was necessary for one skin tone verse another. His philosophy was to light the set according to taste and anyone that come into it will look fine. Back then 3-point lighting was the standard rule.
As for the teleprompter, there's a reason why the broadcasters use it. Stammering and stuttering is a good way to get your viewer to move on to the next video. As to sounding robotic, it takes practice to make yourself sound natural.

The Australian Broadcasting Corp recently had a BTS video of a reporter reporting live from the beach. The camera, I think they said, was a Panasonic SD. The microphone was out of sight in front of the reporter, below the video area.
The reporter wore an earpiece so he could hear base. It was in one ear, but vanished behind his head, invisible to the audience.
There was a cameraman, it would have been a lot for the reporter to handle the broadcast gear as well as shoot himself in the face.

Curious about that Azden mic. Can't tell from the description if/how I'd be able to use that with my XH1. I recently bought a Rode shotgun mic and should probably stop looking at others until I get the hang of what I've got. Also, just looked up and I managed to hit pause at a point in the video that makes it look like Griffin is fuming and/or furious at Ted.

I also use the image app for Panasonic as a wireless screen that sits just outside the shot. I have a giant android tablet (galaxy view.
Another tip is to just keep the camera rolling and cut in post for each major scene, saves alot of time if you are just one person since stopping and starting the shot takes time

My Neanderthal setup is clamping a chip chart to a light stand, setting focus then moving it out of the shot. I love the adaptation that budget film making inspires. By the way, you guys are making great content. You're really dialed into what people like me, (small crew) want to watch.

Thanks for these tips. What I've done when filming myself and I want to make sure Im in focus, is that I will set up my X-Rite Color Checker right where I think my head will be in the shot. Sometimes clamping it to a small tripod and placing it where I think my face will be.

I use a reflector boom pole with a sand bag counter weight to be my boom pole. It then goes straight into the camera with an old Beachtek. I frequently have a LAv and the boom going at hte same time and will mix between them.

The neon from the Indy Mogul sign being directly behind your head is causing encoding dithering artifacts as you move your heads around. It's not too bad but maybe you should move the sign. Great video!

I was surprised camera angles and staging didn't make it into this video. I guess you can't say it all, but those are just as important.
Love both of you guys! Learned so much from you.

Thanks again for a good video Ted & Griffin. Could you do a talk about light modifiers and what you can achieve with them. Eg why did you use the grid with your dome light in this video?

I shoot wipeboard videos. How do I get rid of the glare of soft boxes. It's a major pain! I've just upgraded my camera so I want my lighting to be on point. Any advice? :)

Griffin honestly didn't have to use that contraption. He could've just taken a lightstand, put his head on the stand, and then use that to focus. Poor mans filmmaking

I should use a teleprompter but I don't. I spend way too much time editing cutting out things that I mess up and then hide behind B-roll because of it, lol
reply

YES! I SUCK at reading from a script, but if i do a general outline, I just remind myself of the dot points and away i go, it sounds so much more natural: )
reply

I use the same script/voice over technique. I write it out and record it in scenes at the same time. That way the audio is exactly the same.

Great video guys. Ted - worth trying to get eye lights on people with tiny asian eyes and glasses? Or the reflection will be the killer?

That string is actually a useful tip. I will use it. I have a method I use, but I feel like this will be easier for me. Thanks!

Griffin's voice is too good, I'm in love with his voice. And similarly Ted's energy is excellent. You both are really doing a great job!
