One of the action-packed classics from the Super Scaler era of Sega arcade games! While the home conversions may have been played by more gamers, this review takes a look at the arcade cabinet original plan7a: : D - great classic game and review. The best things about this era were the cabinets, gave the game so much more than just playing a game. Space Harrier and Out Run always amazed and while After Burner was good also it was over too quickly due to the ratio of dying so quickly - as opposed to winning at it. But, it was still a great playable game all the same. I was mostly a watcher of arcade games then, I did play too (but not very well, but enjoyed spending a lot of time in the arcades.

-[. ] Could display 256 sprites on-screen at once with 4 tile layers [. ] This allowed for tons of scaling sprites at high speeds. -
Wow, you just described the GBA's graphics hardware exactly. Let me guess, can it display 32 palettes of 16 colours on-screen at a time too? (512 colours on-screen)
The only difference is that the GBA had an ARM7 CPU clocked at 16. 8 MHz which runs circles around the 68000 at 12 MHz, so the GBA SHOULD have had an arcade-perfect port (or at least arcade-close because it has less VRAM) of After Burner II (which is the same game as the first one, only better, but no, the Sega Arcade Gallery version is one of the worst versions I've played. Well, at least the other 3 games included in Sega Arcade Gallery are arcade-close.
My favourite port of After Burner II is the PC engine one, because that port really shows off the capabilities of one of my favourite game systems, it even surpasses the Genesis version!

The sitdown hydraulic unit in my local arcade back in the day never really impressed me, the back-forward hydraulic motion was good, but the left-right movement of the seat always felt a bit -juddery- and mechanical, not smooth at all. also the screen size wasnt that great either. Space harrier had the best moving chair system i tried. The r360 with g-loc looked amazing though, pitty there was only a few units in my country and they were 100-s of miles away form my house lol

Great review. I remember this frustration generator from way back when. I opted for Space Harrier personally - not that that game eased up on the cheap deaths.
Do you think you could hunt up Thayer's Quest and do a quick talk about that? I normally don't pitch requests - but I saw this game once, and once only and would love to see your take on it. Besides, it's an arcade game with a freakin keyboard. How could you not wanna talk about that?

Ahhh, back when SEGA kicked ass! That moving -rolling- cabinet was so much fun! It was like a ride, and when you crashed, the whole cabinet shaked! It was like a rumble feature before rumblepads! For years, we all thought these cabinets used hydraulics, but then a while back, I found out they actually use electric motors and wheels to tilt the cabinet! Pretty clever, actually. Space Harrier worked in a similar way.

Everything about the game is amazing apart from the game itself. I'm sure there are experts who can play it, but I never once felt like I had the slightest bit of control over what was happening, who I was targetting or being able to avoid stuff. It's just a random onslaught of stuff, or at least feels like it. It's barely a game as far as I'm concerned, not like OutRun or Space Harrier.

I just realized you never mentioned any of the other versions, especially the 32X version, now while I played it on an emulator on my computer, I did use a controller. I wasn't alive when these arcade machines were new and I never saw one for this game, however my dad was, he played it on the emulator w/my controller and said it was 1: 1. The other versions though kinda suck.

I'm glad you wasn't too hard on this, from your tweets I went in fearing the worst: ) As a kid I spent way more time watching the arcade demo wishing I had some coins instead of playing it, but it was still awesome to watch haha. Only really played it at length when the Mega Drive one came around, which I think was a lot easier.

Its too bad that they don't try to make games with 2D-scaling technology today. Sure, it's like trying to fit a square peg into an event horizon, but imagine how much the novelty could get a shot of major steroids with current tech (meanwhile the 2D-art department is posting my picture in 16-perspectives on a WANTED-poster.

It must have. been amazing to have that 3D sense of speed and excellent digital instrumentsamples and sfx back in the days of Topgun. The second bgm is my favourite, gives me goosebumps. That 360 roll and forcefeedback stick is amazing.
As a child I had alot of fun shooting missiles with so much trailing smoke.
