You totally forgot to say that carma2 has the most improbable and heavy rooster of cars available, including a WWII plane, a combine, a gas turbine powered bus, and the most game-killing car of it all: Pitbull's dump truck, 50 tons gigantic machine that is as wide as the road and too tall to go through checkpoints.
Carma1 always had been about stealing the heaviest car (Don Dumpster's earthmover) to have a chance to beat and steal the cop's 6 wheeled armored tank, but cars were still pretty balanced. You can race (I mean harvest peds) pretty peacefully with light but fast cars, mid-weight ones had a chance against heavy ones, but carma2 was completely unbalanced, there were just too many big vehicles. If you took time to farm a lot of money to buy the big dump truck which appeared only in one mission, the game was set forever, and it was a bit unsatisfying. Thrashing that formidable opponent was also a joke, making him crashing against a corner of a building was an instant kill without even touching him.
Carmageddon 4 is way more balanced in the spirit of the very first one, even the semi truck is not that tough because of it's snails speed. Beating the cop's tank is again a noteworthy, tiresome and rewarding combat and lightweight cars, having active offensive weapons like bladed wheels, has a chance to rip appart medium weight opponents.

Oh my god, you're so right. 1998 was a great year for PC games, racing games in particular. I played a ton of those great games that year.
I tend to kind of like the graphical aesthetics of the first game better than the second, but the second game seems so much bigger and better created. Like you said, the levels are a huge difference here. And after a relatively short period of time, I stop caring about the graphics aesthetics and I get completely immersed in the game (whether talking about watching this video or talking about when I actually played the game originally. That's a sign of a really good game.
I don't think I can choose one over the other. They're both great games. And the first one obviously has a soft spot in my heart, but so does the second one. I completely agree with you about everything you've said about both games, I just still can't decide which one I like better. I like them both equally.

I still play it. The sound doesn't work anymore for me, but it's still fun as hell: -
Also, The Eagle is pretty good, but later in the game you'll come across Synthea in The Thunderbucket, black T-Bird with white stripes.
It's great for the late game as it's got nearly the same speed and handling as the Eagle, but weighs much more (I think it was listed at 3 Tons. So when you ram something, it hurts like hell.
The special vehicles are fun, but they're more of an incentive, as they're not really practical for objectives (like Loggerhead, Don in the snow-plow, that guy with the mining truck, the Greyhound bus or that black Semi. The smaller vehicles are the ones to use for the jumps, sneaking to places to find secrets, hunting pedestrians through buildings, etc.

im not (very) ashamed to recognice i've probably played Carmageddon 2 over 3k hours. May be even more, it also had a lot of upgrades to discover, first you had to get the blue (i think) ones, then the golden ones, and save 50k cash for each. I remeber the lvl wich was the city, the one with the Dumpster truck, in wich roofs there were A TON of stuff, was a bit hard to get there but man when u did. And. i think there was Die Anna, but you faced her later in the game. Also i think the later levels increased the number of opponents from 5 to 10 gradually. I had a ton of fun wuth the jet bus, Mike something was the driver, if i remember correctly. Also the UFO over the pyramids. man, the feels.

For some reason this game felt too clean in terms of the maps and graphics to me. I also didn't love the missions so much, but I do think that some maps are just so fun to roam around, so all that other noise doesn't stop me from loving the ever-living heck out of this game lol!
I just hope the new one is good, I've wanted a new Carmageddon since I played this game a good while ago (I'm not counting TDR 2000, because, as a guy who grew up with the original and partially this one, its. ugh, lets not go there, and really the only game that's SORT OF come close to doing anything similar to this was GTA with a lot of mods.

Actually some of the other cars have certain advantages especially for missions. Purple Piledriver is definitely the best one for raw speed (which will come handy in that oil well mission. Plow Mk2 is the cheapest heavy vehicle you can buy and is pretty decent, one of the better choices for wrecking cops in the donut shop mission. Abba Cab is expensive but is basically the best vehicle for wrecking everybody fast. Bugga is weak and cheap but is the best one for the ski slope mission. My favorite all around vehicle is Thunderbucket. Excellent physics on that one, and good weight for damage. Kind of fast too.

You know, I just found about this game last year, I was a console kid with n64 and ps1. I had a pc at a later date, but only had one game. I really missed out on a lot, all though twisted metal and vigilante 8 I still hold close to my heart, but I am a freak when it comes to damage physics, and this blew me away, surprised anything like this was around back then, I mean most games after still hadn't had anything like this. Any ways, have you heard of a game called interstate 76? Might be a good game to do a video on.

I will forever cherish this game. I pretty much grew up with it. I remember my dad telling me I'd be sitting there watching him play it when I was as little as 3, when I could barely even talk. First got to play the game myself when I was 6 or 7. I remember getting stuck on the Group 3 mission where you had to kill those mental asylum escapees, so since I could never pass that mission I just modded the crap out of the game with additional cars from the Internet to keep myself entertained.

Unfair Funfair was the best - just near the start was a lane that ended with powerups for Pinball and Bouncy-Bouncy. Plus some TNT. Hit them at top speed and you'd quickly be gyroscoping a mile above the track, and if you didn't fall fast enough the invulnerability ran out just before you hit the ground. Hit them in the wrong order and you'd die hilariously. So really, no way to lose.

Man I watched like days worth of your vids and thought we have so much in common!
Until you said Carpocalypse > Carmageddon: O
Carma1 had so much more charm in it. Shockingly, I consider the graphics on the first much much better. A lot more style and harmony. Cars were cooler too. Nice 2d beats early 3d any day of the week.
