Give me liberty or give me DOS! Ward off the British during the American Revolutionary War, or capture the American commander-in-chief. It's up to you to eat cheeseburgers

You won't believe what i got for free today and then what happend. I got a toshiba T3200 laptop with 4mb ram expansion and a i386 cpu. This is the most minimum requirements for doom and wolfenstein so i was trying to get a copy of it when in the middle of my dos prompting (without loading the game) the laptop starts having smoke out of it but was still working so i unplugged it as soon as possible. Hopefully it was just the power supply and regulator that is faulty on it. If it is then it can hopefully be fixed or replaced easily. The red screen was also a bonus and was my favourite laptop for the 15 minutes that i had with it: ) Any tips on opening it without any damage? It also allowed for graphic cards which was super cool as well. It was infact a full dos desktop in a laptop form factor which is probably why it smoked me out.

I played this game as a teenager. I found it harder to play the British side. I played the super nintendo version. In it the British officers just were worse than the American ones. Then for that matter the Spanish and French really didn't come in untill the war was pretty much decided. I mean even when I played as the British they didn't really make a decisive impact at all.

The DOS version is the first release of this game. Later the console releases came, the best of which is the SNES version. The console version is a little more streamlined, the interface is better, and the graphics are more detailed over the DOS version. Give the SNES version a try and you should have more fun with it. I still play it every now and then even to this day.

Man you need to review shortline railroad for dos. It seems like a even crappier version of history stuff compared to this. Plus awesome 8bit sounds too from what I can tell. It was randomly in my grandmother's floppies(which with me growing up in the 90's I'm wondering when she would've had a dos pc, she had quite a few -shareware- titles. It's actually kinda funny.

The American Victory ending in this game is beautiful, it will give the player some goosebumps for sure, I only regret i've never been able to see the second ending, that one can be achieved if the Americans hold out until 1820, that's when the King of Britain dies, but it takes forever to get there in this game due to long waiting when you end your turn

Since so few of the comments bother talking about the game, let me be the first to say that if you like the old Koei style, you'll love LoD. That said, it takes real commitment to get through it. There's a lot to manage, and it's incredibly difficult.
Just make sure Nathanael Greene is around the most hotly contested areas. That guy is a monster.

I got this on SNES recently. and traded it back in (to get Shadowrun SNES) a week later. I love the idea, but in practice the learning curve is just too steep and there isn't enough -flare- to the gameplay to make it worth the time spent on the tedious aspects. especially on a console. If I give this another shot, it will be on DOS emulator.

Playing this game on SNES is better, especially on an emulator where you can speed the computer up. The one time I managed to win as the USA, the final battle took place in Mobile, Alabama in late 1816.
I believe the British will give up and abandon the war after 1820. I need to test that some day.

As much as I like crushing traitors (eg the American Revolutionaries) there are many better games nowdays to play out the American War of Independance, though it's still interesting to see this game and how much depth it had for the time.
And now I'm tempted to play Empire Total War.

I loved the SNES version of this as a kid! Though, I must admit, having the free time as a kid to grapple with all of the complex systems no doubt helped build my appreciation of it. Plus the superior graphics of the SNES version didn't hurt either. Thanks for covering it!
