I use and reviewed the ExtremeCap U3 last year and I couldn't agree more on the software (even though that still uses RECentral v1. x) AVerMedia has generally always made good hardware but their software is poor, as is the support of it. There is a persistent issue with audio sync when recording commentary to a separate track with the ExtremeCap U3. The software and firmware haven't been updated in a year and their support keeps insisting it's a problem on my end, even though I've consistently reproduced the problem on 3 different PCs with completely different configurations.
I don't know why they can't hire better developers or just place a higher priority on software because feature wise, I think RECentral is far better than the limited crap Elgato puts out. It needs more updates, more testing and their support needs to stop trying to blame every problem on the user. What it outputs is top shelf, it's just the process of doing that which is nightmarish.

Have quite a few AVerMedia capture boxes. I found that the HDMI passthrough degrades the image quality. You can see some sort of a fringe around fonts. I got the Game Capture HD II, and while it has a setting for limited and full RGB, this doesn't work for screenshots. AVerMedia refused to address this through a BIOS update.
I've got another product now, the Elgato HD 60. The software is better, less issues, and best of all is that it does 1080p60 at 40 mbps through USB 2. With USB 2 easily transferring 20 Megabyte per second, I don't understand the need for USB 3. I guess it saves them from having a proper encoder chip and doing it through software.
I'm eagerly awaiting a successor to the Game Capture HD II, with 1080p60 to an external USB drive. I find this device to be the most useful with the remote control and capturing without a PC.

thanks for the honest review.
i've tried the hauppauge pvr thing which was garbage and the avermedia live gamer hd which has problems with recentral as well. for me it seemed to encode the syncing of audio in a way that absolutely no editing software could handle (tried sony vegas and other applications with all kinds of settings.
i did find a workaround which meant re-encoding in virtualdub to get audio in sync before i edit. waste of time. i've given up on the promise of -easy recording of all your gameplay-. looking at their forum back then i was not the only one with massive software issues that were never fixed because the next shiny box was already out.

I'm hopeful Avermedia will eventually work, but I have a question as a current Live Gamer Portable User. The LGP has a serious problem with allowing you to capture audio when using a USB headset when using it to record your pc rather than a console. Often times it will either refuse to capture any audio or will crash. The -workaround- involves using the 3. 5mm audio rather than HDMI, but the sound quality GREATLY suffers from this. Needless to say, Avermedia never has fixed this problem even though they promised to. Are you able to answer if they have fixed it for this one?

It's saddening how poor video capture hardware is across the board and its all down to shitty software with bloaty additions thought up by their sales department.
I want a video capture device that does composite, svideo, component and HDMI, and on the software side all I want is the damn device to expose itself to my OS as a webcam and microphone.
Feel free to bundle a lightweight capture program too, something bog standard that uses normal Windows UI elements and gets shit done, not some glossy riced nightmare.

I am interested in the prospect of this for its ability to capture 1080p 60fps as well as having support for legacy devices. The question is, is there anything I should be considering other than this?
Based on reviews, I'd much rather go for an Elgato. Unfortunately they didn't think to include support for component/PS3 which is a bummer because I am interested in recording gamplay of older titles but don't want to sacrifice 1080p 60fps capture for newer titles.

They probably won't be sending you a new device next year after this review, but I'm glad you gave an honest one! There's a real problem with reviewers sugar coating devices especially if they are sent to them by the company making them or the reviewer is sponsored. This video confirms your genuine approach to hardware reviews and this kind of integrity is something many viewers likely will appreciate. Good work, LGR. Keep doing what you do!

I have a couple of questions for those who have used this card recently
first off does the software still crash this much and if it still does is it possible to use it with RECentral 1?
secondly does this card, when recording at full 1080p 60 fps have any really noticeable artifacting? from what I've seen of the Extremecap U3 when that card records at 1080p60 it has a lot of artifacting, does this card have that issue?

Have I been using the wrong capture card all this time? This is is the GAMER EXTREME. So that means it's for gamers, and those who want to be extreme. I'm a gamer, but I haven't been using this. so I guess I'm just a big poser.
I appreciate an honest review. Something with even this gimmicky of a name I'd assume has issues, and it appears that's the software on this one.

I cant believe these douche bags (avermedia) are still in business. Every single product that they made is crap. Starting from yearly 2000's TV PCI capture cards, their USB TV capture cards and etc was a half-working, product that had poor performance. And it seems nearly two decades didnt teach them how to write at least ONE working software component for their hardware.
