I know this video is old, but the characters daikatana uses don't mean 'big katana' or even 'big sword'.
the characters (hanzi or kanji, depending on if youre referring to chinese or japanese writing systems, respectively) -- mean 'dadao' in chinese. literally, this translates to 'big knife' but it refers to a type of machete-ish chinese sabre of some kind. in japanese, it's 'daito'. the words mean the same thing, ostensibly, because hanzi was retrofitted for japanese, but daito refers to japanese longswords that are 2 (or more) 'shaku' - a historical unit of length.
(i know im being kind of a pedant, but languages are super cool and interesting - imo - and i have to put my year of chinese to use somehow. and my semester of japanese. and 3 1/2 years of french, but thats irrelevant here)

Just watched this after seeing the new one I've only recently found your videos and they are great. I get the feeling though from the neuromancer bit that you don't know William Gibson. If you haven't read Neuromancer it is an amazing Sci Fi novel. Johnny Neumonic was written by him as well hence why the artist probably worked on that too. The movie is pretty poor compared to the books. Neuromancer is interesting because it was the book that inspired Timothy Leary to tell his friends to make a game about it, and that game was Deus Ex! Keep up the great work.

Excellent to see D2. I remember (having been raised rather strict conservative Christian) being firmly warned away from the supposed evil influences of that game, and still being almost hypnotically drawn to it on store shelves. And for years after its release too. It just stuck out so well, with that piercing devil stare, and the perfect composition, and color scheme. It's still one of the coolest box designs around.

I may have been a kid born in 1998 but for some reason I remember seeing Witchaven on a shelf as a 2 year old. I thought it looked really scary back then being a little kid and I just didn't want to look at it, but nowadays I see this and think it's actually pretty awesome. A dark tone indeed, but with much action. how I wish it were possible to recapture that new and wondrous feeling of older games nowadays.

It's awesome that you credited the actual artists that made these! It would've been cool to see the Might&Magic games (Xeen era, as to my knowledge the guy who drew the map and cover arts is actually a somewhat well known artist. Oh and you really should dedicate an entire episode to Psygnosis cover art some time. Hell I'd do it myself if I had all their games, but Agony and many others are expensive.

Hey, LGR. I was kinda shocked with the 6 CDS stuff. So: What's the game with the biggest quantity of CDs in your collection?
Also, fun fact (people my not know, though LGR might): Daikatana was the most powerful weapon available on Carmack's D&D Table and Quake was one of the Characters amidst this D&D Table. This is said on the book Masters of Doom by David Kusnher - REALLY Good reading.

excellent series of videos, i came across it when someone recommended i watch them because i had done a watercolor painting based on the civilization 1 cover; nice to see you share my thought that it's a great cover. one note, though -- the japanese on the daikatana cover isn't just mumbo-jumbo. the two characters are just dai and katana, and it means literally 'big katana' or 'big sword'

The Brothers Hildebrandt and the late Keith Parkinson (RIP) were among my favorite artist doing box art. Love the Ultima Online box art, and had that panoramic battle scene the Hildebrandts did as my wallpaper for years, and Keith's art for the Everquest boxes were so beautiful, it almost felt like false advertising that the game itself looked nowhere near as detailed back then.

As someone born in '93 and used to stroll the aisles of -THE INCREDIBLE UNIVERSE- (Fry's Electronics of now) with my dad. I love your videos. It brings me back to those moments where my young mind was enthralled and sometimes terrified of these amazing, 90s art pieces. Need myself a DeLorean time machine--- need to see Dante's Peak again in theaters and buy myself these relics.
