So many people (in the comments, around the web) seem afraid to openly call this their pick for favourite or best game of the year. I'm trying to pin-point why people have a problem with doing that?
I remember (in school) there was always a divide between kids who liked music that required a high level of technical skill to create (e. g. metal) and those who preferred music more raw/with more emotional depth (e. g. alternative, grunge etc. Those who preferred music that required a high level of technical skill would argue it's better because it's -difficult to play- (required more understanding/graft to create) but the others would argue that it's worthless if the music is superficial (lacking something to say, not provoking some emotional response.
Is it the same case here, where people think there's less worth in something created with a basic toolset and limited scope? The story, gameplay, characters etc. have gotten almost universal praise, but the lack of technical flare makes it unworthy?
Why is this less worthy of praise than something like Fallout 4?

just my opinion. Undertale has a brilliantly done soundtrack, well done characters and design, and it's simple pixel graphics take me back to a time where your imagination actually needed to be used during video games to fill in some blanks. I remember as a kid faking an illness so I could stay home and play Final Fantasy 4, and this game made me want to do the same, only now that I'm older I wanted to call in to work and just spend all day in that universe.
There is a great deal of attachment that I felt toward the characters even though the game does not tell me everything that I want to know. To me this is an awful lot like the companion cube in Portal. a lot of people find great meaning in that cube, because the game did a really good job of making you care about it as your only friend in a dystopian world.
The game is simple, short, and doesn't out stay it's welcome. Of course not everybody is going to love it, but that's fine: -.

For those of you who are anti-Steam like I am this game is also available DRM Free in the Humble Store. That's where I got it from which also gives you a Steam key if you want that so you get two versions for the price of one. This game really does mess with your head and one thing he didn't mention was that it will remember things in multiple playthroughs such as if you kill a monster and reload your save events will happen letting you know that the game knows you did that which happened to me once and it was interesting and a bit disturbing at the same time. The story as I've played it so far is very engaging though you will have to read a lot of signs to get the full context of it as far as I've seen anyway but interesting none the less. Check it out as he said it's only $10 regardless if you get it via Steam or the Humble Store and for most of you I'm sure you won't be disappointed. Now I just have to pick and back up and finally finish it.

The choice of combat choice to either kill or negotiate/talk to the enemy reminds me of some of the Shin Megami Tensei games. There ARE some that offer this, and you can get them to come to your side and help you, give you items, etc. They can be INCREDIBLY slow to start, but they are generally very good, like Devil Summoner and Nocturne. Persona games are also very good, and I'd suggest them if you haven't already played them. Persona 3 and 4 are touted as some of the best, though the original and what I've been able to play of the second one (there's two that are kind of called Persona 2, but one of them isn't talked about as much, because I think Hitler was the antagonist if I remember correctly, are good as well, but more or less trying to find their foothold. Also, P5 is supposed to be out this year, but I don't know when exactly.

What about how the game is incredibly self-aware? --even after you start a new game the characters will recognize that its not the first play through and they will act differently depending on how you played the previous game (pacifist, homicide, etc. Also how pacifist run you gain money from defeating an enemy through socializing but no exp which can make it challenging, but if you do kill creatures and gain exp it gets easier to defeat enemies and you get super OP but then you face a nearly impossible boss battle at the end of the game. There is so much to undertale that just makes it such a great game--not to mention all the charm and emotional resonance it provides

Thanks for the video. This is a game that everyone should check out.
Alongside games like The Stanley Parable and 80 Days, I'm glad developers are creating games which take interactive experiences one step further.
The shooting and killing stuff paradigm has been around since Space Invaders days and there's so much more that can be done. Games should be about optional violence, engaging storytelling which cannot be achieved in other media, decisions that really matter and Undertale is crearly a success regarding all that.

Hmm, might be interesting but I like da graphics. I can't play a game that looks this bad. I'm not a snob, a snob would think people who do are lesser whereas I don't give 2 damns what other people play. No amount of hype could make me look at that for any given amount of time though. Back when I was on the 8 bits all I did was dream of the day when games would look like they do now and I've no desire to go back. I like watching LGR review all these old games for nostalgia sake but I'm done playing them.
Thanks.

This is absolutely my favourite game so far this year for me (will Fallout 4 take that title? we'll see. All the characters are interesting and likeable, even the monsters. The writing is funny as hell. And the way it constantly subverts your expectations, both in and out of battle, is genius. Not to mention the awesome soundtrack! I cannot gush enough about this game.
Some may call it 'overhyped', but in the end its different strokes for different folks isn't it.

Watching this video now in 2021 and seeing how this game I remember all the high school freshmen chatter about, blown up to a cultural phenomenon of fandoms upon fandoms, fanfictions, fanfictions about fanfictions, numerous soundtrack remixes with millions of views. All that from a one thousand dollar Kickstarter is pretty amazing. Glad you enjoyed the game as much as we do, Clint.
Highly recommend Super Eyepatch Wolf's video about Undertale. That was a wild ride.

Good review, basically agreeing with everything. I'm surprised you didn't mention the music and that Toby Fox composed for Homestuck (which I don't like nearly as much as this game)
The hype and alleged negative review censorship put me off the game until last night when enough close friends convinced me to try it. tumblrtale isn't the GOTY by any means and it's absolutely not perfect but I'd be lying if I said it wasn't great and I didn't enjoy it.
