This game looks really fun as far as a platformer goes, but wow I agree about the humor. It's like it assumes it's target audience is 16 or something. Just because we want to play old school games that remind us of when we were a 16 year old, doesn't mean we still have a sense of humor of one. Most of us have grown up, would be nice to see a company respect that fact. Other than that, I mostly see a lot of things that could be better, but based on what they've done right, I can assume with fair accuracy that it's appropriate to have enough faith in them to fix it. Hopefully, the testing audience is vocal and critical of what works, if that happens then this could be a huge hit, if not, it could get lost in the sea of mediocrity that we swim in far too often these days. Hopefully, it comes to Steam with a reasonable price and a lot of polish. If so, i'm game.

While I understand LGR's point, as some other guys pointed out, perhaps he is just not the target audience for this game; I personally love old plataformers, and while I do understand that getting up to the Energy Zone in Contra and running out of continues sucks, if you keep trying, the next time around you are going to do a little better, and eventually you are going to be able to beat it. That feeling of getting your ass kicked so hard and so much, and then being able to kick the game's ass, there's just nothing like it.
If the consequences for losing aren't high enough, you don't ever need to grow better. Lives or continues are perfect for this.
But yeah, I do agree that adding an easy mode for people that doesn't enjoy a good beating is a smart thing to do.

I dunno, man. From what I saw it seems like pretty solid gameplay, even the lives system and it's early access. Truth be told, I like lives systems as (even though it's not an arcade machine with quarters) it gives players that sense of -don't mess up! this counts- I can't begin to tell you how many modern games I've played that I honestly don't care if I die or just the game off. Then I go back and play Battletoads and RoboCop vs. Terminator for Sega Genesis and dying in those games gives me more of a -YOU failed- feeling. Sure it's frustrating, but I really don't think games like this are meant to be a walk in the park kinda experience with no sense of urgency. Anyways, that's just my 2 cents.

For the most part I do not enjoy platformers.
One thing that I would like to see in similar games, regarding lives, is having lives but using them as a scoring mechanism instead of limiting.
At the end of the level (and game) you get to see how many times you used, which then affects the final score. This way if you like the game you want to improve your play without the limitation of limited number of lives.
Anyway, I am glad 3DRealms listened to your input, very nice.
The character on your back and how he helps you grabbing items and moving, reminds me of some other game but for the life of me I can't remember which one.

Well, as he mentioned Jazz Jackrabbit; Jazz Jackrabbit 2 had 5 heart system, every level that you passed you are given an extra life which is of course 5 additional hearts. So, when you pass the early levels, you became already stocked plenty of chances. MAYBE, this game follows the same system; LGR should play longer to find that out. Note that JJ series released for DOS, Windows and Mac OS; not for arcades or consoles.

Looks decent enough. But I'm not sure these types of games do it for me anymore. I immediately bought the Giana Sisters remake when it was released, but I quickly realized I simply didn't enjoy the gameplay. I think the only platformers I've really enjoyed over the last 10 years are the Trine games, Limbo and INSIDE. But those games also pushed the boundary of what a platformer can do. This pales a bit in comparison.

This is why I can't get into many older games like sonic. I like the game, but then I get partway through and rage when I loose all my progress. As you said, it makes sense in arcades because they want you to keep paying, and I even understand arcade-home ports because they don't want you to only play the home version. But in a game that's ONLY on PC/Console, why the heck do you have to have limited lives?

So, from what I can tell, it looks like they put all the early effort into making a game that looks and feels visceral and solid, and are (hopefully) leaving the unique elements of gameplay till later on. A pretty good plan! Many developers do it the other way round and end up with neat ideas that just feel flaccid.
I'd definitely need something more before I'd consider buying it, but it could work.

This really is the problem. I haven't backed this yet even though I've seen it before. I WANT to like it, it looks like the game would be really fun if they smoothen out those rough edges (and I mean really, going from a cube to a sphere. But god damn those cutscenes are so cringey. I can't deal with it, and I can't imagine playing an entire game with that sense of -humour-.

My problem with the game so far is how some of the sound effects, like the collecting sound, seem to be done with that free random game sound effect generator. Imho it just sounds cheap and lacks a sense of style.
That said, what I've heard of the soundtrack is absolutely killer, and I've backed the game almost entirely because of that.
