If you're a fan of Quake, Redneck Rampage, Heretic, Half-Life, Doom, Duke Nukem 3D and other late-1990s FPS, then Dusk is quite the treat. These are my initial impressions! - Dusk is available here on Steam

I played the demo and was so positively surprised that finally one of the retro-hyped indie FPS does it right. I love and still play oldschool FPS, lamenting for some new with the old level design, but always there is something dissapointing with all the retro-wanabe attempts. I was a bit skeptical with the retro-indie-FPS, most of them didn't do it well and especially they were roguelike, so no real level design. Now Dusk episode 1, omg, so nice and mysterious single player levels, atmospheric secrets, finally that kind of level design. And then they just do all the rest, player movement, gameplay, etc really smooth and well too. But that classic level design, with unique levels you want to explore, unique secrets, connected areas, atmosphere. This is Dusk!
That only makes me hopeful for the future of the genre, maybe more indie or newschool FPS with level design will come out. I don't mind if the graphics are intentionally retro or newschool, but the level design aspect of it, to make you wanna explore every corner and find secrets and mysterious room you don't even imagine what they are for. That feeling.

Honestly, this game really starts to dip in quality toward the end of episode 3. Episodes 1 and 2 are excellent though and have some of the best levels I've played in any FPS. Even episode 3 has some great levels in the first half, I just kinda feel like they went a bit too far when trying to wrap up the story in some horror twists. Minor spoiler: making a Quake-style game and then having one of the last levels be a wave-based arena shooter was not a good idea. Same with hiding the enemy count and making the floor barely distinguishable from the void. A really cool idea for a horror game (there's nothing creepier than when the UI itself turns against you, but I never felt like the game was seriously trying to be a horror game up until the last few levels.

I don't think it does it for me. There's a difference between dated graphics and graphics trying to look dated. There's a history that permeates games like Quake and Doom, their age adds a sort of awe and emotion to them like an old classic car. When I play Doom I wander the levels thinking about what it must have been like to be the ol' 20 something ID guys working on this while listening to 90s metal and eating pizza.
I don't think I get this feeling for this game, or any modern games these days really. It's a fake, like an old model-t that looks old but then you find out that it's brand new, built from one of those antique car kits.

I don't get the 90's vibe at all. Instead of going with tech limitations and doing the best with them, this feels like some crappy Steam shovelware, retroactively downgraded for that nostalgia appeal.
I for one love the 90's shooters despite the tech limitations, not because of them. They allowed devs to make amazing games, because they had to choose what is essential for their game, not because big pixels, low polycounts or color palettes were strengths on their own.

Really looking forward for the full game, pre-ordered it yesterday and played the first 6-7 levels. While I think the enemies move a little bit too slow, the gameplay and feeling itself is a really, really nice hommage to the mid-90s. I would have preferred a game with sprite weapons and enemies instead of low-poly models - I'm more a fan of those 2, 5D games like Doom, Duke 3D and Shadow Warrior - but the style is also a nice hommage to Quake, which is obviousely based on.

Just picked it up on Steam sale the other day, one copy for me and one for my son. He reports it won't launch on his Windows 10 desktop (not sure what error he's getting or what the problem is, and while it loads up on my Win7 laptop the mouse control is so laggy/floating it's basically unplayable. I'm hoping it'll play much better on my Win7 desktop once I get around to trying that. I'm looking forward to being able to play this game, hopefully with my boy!

This game is legit good. A lot of games have -payed homage- to old games like doom, but those get stale after the nostalgia is over. DUSK is a true doom-style game. Honestly its almost like someone said -what made FPS good then, what makes them good now, lets just put those together- This game has a lot of mobility, which is something doom was kind of lacking in. I can not wait for more episodes, and I'm assuming a multiplayer.

Looks like an awesome jump back into the 90's. It reminds me a lot of Quake 1.
I do think Doom 2016 on Nightmare is a good emulation of first person shooters in the 90's as well though. But they had to add a few cutscenes in order to keep it a bit more modern. Nothing wrong with that.
This game could potentially be in my top ten faves, from the way it looks.

So excited for this one. And it's only gonna be $20? Holy cow that's a value. I love these sort of throwback titles but I hate when they just do the thing from the past without changing anything from the past that didn't work so well. Seems like these guys are actually taking the time to ask themselves what worked, what didn't and, why.

I never grew up with this type of games, but starting to play this type of games recently, I can see why a lot of people are fond of this type of gunplay and esthetics, I can definitely see that, at least for me that this type of the games such as quake and blood ( the first ones) as age extremely well, like a fine wine.
