The Quake 2 stuff reminded me a of the experiences I had recently, when I tried to get it running so I could convert some old multiplayer demo recordings to video (to share with some of the people in those recordings.
I initially used the steam version, thinking that maybe they'd done things to make it a better experience on a modern PC, but nope! I saw how dark the game was, saw how the brightness slider didn't really help much, remembered that this was a texture palette issue that affected pretty much all non-3DFX cards (requiring tweaking several console variables to fix properly, and that was enough to send me looking for the backup of my old install (where I'd gone through the effort of tweaking things with my PC running next to a mates that had a 3DFX Banshee.
Old install was much better, and seeing how much my custom UI improved things on a modern resolution me appreciate all the work teenaged me had done 20 years ago (though setting a modern wide-screen resolution actually involved the use of a hex editor on quake2. exe - setting custom resolutions wasn't introduced until Quake 3.

Excalibur 2555 is a really weird game, the 2555 makes me think it's a futuristic game but quite the opposite. I have a copy of it on PS1, it runs better on PlayStation: )
I was often messing around with themes on Win98 but they just weren't good. Later I settled on a gradient color from deep red to yellow on the top bar and I had the Quake 1 menu sound effects as the start menu popup and start menu click and these were all the customization I did to my system. Ohh, and I had a cool teal background color when I didn't have a wallpaper on and the obligatory startup and shutdown sfx. My startaup sound changed constantly but the shutdown sound was from Forsaken, when you were killed and you had your bikes computer sound HK5-whatever is said -Shutting doooooown. - in a slowing down manner it was cool like the 90's: )

Mmm I found watching you explore these old cd packs to be great. How they are poorly thrown together. Screensavers that don-t work or are Incomplete. Hehe.
I especially liked seeing the windows theme being applied. I had forgotten all about doing that kind of thing. Ahh PCs were so much cooler when I was younger. I guess they are cooler in a slightly different but probably better way, these days.
The CD reminded me a lot of those CDs that would come attached to the front cover of a pc gaming or utility mag back in the 90s and early thousns

The nice authentic Windows 98 experience. Video card compatibility issues with older games, things just inexplicably not being able to find cds or run based on. nothing at all. And then getting a cd full of what you think are going to be fun games and yet turn out to be shareware and other things so you feel bad begging your parents for that rad looking game compilation, only to realize Deus Ex is a shareware version that they (probably illegally) are reselling unlicensed on a disk in best buy for some reason.
Aaah, the good old days.

I do not think this resemble the real hardcore gamer, because japan is the mother of all gaming, so you gotta have 90% kawaii games if you rly want to consider yourself as a hardcore gamer. period. you games are just for mature people who waste most of their time to work than come home and have a little quake game season. But the real hardcore gamer never work, because he need that time to play japanese porn games on VR. gaming is filthy, if youre innocent youre most likely a casual gamer D;

The back of that box just screams 90's extremely over-hyped, overreacting marketing methods.

OHHH COMBAT Flight simulator 98 was my first real love with video games! ( i remember buying a 30$ joystick and doing all the flight trainnings and combat trainning. I was like 8 yo )
Thankfully my parents had to have a PC for work since Windows 3
Honestly helped me alot when I jumped in War Thunder, lots of manoeuvers came back to memory and in a instant I was pwning noobs.

Holy shit I-ve never felt myself so comforting feeling myself of age of seven playing the best pc in the neighborhood in anticipation of Christmas and new year and having a cousins Programmer that was able to preinstall these games onto the hardware and to stack several of them into my cupboard
Christmas holidays, rides on the sleigh ahha

reply

Whenever you see an old game that runs too fast on more modern hardware, it's usually the fact the programmer did not multiply by the Delta Time (or time since last frame. Not doing this means all of your calculations are frame-based which is bad. as FPS increases, so does the speed of your program/simulation.

Incidentally, the most useful of those Diablo hacks. was either Diablo Eye, or in some versions Eagle Eye. It allowed you to tab out and inspect the gear and stats of other players in your game. It would tell you if something was duped or illegal. as most of these invading turds were there to ruin your game.
