Nintendo made computer peripherals in 1997? YEP. Enjoy this history, setup, and demonstration of one of the more odd and obscure Nintendo products I have in my possession

The IBM joystick port supported 2 sticks in one port, you had to get an annoying Y-splitter if you wanted two sticks. It supported 2 analogue inputs, up/down left/right, per stick, and 2 fire buttons.
So that gives you 4 analogue inputs and 4 buttons if you pretend to be both sticks, and I think that's what this does. Looks like the joystick is wired up as joystick 2, with the twist and throttle being joystick 1. The 4 buttons are both sticks' buttons added together.
I once had a joypad that went further with 8 buttons. It used the first stick's inputs for it's D-pad, the 4 buttons, but then implemented 4 more buttons by pretending to move the second stick up /down / left / right.
These schemes seem semi-common. So I think the problem with the stick in the mech game is that you should have set it to read stick 2. Maybe some schemes were known to games of the time, and maybe the 123 switch on the bottom collaborates with that. But that's what you're dealing with, with joystick-port sticks.
You might remember the official PC joystick from way back when, it was an analogue stick that looked like something for air traffic control, with it's two ugly buttons on the side.

I'm legitimately in shock! I had no idea this thing was not popular. All of my friends had them. We used to play PC games all the time with these and were so bummed that we couldn't use it for Star Fox 64. Now that I know that it wasn't successful, I have to imagine that our parents bought them because they were on sale for dirt cheap and said Nintendo. Crazy.

I came across this at big lots (discount/clearance store ) when I was a kid, I was so excited by the idea i could play starfox 64 with a joystick. When i came back a week or so later when i had the money i was beyond disappointed when i realized it was pc only. A n64 branded and styled joystick for pc just made no sense to me. Still disappointed to this day.

As concerns G-Nome. was the problem possibly to do with you selecting various different joystick profiles, but at no point clicking the -Load- button underneath? ;)
Seems like it would be one of those unexpectedly easy things to miss, as normally you'd expect that when you pick something off a dropdown list it takes effect immediately.

Hey, Clint. I added a line break to an old comment of mine and it suddenly disappeared- probably because it mentioned a long-defunct website related to the joystick but it wasn-t filtered before so I dunno. In fact, someone had just responded to it. Mind checking for filtered comments to re-approve it? Thanks!

I was in 4th grade (1997) and had a copy of Computer Gaming World holiday edition, with the weird Monster mascot on the cover, and I remember seeing an advertisement for this flightstick and I was so confused by it, especially the no compatibility with N64.
Still, an exciting time to be alive.

My guess is that Nintendo simply allowed the license to be used for the sake of merchandising. During the N64 period, Nintendo was slapping the N logo, and Super Mario 64 stuff on just about everything, including things that had nothing to do with video games (such as cameras and radios.

It seems to me, sorry for being 4 years late to the party, like the LAral group wanted to make pc peripherals high end expensive ones, and they felt the Nintendo brand was going to give them the edge to break into the market. I would imagine.

Man this takes me back. I played Doom for years with a CH Flight Stick Pro. My friends thought I was crazy and I only switched to mouse and keyboard when I started playing online death matches with them.

If it's a Nintendo product from the time where the Nintendo 64 was the newest Nintendo console, why doesn't it work with the Nintendo 64?
It seems like a very not Nintendo thing to me.
