Even as a 35mm film camera enthusiast, who will regularly spend 16 for a roll of film and then 25 developing and scanning it at a lab, for a cost of 1. 15 per photo, it's still crazy to me to think that just taking a picture wasn't free for so many decades. When I'm taking film pictures, I'm trying to compose art, it's not like just grabbing my phone and getting a picture for posterity. The idea that it was costly to recall images through photographs for just, the general everyday life we experience, it's crazy. Taking a photo being a free thing now makes it a shortcut for so much. Want to remember what this restaurant has on its menu? Picture. Forgot to take notes on the slide and the presenter is about to switch slides? photo. Want to record the odometer reading at the oil change you just did? photo. Your odometer hit a palendrome? photo to show your friends. If each of those cost 2 we wouldn't use them for everything like we do now.

late 90's early 00's I worked at as a Walmart 1hr photo developer. We had got the new frontier digital photo printing system that took the digital content and created photos through the same system as our 35mm. It was and still is the best digital printing you could get. It took high res photos from your digital camera and projected it onto real photo paper that was chemically processed. In high school I was very involved in the technology teams and we had several of the sony mavica cameras because of the easy and cheap floppies that we used to take photos for newsletters, our first school website (that I built, and even to use for our yearbook. If you take my school yearbooks from 99-01 99% of the photos were all taken by that Sony Camera. I carried at least a pack of 50 in my camera bag for every event.

Well let s 1 thing to be really clear, this diskprinter along with it s disk camera is much much better then nintendo s gameboy printer and gameboy camera, sure it was a toy but still i just couldn t see why nintendo did this, did they wanted to get entry level people into photography, also am stun how later games even did supported the gameboy printer since it s quality did left alot to be desired, in fact am disappointed that nintendo never came out with a follow up of their gameboy printer, for instance they should & could, ve come with a DSI printer to print fotos from both the dsi and 3DS in color, that would, ve been great, but sadly they didn t,
BUT apart from this sony diskprinter is a must have for orgenizations and institutes and schools to print party stuff with it etc,

When i was a kid i diddent even know you could have a digital camera that would take pictures onto floppy drives. And with 1. 3MP images, i cant imagine you can have a lot of images on a 1. 44mb Floppy. So you would have to carry quite a few floppies around with you. But i think its cool. I love floppies. And the fact that you can just put a floppy right into a printer and print out your images in what looks to be high quality, is pretty awesome, and then you can also print images from games and movies if you wanted? You could really make some cool calenders. Like you could make them with Star Wars, Crash Bandicoot and Jurassic Park if you wanted. I think its cool. And we really dont get a lot of these things these days as no one really prints photos any more.

never seen one of these before. I remember seeing the Mavica cameras, and how one of my magazines had a Mavica ad with a floppy glued to it (which contained a presentation of the camera, but don't recall ever seeing the printer. Does have some resemblance to the weird photo printer HP made that had a built-in dock for their crappy cameras, but don't recall it printing it nearly this good quality.
In the 2010s it was still normal for printers to have memory card readers and being able to print directly from cameras, but nowadays it's gotten so much more complicated because they apparently assume you either use a photo to take photos or don't want to print them

4: 26 - it is the same device they have in The Ring when Rachel visits the video editing place to print out stills from the tape! Look up the scene, it's on YT, the ring fly scene.
This is an awesome little device, pretty expensive but if I had one I'd have printed everything I had back then! I used to love taking pictures of everything with my little compact camera.
13: 47 - the beeping is the same or very similar to what a PS3 does when you press the eject button but there's no disk inside: )
15: 14 - this is an amazing way to take screenshots of video games, I wonder how many magazines used this (if any) for their screenshots! My mind is blown!

If only modern printers actually functioned. These days they gouge you on the ink. The last printer I bought literally didn't even print 50 pages before claiming the ink was low. You used to be able to print a literal ream before that warning, and still be able to go to 1000 or more pages before actually needing a new cartridge. Even in the mid-late 2000s I remember buying refills for cartridges back when that was still possible. I'd rather have a 1000 printer that just lets me print and doesn't hassle me

That whole entire market that failed on inkjet printers and prints in general. Take tons of pictures and then save them until the hard drive dies. Never print them out. as for Dye sub printers. Sold the Fargo Primera printer. Somebody should find him or get him the Polaroid video capture printer that uses 600 film. I also know they had a few other printers. Then later versions went to ZInk and Dy sub. But that would be considered to new.

I had no idea that printer was even a thing. Pretty cool. I had the Mavica FD85. Walking around Manhattan with a pocket full of floppy disks was not ideal. But it was enjoyable to send them to Walmart and have them printed. Having a printer like that would've been convenient, but I think I'd rather just occasionally send them out to be printed. The few that I did get printed would've been cheaper in the long run.

My parents house happen to have a sealed Epson PictureMate in their garage which I stumbled across the other day, I must see if it works after watching this video! Similar idea by the looks except it uses ink and reads from slightly more modern formats such as USB and memory cards! (still though it looks like the release date was 2004 or so which is scarily almost 20 years ago already)

The boss of the place where I worked back then (R. I. P. R. H) loved the Mavica cameras, because he could just store the floppy discs and buy new ones withou needing to save the images on a hard drive. When he later upgraded to a camera with a memory card, he continued on to buying a new memory card after every vacation trip and stored the old one. Bless his heart: )

I never had this printer but an Epson Picturemate 4x6 printer with Compact Flash card slot for prints from my Nikon Coolpix 800. It made decent prints and I seem to recell it being around 100. Also had an LCD screen. Sony's like, nah, you can hook up a TV! It's too bad the Mavica printer didn't have at least a Memory Stick slot. maybe later versions did?

wow now I remember when I saw a digital camera for the first time, my college buddy brought one to take pictures. That camera was big and bulky, and used floppy discs. Only now I recognized it in this video. Yeah, it was one of the early Sony Mavica.
I got my Kodak digital camera later, when the 5mpx (yes, whole 5 megapixels) technology was introduced

I got to use a Sony Floppy camera in 2000 while in 8th grade to build the school's website. The computer teacher got me in an independent study class for the website and later hooked me up with the summer tech maintenance guys for my first real job. I recently got most of my old ZIP disks copied off with the photos I took, and they were not good, haha.

This is just crazy how prices have dropped on most printers. I mea you can get a B&W laser these days for 5-10% of what they used to cost back then almost 24-25 years ago. Then again, lasers were more of a premium technology back then -- nowadays laser B&W and and color inkjet printers are mainstay staple items of most homes.

We had these in school so you could print your paper without taking up a computer for someoen who needed it to work. I was in college in 1999. I remember using it to print photos. You could print from a camera too, either with the card if the printer had a card reader (CVS printer lab had them) or a USB-a squarish cable.

Awesome Clint! I realised something awesome you could try with this; printed CD inlays.
Not sure if the prints are quite big enough for that purpose, but I spotted the idea right there on the desk at the end!
So pleasantly surprised with the print quality from this era, but then again, it is a SONY. thanks!

I have the Kodak version of this kind of printer. It has a dock on top for my Kodak digital camera to sit on, and I would use the camera screen to select and print. It used the same type of print tech and makes excellent pictures. It does borderless prints. I have a 4 megapixel camera for it with 10 optical zoom.

I have a number of Mavica's, but I wasn't even aware of there being a Sony printer for it. I used a similar dye sublimation Canon instead. No floppy drive on that one though. Drivers only for Windows 98, which makes the Sony model a lot better, as it does not depend on obsolete software. Neat device!

As always. Us being men of similar age and homeschooled in the US, I always feel that nostalgia of a time I ve known, but my family never was in a place to get this stuff. You get it and I support you. Thank you, Clint. I genuinely love the heck out of you and you make my day always. Keep it up!
