The trouble with mainstream audiences is they're mostly very dumbed down, comprised of alot of young people with very short attention spans and simply cannot sit still long enough, or be able to appreciate a fine work of art such as Blade Runner 2049. And now i bet i sound like some snobby intellectual haha.
Im simply a sci fi nerd tbh, i love a good sci fi film and have wanted a sequel to Blade Runner forever since it's rather haunting ending, but i only wanted one if it was done well, and not a rehash of what came before but built on the original and 2049 did just that. Its a truly great sequel.
I agree on one thing though the promotional marketing was weak for this film.

Why did it flop? Two words: Hans Zimmer, the alleged musician who has been responsible for the sewage and sludge that was once dominated by musical geniuses such as Bernard Herrmann, Jerry Goldsmith, John Williams, Elmer Bernstein and so-on. He has ripped off so many gifted composers and turned it into garbage by using percussion synth. and turning the bass up to 11, causing irreparable high frequency hearing loss and nearly exploding visceral organs. The iconic and brilliant score by Vangelis was followed by some mediocre, arrogant 4th rate hack with no formal musical training and maybe a Casio keyboard that he toys with from time to time. Zimmer is a malignant cancer all over the film music industry, who has metastasized over the past 20 years. He has bamboozled a generation of film goers who think this stuff is good. He must be stopped.

Nah, nothing is wrong with this film, except the occasional restating of something that was said earlier to highlight it: because youve never seen a miracle. The filmography was astounding, and score was mesmerizing. The contrast of gaping wides with melancholy backdrops and cyberpunk themed music made for an exhilarating atmosphere. The plot was an entity connected to, but not based on the original. This was an ode not only to the original novel Do Androids Dream of Electric sheep, the first Blade Runner movie, but to film itself. This was an underrated masterpiece by the general audiences, but true critics could not overlook the grandeur of this film. This is the type of movie we deserve as moviegoers, and it is the type of movie that will inspire countless to pick up a camera and begin to record.

Too many complain that in Hollywood it's all about the money or profit is all that matter to the studios. Well, d'uh! The studios pay for the movie's production in the first place! Without them there wouldn't be a movie at all. People invested their hard swindled cash to make the film. It shouldn't come as a surprise that Hollywood types expect an unreasonable percentage in profit. So of course a film is measured on how much money it takes in. But it was a critical success, which is more than most films get these days. Stop complaining about the money grabbers. They sometimes make a mistake and actually finance a really good or maybe GREAT movie now and then. Let us be thankful that the greedy bastards paid for one of the best SF movies ever made.

I don't know what to say. This movie is very good that it sucks! Everything is bad except that this failed director failed in everything and only relied on the actors like Ryan goseling and Harrison Ford and that's a shame for a legendary movie stars to act in such a horrible slow terrible movie Ryan goseling acted in drive a movie that I see is thousand times better than garbage runner 2017

real human + really good replicant makes an unperfect baby who got immune deficiency problem living in a gastly dome for enternity. i didnt see any windows
story is too jumpy. how did the main actor know all of sudden the ill woman was a deckard's daughter in the upgrade center?
how come all the bad guys know the upgrade center but they didnt know the ill woman was the deckard daughter.
who implanted the wooden horse memory into the main actor guy?
no woders all replicants with normal human senses were paranoidal and rebellious, wouldnt you if someone would cut through your bellies and spill your guts to retire you. be more logical, movie. no authorities are this dumb.

The biggest annoyance to me after waiting decades for it. the soundtrack!
It was the most brutally annoying loud pointless sound track of any movie i ever watched.
It was so loud, it deafened out the voice of the actors in some scenes, it had nothing to do with the scene, just loud banging or screeching noises done on some piss ant electronic synthesiser.
When Vangelis did the original soundtrack to original bladerunner it had warmth and character and gave the movie a distinctive recognisable atmosphere. Whoever did the soundtrack to this version went completely over the top and destroyed it!

I do not think a rating which allowed yonger viewers in the theaters would do much good. You really need to dig in to the story to understand it. As a young man I watched the first movie in the theaters, but did not think much of it. I then watched it 20 years later, only to find out that I had totally missed the points the first time around. At that time i think I basicly saw it as an action movie, but it is so much more than that. This is also whyu I do not think it would not have helped much to rate it different. You need to be a little seasoned to understand the underlayers that are not so visible

This was a gorgeous movie. Roger Deakins was rightfully celebrated with awards and praise for his work on this masterpiece sequel. Sometimes, things happen and works of great art escape the studio. Financial flop? Whom ever took it on the chin, I thank you for your sacrifice. Side note, WETA did amazing work on the miniature sets. The look was spectacular. It was better than strait up CGI. I hope more films invest in this type of SFX, the look may cost more but it holds up so well. The production of this movie in a nutshell: Love conquered greed.

I think there are a lot of young people now who don't care about the Blade Runner franchise or know about it or have patience for it. 2017 might be just a little too late of a release. Others simply download things, so the people spending money on films are of a certain age group while people like myself are jaded about re-makes and current era late sequels. I only watched 2049 finally on Netflix to discover its actually objectively superior to the 1982 film! Which is amazing to achieve that these days for a sequel! Thats so rare!
