The Real Reason Solo Did Terrible At The Box Office
video description
#2 Far too many people had decided not to see it before it came out for any character portrayals to have been a factor.
#3 This one may have been a small factor. Small.
#4 LOL, no. This was not a factor.
#5 Again, LOL, no. Now you're just reaching.
#6 It failed internationally for the same reason it failed domestically.
Now let's look at the REAL reasons Solo failed. The Last Jedi was terrible. It was full of plot holes and poorly written character. It wasn't even just bad for a Star Wars movie like Phantom Menace was. It was just a bad movie by all objective and most subjective measures. Literally the only reason it didn't flop is because most Star Wars fans avoided hearing anything at all about it like the plague till after they'd seen it. As the next movie in the franchise, Solo always was going to have a tough time after that steaming pile of crap.
That was bad enough, but rather than admit they'd made a bad movie and learn from their mistakes Lucasfilm started ATTACKING THEIR OWN FANS! Seriously. How can you expect to have fans when you start calling them names for not liking something you've done? Especially when those names are as nasty as the ones that Star Wars fans have been called by the likes of Kathleen Kennedy and Rian Johnson? Can you think of any faster way to drive off your fan base? Because I can't.
And there, right there, is the real reason Solo failed. Lucasfilm actively drove off one of the oldest, largest, and most rabid fandoms in the world by proving they can make truly craptastic movies and then attacking their own fans instead of learning from their mistakes.

I liked and enjoyed Solo: A Star Wars Story. And I recommend everyone to either go see it, or buy the DVD. I will never listen to a main stream critic again. Because of them I miss out on seeing a great and entertaining Star Wars movie. They talked so negative about the movie that I believed that the movie was not a good movie. After seeing it on Netflix, I greatly enjoyed the movie and I would have enjoyed it more on the big screen. I see that I can not trust film critic anymore, because I see that they are either more political, or they did not get enough money to speak good about this film. They need to learn to not to destroy things, and people careers, because they just don't remember to how to have fun and tell the truth about a movie that has real entertainment value for everyone and their fans. To make a long story short, They love telling a lie for money, than they do enjoy telling the truth.

These this is what you already know about the characters, and we have to film exactly as you know them else you're going to complain about plot holes are not very interesting. The 12 parsec crap, yes he's a pirate, O he's going to tatooine somesay ( what's a tatooine? , why bother? Big fans already know all this stuff and for non fans it's just backstory fluff. There is no story.
Okay, there is no story in Marvel movies and those are box office hits.
I guess for some Solo has to much story.
Kill 50% of your beloved characters and your audience will call it emotional.
Don't tell any bad news about your real family, or real life people you may care about.
Don't include anything slightly religious or political like poverty, slavery, senates or gun sellers.
Just create a 120 minute explosion and you'll do fine at the box office.

I didn't watch solo in the cinema because the last Jedi put me off Star Wars. But after watching solo, I think I'm back into the franchise. It was a good film, and it deserved to do better.
The worst part is that Disney is now cancelling or at least delaying any further spin off films, namely kenobi. Kenobi has potential to be incredibly good, but we may never see it because the bar was set too high. It could've had the best characters in Ewan as obi wan, the best action with the light sabre fights and the best story, showcasing life after order 66.
The fans expect the world, and when Disney gave everything they could, it wasn't enough. We can only wait and see what comes next. If the next film also bombs at the box office, it's not likely we'll every see many other Star Wars films.

Is it possible, just vaguely possible, just remotely possible that Solo simply wasn't a very good movie? Could it be simply just a matter that it is a mediocre film?
All these factors (franchise fatigue, fan backlash against The Last Jedi, etc) seem like total garbage. If the film had been great, it would have EASILY overcome any of these issues.
Mediocre script, mediocre character development, no real depth. that's why Solo failed.
The force was simply not strong with this film. Period. End of story. So simple. If Disney or the filmmakers are wise, they will face this simple truth and try to make a good movie next time. They will stop kidding themselves and not keep trying to make excuses for making a mediocre movie at best.
Do or do not, there is no try.

Absolutely no fatigue at all. I would pay to watch a new (proper) Star Wars movie every week if such a thing was possible. Solo was simply a very bad movie. If you combine that with the fact that The Last Jedi was an utter disgrace which in turn very rightfully created the boycott movement there's your 2 main reasons for the flop. Solo had no soul and, like Rogue One, was very claustrophobic photography wise. The acting felt forced and the story was beyond weak and almost felt like it didn't belong to the Star Wars universe. A bunch of scenes with lots of eye candy forcefully stitched together and very bad acting. That's what it felt like. Don't even get me started about how Han met Chewie and droid rights. I sincerely hope Episode 9 will fail even harder.

Im sick of idiots like you attributing this bomb to Star Wars fatigue. There was no Star Wars fatigue. Thats simply a puff phrase Disney wanted its controlled movie critics to put out there. It failed miserably at the box office, 1) The Last Jedi absolutely sucked, and didnt get fans excited about Star Wars like they were after The Force Awakens, and therefore, large swaths of fans just werent interested 2) this movie was bland at best, and bland movies bring in bland box office results and 3) of all the characters to do a back story on, Solo was probably the worst one. His back story is boring. How could people at Disney not have known that? If you did a stand alone movie about Obi-Wan Kenobi, fans would have come out in droves to see it.

Wrong actor: Anthony Ingruber has the best impression of Harrison Ford in the world, played a young Ford in a movie, was skipped for the part. He even looks like him.
Bad actor: needed an acting coach to come in for the actor because he was just straight up bad at delivering his lines.
Wrong character: his performance notwithstanding, the writing of his character was not consistent with that of Han Solo, which is KEY in a spinoff movie focusing on one character.
TLJ: lots of hate for the Last Jedi is shown in both intentional boycotting and in a lack of interest by old fans.
Im sure theres more but these are the biggest reasons why old, new, casual, and hardcore fans didnt return for Solo.

One of the biggest issues with Solo is its pointlessness.
Some blockbusters can be really good when no one asked for them like Oceans 8 or this years Star is Born.
Solo had no reason to exist because Han Solos backstory has no tie-in to the original trilogys storyline. But the concept is salvageable if the execution is good.
However, the direction by Ron Howard and the studio treats this story as important. The movie is serious in tone and generally dark (story wise and lighting wise) for a story no one cares.
Had they go a full-on comedic route with Lord and Miller, it would have been seen as memorable because less attention is on its pointless idea

Now for the good news: the Star Wars franchise only makes a fraction of its revenues from box office receipts. Most of its money, especially under the trademark protection of the Disney umbrella, comes from merchandise. Billions of dollars will pour in from Solo and generic Star Wars goods, whatever losses that may incur from lackluster theater profits. Think of the movie as just a two-hour advertisement for the merchandise. This has been Disney's basic model for decades. Some of their animated movies have actually LOST money and then gained it back exponentially over time with Action figures, board games, t-shirts, coloring books, lunch buckets, video games.
