It Doesn't Take A Genius To Know Why Holmes And Watson Bombed JustSomeGuy: The reason this failed is that it goes against what we know about an established character in popular culture. Sherlock Holmes is an intelligent deductive reasoning genius, the greatest detective in the world and Dr. John Watson a capable doctor. We have a recent set of movies (Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law) as well as the widely popular series (Benedict Cumberbatch and Bilbo Baggins) that show an intelligent, hyper observant, slightly sociopathic, genius and his medical doctor sidekick. Both productions have elements of comedy but are at the core about a great detective solving mysteries. What I saw in the trailer was bumbling buffoons and slapstick comedy that looked they couldn't deduce how to operate a pencil and notepad. Imagine making a legitimate 007 movie with James Bond as a lead character and having him be a stuttering idiot who trips over his own shoelaces. Yes, there are slapstick spy comedies, but they are not James Bond's 007. Honestly, if this was pitched as a movie like Almost Heroes (which is a great comedy) where the characters were trying to compete with Holmes and Watson but kept getting into silly antics and beaten to the punch, it probably would have done much better. Personally, the idea of the buffoonish Holmes and Watson just did not appeal to me.

So I actually saw it, but I only made it less than an hour into the movie. Definitely the worst movie Ive ever seen, not a single funny moment unless you are mentally handicapped or a toddler that hasnt fully developed yet. All the jokes were over the top and almost 100% slapstick and every single joke fell way short. I couldnt even crack a smirk or even blow the slightest bit of air out of my nose during a single joke. The plot was all over the place, it had way to much exposition about Sherlocks origin and none about the rest of the characters involved with the duo in the main act of the movie. Ive never rolled my eyes at a movie before, and I did it several times on some terrible jokes. Dont go see this horrible movie, stay home and watch step brothers and youll laugh more in the first minute, then the whole movie of Holmes and Watson.

The first mistake I think was casting either actor for a show that would NEVER make good comedy. Anyone who grew up enjoying the genre of anything Sherlock, would probably agree that these two actors are NOT holmes or watson material. But then I never was a big fan of either actor or any of their previous work. Contrary to a previous posting this ain't no shit Sherlock is actually All Shit Sherlock. But then so are most of the new remakes that Hollywood thinks we want. NO creativity anymore, just terrible remakes trying to ride the coattails of prior winners. I suppose Hollywood has no more original thinkers left, only newbies wanting to break into the industry but without any originality. Kinda of like buying shit from China, its might look good upfront, but the actual quality is just a crap copy of the original.

Believe me. it's baaaaaad. went to the movies, was sitting there watching the crappy film and ppl were getting up and walking out. sad Really because these 2 usually do great comedy but this pile of Victorian horseshit was beyond a polished Tured. why oh why did they try to make Holmes and Watson Funny. i think there was a film made once before back in the late 80's. without a Clue and that was shit. this is worse than that 80's film. it was like. I was waiting for a cure for the Gay black Death but it never happened. Lack luster comedy. lame acting, boring dialogue, if this is the future of comedy in hollywood we may as well watch paint dry.

I personally thought this movie was funny, as its not supposed to be a traditional Holmes and Watson film, but more of a parody. I believe one of the reasons its not doing well & why people are leaving halfway through is because it took a few jokes to a political & social level. I dont believe they went too far in their jokes, but these days tensions are high & people get triggered easily. Overall I thought it was a good, funny movie that made me laugh several times & if you understand its supposed to be more of a parody film then I think you will enjoy it as well.

So many people seem to be dumbfounded (pun intended) as to why this movie failed. Gee. could it be because the two no talent, no class lead actors were put into something way out of their league? Just the thought of these two doing this movie, is blasphemy and a BAD IDEA from the word go. The last time someone had an idea this bad, was when Coke introduced New Coke back in the 80s. I would rather skydive naked, without a parachute, into a pit of radioactive broken glass than watch this obvious travesty of a movie.

I actually saw it, and it was not that bad. If you enjoy dumb comedies like Happy Gilmore, Tommy Boy, or Night at the Roxbury, then this is par for the course. It's not a sophisticated comedy, and it was never pretending to be. The biggest problem I have with the movie is they underutilized Ralph Fiennes. They also didn't do very well with Lauren Lapkus and Kelly Macdonald's characters when they had such major points to the plots.

I feel like Will Farrell only knows one type of comedy, the self deprecating one. One where the lead(s) are the only one(s) in the entire cast that doesn't know that they are the joke. It may work as a good short skit, but it gets tiring real fast. This movie may have worked better if it followed the Scary Movie franchise way of comedy, by adding tons of references to other shows/ movies and if the entire cast were hilarious.

I have watched this movie 3 times. It is one of the funniest movies I've seen. I don't understand the bad reviews. It's brilliant. Clearly, they do not understand the comedic tone of the film. That is what is so hilarious. The deliberate over the top acting, and seemingly incongruous jokes, mixed with jabs at the modern world. It's genius. A shame so many don't see it.

Yes it wasn't the best film. It was just a comedy. It had quite a few laughable moments, and I enjoyed seeing it with friends when there was nothing else going on. Mission accomplished. As in any Will Ferrel film, don't take it serious, it is meant to be some dumb comedy. People laugh at dumb shit all the time, that's half (if not more) of YouTube.
