Donnie Darko's Ending Explained Dialogue: What a beautiful movie. This is an excellent explanation. I would like to add that it was not God as an entity who orchestrated all these events, but more the suchness of the universe itself. This makes sense from a mystical/pantheistic view; all the Universe, acting as One entity, collectively arranges for the Universe to save Itself. This is why everything works so smoothly, and end up teaching Donnie all about what life is about: love and sacrifice. You could say that at first, in the movie he came off as a nihilist. Towards the end, he understands he is a cog in the Universe, but not in the nihilistic way; but in a beautiful way, realising he has to fulfill the most important thing in the world, as everyone else in the movie do, too. He is exhilarated to realise his immense importance in the Universe. He is transformed from the beginning to the end of the film. That's why he's so happy before his death, because he has realised the plan of the Universe, acting as itself as him. Every single person in the movie, from the Manipulated Dead to the Manipulated living had The most important job in the Universe to do, because if they didn't do their part, Donnie couldn't do his part, and all existence would end. It is not only Donnie who sacarifised himself, but Frank did too, in order to become part of the Manipulated Dead and be able to influence Donnie to do everything.

This explanation is far too complicated.
Bottom line, when he left his bedroom, that sent everything into a downward spiral of events that never should have even happened.
It's just like when you see a movie and someone goes back in time, and they're told that if they step on 1 bug and kill it, that will change everything that's supposed to happen, because 1 thing effects the other, then another, then another etc etc etc.
So since the series of events changed because he was drawn away from the bedroom and shouldn't have been, his mother and sister ended up being on that airplane.
Now that he stayed in the bedroom like he was supposed to, the girlfriend never gets ran over, the guy that ran her over never gets shot by Donnie, the mother and sister never get on that plane etc etc etc.

Richard Kelly was sort of ahead of his time. He basically didn't want his movies to be stand alone, they were something you had to experience with other media. You could read more of The Philosophy of Time Travel online than is featured in the directors cut. Not sure if the website still exists or not. But reading what was put online and watching the theatrical version is the way to do it. The directors cut is kinda lame.
Similarly Southland Tales was reviled because the movie is parts 4, 5 and 6 of a story where parts 1, 2 and 3 are the graphic novel. You have to read the graphic novel before the movie will make any sense and when you do it is actually pretty interesting, though still has a lot of very poorly done elements to it.

so if Donnie in tangent universe is the one who's responsible to break away the engine thus sending it in real universe. why didn't the Frank saved him again in the real universe, cuz the first time that happens it is clear that somewhere in a parallel universe donnie did it so what breaks the loop. what is up with the reverse countdown, how does he know bout the exact time.
i think donnie deliberately ignores frank calls in the end thus breaking the loop. i think the glitch creating the tangent universe or the artifact required for its fall wasn't the jet engine, it was Donnie himself. who was originally meant to die that day but manages to escape his death thus messing with the space time continuum!

I always thought Donnie had to follow the exact steps he did to close the loop of the tangent universe and when he didnt the tangent universe would restart again. I think its important to note we see Donnie in the very beginning, on the mountain. I think by the end with him watching the engine on the mountain we can assume the beginning of the film was him waking up in the tangent universe after a failed attempt. I see ppl debating here about which engine and timeline its from and I believe its the tangent engine crashing into Donnies room in the tangent universe and when its sent back to the primary thats the first time it ever happened. He finally got everything right hence the relief at the end.

maybe i wrong. Donnie was supposedly die by the Engine fall. but due the dimension crack its create a wormhole.
Prime World: engine 1 missing in time. Primer onhold. create Tangen World (Second) to fix timeline.
Tangen World: moving on after engine fall but with defect timeline. and reversed (create second Tangen World.
(second T. world): remake again the even with memory previous second world (FRANK. engine 2 get detached and forcefulll
send to primer.
and butterfly effect restore back those timeline. caused DEJA VU. Gretchen and Rose exchange wave hand.

What's up with the doctor tho? Why did his therapist know so much towards the end about the real weight of Donnie's state? How can she know. ALSO Can someonemeone please talk to me about how he wakes up where the film ends with a menacingly accomplished grin AND NO ONE TALKS ABOUT IT. DONNIE could have survived after all and fixed the loop, now able to reawake there at the curvy road on his bike, now with the knowledge of his role and able to prevent everything and exist in a split version of himself in the PU. I'm very sleep deprived humor me plz lulll

In the movie there's a scene between Donnie's parents where his dad mentions Frankie Feedler. His dad said that Frankie said he was doomed. I suspect Frankie had a similar experience as Donnie. He was the living receiver in a tangent universe that formed back then and saved the primary universe by dying. And Donnie's dad was a manipulated living in Frankie's tangent universe. And what's happening with donnie is maybe why he vaguely is remembering Frankie in that scene. Because it's something similar. But that's just my take on it.

Sometimes people make a movie that has a deeper meaning like Shutter Island, Vertigo, Enemy etc, and it becomes a masterpiece. Sometimes they try but don't succeed, like in this case. Simply it's not good enough. And then when it didn't work, some blind fans just say: 'it's to deep for us to understand it, but it's great. ' Yeah. Let's just record 2 hours of running water and just bla bla about the meaning of it. In this film, Jake deserves Oscar for his performance but overall this movie is overrated as f.

Last night a plane crashed into a house killing the people inside! There has been a lot of speculation that this movie was premonitions of the future to come in reality! I've seen references in some videos on YouTube about the end of the world and Hollywood putting little hints in their movies of what's to come and Donnie Darko has been referenced in some of these. Now with this plane crashing into a home last night they saved the plane came straight down like a rock
