Bizarre Things About The Hulk And Black Widow's Relationship Juan: I think whoever wrote this has a really fundamental misunderstanding of both these characters and their arcs, or is looking at it on a purely superficial level. Banner and Romanoff make much more sense together than their superficial differences would make it appear. They both have the exact same sort of shared trauma (being turned into something they don't want to be, creatures of destruction, against both of their respective wills, and they both feel like outsiders.
And besides, Natasha isn't just a spy type. She's trying to do good. She's trying to do and be better. Age of Ultron was about both of them figuring out their place in the world. (Because of the fall of SHIELD for Natasha, and because of his newfound public trust and companionship via the Avengers for Bruce. At first they both thought that they had no place, they could run away, but Natasha was the first to realize that she (and Banner) didn't have to run away. Because they're not just killers, they're heroes. Their place is with the Avengers. So Natasha sacrifices her relationship with Banner for the greater good (by bringing out the Hulk) Infinity War was where Banner realized that he could be a hero too. And not just through Hulk, but he himself. Hulk didn't come out because he was sick of being a tool for Banner to use. He forced Banner to do it himself. Endgame is undoubtedly where Hulk and Banner will solve their relationship somehow.
Their pairing makes perfect sense. I don't even understand why people say they seem like opposites. Banner and Romanoff are very similar. They're both snarky and intelligent. Bruce isn't even really all that reserved, by nature. He's mostly quiet because he's incredibly careful about bringing attention to himself. Being on the run does that. Neither of them often get too close to other people, for obvious reasons, but I think it makes sense they would choose to get close to each other.
I honestly think the biggest issue people have with the ship is that it messed with their standard expectations for cinematic couplings. People expected Romanoff to be with Clint or Steve. Spy + Spy, or Spy + Soldier seemingly makes sense, or more sense than Spy + Scientist, but what seems like a good idea isn't necessarily a good idea. Because Natasha isn't just a spy. Steve isn't just a Solider. Bruce isn't just a Scientist.
I understand why people might prefer her with one of the other two, since it's in the source material, but the MCU isn't supposed to be a carbon-copy and never was. In the MCU Clint has a family, and Steve is a completely different person to Romanoff. He disagrees with her methods, but is capable of friendship with her. A relationship wouldn't work. Plus, their character arcs don't quite go hand in hand. Natasha wants to stop fighting, eventually. Steve can't live without a war, without being a hero.
Also, the point of Banner being a liability on the run directly contrasts the point you made earlier about him outsmarting Romanoff to get her true intentions in the Shack. Plus, the guy clearly knows how to hide. He's escaped the US Military for years by the time the Avengers rolls around. SHIELD knew where he was, yeah, but that's because they're SHIELD. (Also, Banner has 7 phD's. He's not an idiot)
Anyways, that's my two cents.

I understand completely that Age of Ultron was flawed. Yes but I like the pairing of Widow and Hulk. It's ironic to ad nauseam how often people take a strong female character and negate all the things we see them accomplish in the light of a few honest moments where a female acts in any way feminine. Then critics want to say that this is another damsel in distress scenario? Yeah 'cause you just created it. It is as if the only way a female can be seen as heroic is if she is made to do say and act like whatever outdated idea of manliness is the status quo at the time. Or that is she isn't seen doing it all while having it all then she is falling short. All of those tired tropes are suicidal to the cause of equality. It is actually possible to depict people as people and just people. Plus I don't understand how in any way shape or form Black Widow can even be seen as a d in d in the film. 'Cause Ultron captured her? So what makes you think that she didn't just go along with it and let him take her? the first thing she does is start sending a morse code with long and lats! remember they didn't know he went back to Sokovia. Widow in fact uses the tired cliche of d in d to create false sense of power in enemies. This is the third time in 2 movies we clearly see this. If Widow was someone needing saving she wouldn't have essentially saved herself. I think that in the whole sum of things Widow is the only one who actually shows herself to be a stronger better person than what we saw in the first Avengers movie. The whole red room story from flashback to revealing that they destroyed her insides to better control her was insane. One brave new character development. By the way, She is the only one walking up to Hulk without even wearing a giant suit of armor.

I do have a solution which will make the Bruce Banner/Natasha couple seem a whole lot more believable. Remember Natasha came onto Bruce Banner. The thing is, it is an ACT! Natasha Romanoff is a professional field agent. Ever seen J-Law's Red Sparrow or Keri Russell's The Americans? One of their fields of expertise is to seduce their target. They can manipulate their prey to do whatever they want. They're experts in brainwashing and psychology. For Natasha, Bruce is her mission.
The Hulk is a weapon of mass destruction. His strength is comparable to Thor. He killed a hell of a lot more Chitauri aliens in the battle of New York city than any other Avenger. He also smashed a lot more Ultron robots than the others too. All Black Widow has to do is aim him in the right direction. That way Shield has a very powerful weapon at its disposal. Natasha can aim him and she's also figured out how to turn the Hulk back into Bruce Banner.
I don't know if it was Natasha's or Nick Fury's decision to get Natasha and Bruce together but you got to admit, if the relationship is just a sham and Natasha's mission, then it's still a really good idea, if a bit cruel for Bruce.

Although, I would've preferred it to be Betty Ross like in the comics. Bruce and Natashe make sense (even though it felt forced. Widow is surrounded by capable spy guys (Clint, Cap, Falcon, Bucky) who are much like herself. Bruce knows nothing about being a spy (despite being good and moving around alot) or on the frontlines. and he's a nerd, unlike the rest, if it wasn't for the whole Hulk angle, he would be just a regular guy; which I think she wants to be, just a regular, normal woman. She doesn't want to be Widow all day/24-7, if she were with one of the others I mentioned, she wouldn't be able to separate the work-spy life. Because that's the main-thing they would have in common. with Bruce, she could just be Natasha. but the MCU in general just said F everyone's relationship. Thor and Foster, done, Cap and Sharon Carter, done, Bruce and Betty Ross and/or Widow, done. yeah, so their track-record with relationships are trash anyway. only one they got right and worked on is Vision and Wanda. because Stark and Pepper were never really together in the comics anyway.

The real problem of this relationship is they played the role they are not supposed to play. Black Widow basically steals Betty Ross's role. In Incredible Hulk, Betty Ross is the only woman can comfort Hulk. Then In Age of Ultron, Black Widow suddenly becomes that.
For Hulk, I don't understand when he becomes a man can be with traumatic people. He spent his whole life running so suddenly He is comfortable of an assassin with Dark history?
Besides that, being with Black Widow, just killed the opportunity Banner revists Betty. If He doesn't go to find Betty, It means Hulk truly gets away all his old ties including all his villains gallery. In Endgame, We witnessed how wasted Hulk is. Hulk must go independent. Otherwise this character is done.

I figured the real reason that Hulk wouldn't help, is because Dr. Strange must of told him not to. It makes sense to me. Dr. Strange saw millions of outcomes and went back thru time at 1 point to tell Hulk what was going to happen and to not interfere. The Hulk wouldn't of just punked out like that against anybody, even Thanos. The Hulk not trying harder during that fight was planned, and it set the tone of the movie right from the beginning. (That Thanos wasnt someone to mess with)
It also seemed random that Loki saved the Hulk.
Dr. Strange must have gotten to him too.

I think it all makes since. hear me out. Black Widow I'd drawn to the strongest avenger. the only man who has ever scared her like that. in the movie Black Widow I think it will show how she always has the upper hand on men. duh. she is a black widow after all. and she's great at hiding in plain sight so it would be perfect for them to hide together. she would know the best way to hide hulk. and help them run on a dime if needed. the hulk and banners relationship will get better and black widow will fall in love with both of them. maybe that last part is a stretch tho. lol

I think you're onto something. Hulk probably has feelings for Natasha the same as Bruce but knows she only cares for Bruce and not Hulk. So when she calls on Hulk for battle as grateful as he is that he's useful to her, he knows she only cares about Bruce and he's kinda tired of just being Bruce's attack dog and Natasha and everyone else using him so he left. That's kinda deep. Endgame hopefully culminates in Bruce and Hulk realizing that Hulk is all Bruce's anger and Bruce is Hulk's compassion and the two are required for them to become one perfect transformation.

Why the hell did they even create this relationship? Wonder who came up with this idea, if Ed Norton was still playin' the character would you even make this happen? What happened to his real missus? If you gave that a trilogy too and continued their relationship would you still chuck that away and turn him over to Black Widow? Don't make sense at all and huge confusion to the head, I think someone need a serious kick in the throat.

I totally bought their relationship. Banner is smart, unassuming, thoughtful and kind. All the other men around Natasha have some sort of ego she would have to compete with. With each other they could just be Natasha and Bruce. At least for a little while. That was the hope Fury had for them I think. That they, together, could have something beyond the assasin and the hulk. It didnt work out and they wont go back to it now.
