Fat Thor Reportedly Caused Major Controversy On Endgame Set

Maybe it was poorly communicated by the filmmakers, or maybe the writers were at fault for wrongly labeling it thor's supposedly 'disgusting' new physicality. Whatever the case, it was a matter of miscommunication to the offended crew/audiences that perhaps lead to this misunderstanding. But I think narratively it had a purpose of showing causality in the most empthatic and realistic way possible. Not a way to present funny disgusting thor haha everybody laugh but human-like full of feelings thor that everyone can/should instead relate to. As if to say: Sometimes, Not even Gods are perfect, and they don't have to be.

I'd like to put a different point of view on Thor in Endgame. A lot of people have been upset over Thor's issues, and how he has dealt with his perceived failure, being played for comedy. people have sited that he is suffering from PTSD, depression, loss, anger, fear, failure, loss of purpose. myself and pretty much every veteran of war deal with these same issues and more.
We drink, we get fat, we withdraw and, the point of this, we deal with a lot of it with humor and comedy, sometimes very dark.
I like that it was a dark funny moment that you can see change when a name is mentioned, Thor immediately changes, the anger, and fear and failure all show on his face that was a smile moments before (forced or fake as it might have been. I think the Thor character is done very well, how he has chosen to deal with everything is done perfectly and honestly shows a very good representation of a veteran of war and how they deal with life after combat.
Hell I'm just glad I have a version of Thor I can relate too.
I'm nothing special but I watched the film the first time and what he was experiencing hit me hard and direct. I felt it, one of the many times I shed a tear during this film, but I felt it. it resonated deep with me.
I have to say something because so many people were looking at his role and how he was portrayed as a negative when all I saw was relatability and truth.

Thor dealt with his mental breakdown in a very human way. The laughter and jokes was almost his way of hiding his pain. For me when he turned serious with Hulk and said we. we don't say that name here and when he spoke with Frigga you could see how this was serious for his character development. I've dealt with my issues by drinking them away and it's not easy to get out of that. I think more people find it relatable. Yeah being fat is something you can sort yourself and I think Thor will get his act together, however a lot of the comtroversy is more a reason for people to be abusive to fat people. Or fangirls crying cause he's unattractive welcome to the fickle side of the marvel fanbase.

Pathetic: take the strongest of male figures, make them fat, dumb as can be, weaken & disable them. why in hell would that be any more appealing than a fat, drunken lady marvel or a weak, crippled scarlet widow or a washed up weepy wonder woman? It's OK for men to both feel & be strong at the same time. It's OK for women to be feminine and also be heroes. It's OK to have white males be positive, powerful role models and keep their crown & shield. It's OK for women & people of color to have their own positive traditions and culture without having to substitute them for white male heroic kings & captains. Next up: a pure white, norwegian queen of Wakanda. try that ridiculousness on. Yeeshh!

It's one thing to get mad, cause Thor got fat. This one is ridiculous, of course. After all, why shouldn't guys like me have a superhero to relate to. :)

So, considering this, people are/should be mad at the person who said it, not the idea of a fat Thor by itself.

And neither did to seem to fit in with Thor's character very much (even though I would say Thor more then any other mcu character goes through random changes to his personality.
And then there is my personal taste. I want Thor to act human, but not necessarily like an earthling. He does NOT need to play fortnight to be relatable.

I thought that Fat Thor was true to life reaction to a monumental tragedy. Watching half the universe die is pretty darn traumatic, and he failed to stop it by just a hair. If he had gone for Thanos' head all this wouldn't have happened. That would mess with anyone's mind, and different people respond to failure in different ways. Lots of people really would crawl into a bottle or otherwise retreat from reality. When he caught Mjolnir and exclaimed I'm still worthy, he was happily surprised.

At 3 billion box office, assuming that a movie ticket is 10, that makes for 300 million viewers. If you add 200 million more to compensate for the people that watched a pirated version or for the lower ticket prices in 3rd world countries and all, you get 500 million viewers. According to this video, there are 500 million 6 people in the world. Maybe you should try not to call every popcorn flick a cultural fenomenon because 7% of the world population watched it? :D

I didnt think it was fat shaming at all. Just a very logical look at depression. Though he's a very light hearted hero, he has gone through some horrible things in a short amount of time. It only makes sense that the guy who thinks he's unbeatable would spiral out of control after that kind of beating. Adding onto that his own coming to terms with the trauma and what you have is a really great heartfelt story.
