The night king is the good guy. He was supposed to stop the 3 eyed raven once he escapes captivity form that magical tree (which he did once he took over Bran. The night king failed his mission, he was smiling because he thought he will finally save the world from the evil 3 eyed raven. This theory will be revealed in the prequels.
3 Eyed Raven is the Villain: I am not Bran, why do you think I came all this way, you were exactly where you were supposed to be (to john, he was in the magic tree for 1000 years and now he rules the 7 kingdoms for 1000s of years.

These fan theories need to stop. There was nothing. So special story. No hidden story. No special meaning. The night king was nothing more then Bender walking around Kill All Humans. Like a sparkler. This show started out bright and strong and fizzled out to a charbroiled useless stick that now belongs in the garbage. We all expected a grand finale like a real firework show, but nope. We just got a sparkler.

Maybe it is because of people like you who hyped this season so much that we're so disappointed. It was a bad season but the reason people were more disappointed is because of so many fan theories and thing you missed in this episode things that people got their expectations so high!

My take is Bran looks in the distance and sees Arya approaching and the Night King shows an expression as he both wonders and realizes what Bran is looking at, and then the NK realizes it and is turns around and catches Arya while she yells and lunges.

The reason for the Night King's surprised look at Bran in the 2nd shot is because Bran just looked down exactly at the spot where Arya was going to stab the NK, because Bran knew what would happen.
They don't show that moment in this video.

In my mind the look was, the night king realizing and wondering why Bran wasn't scared, and Bran seeing what the Night King once was, and then finally looking through him watching Arya creeping up haha!

I think sprouting of a grass shown in one of the last scenes was a indicator that long night is over and humans have won over the white walkers. Or may be long winters are over.
