This Severely Underrated Johnny Depp Film Is Owning Netflix David: Michael Mann is a very interesting director (and one of my favourites. His work has always been consistent in its tone and because of that there is a level of appreciation I have for each of his films despite some of them being hit or miss. My biggest gripe with Mann with these more recent films has been how dispassionately they seem to be made, almost like he's reading from his own playbook just trying to recreate past success with projects that honestly seem a bit phoned in. Technically, they're always brilliant as that is clearly what he loves most about making them, deep diving into the in's and out's of whatever crime-filled word his character's live in. From the costumes, equipment, weapon handling, and general realism standpoint, he was on the level of somebody like James Cameron, a near obsessive attention for detail. Unfortunately, where he falters is on making characters feel unique. Everyone is either an utmost professional or a bumbling fool. The protagonists are usually always so capable and often emotionless that it leads me feeling cold about them. What's the difference between Crockett and Tubbs in Miami Vice? There isn't any. One's black, one's white, that's about it. Both are just no-nonsense police officers trying to crack a case and that dynamic works brilliantly during the more technically focused scenes but completely falls apart during any attempt to humanize them or show an emotional side. Unlike many, I actually feel he peaked with Collateral (one of my favourite movies ever) because it was the first time since Heat that I had been so invested in characters he had created. Tom Cruise's Vincent is still his finest work as a filmmaker in forming a fascinating, layered antagonist that acts an incredible foil to Jamie Foxx's Max (his best performance in my eyes. Heat is a gigantic film, teeming with moments of examination, but Collateral is so often unsung in how it manages to truly be his spiritual successor to that masterwork, itself containing as much juicy meat on its bones to pick away at

I saw this. I thought it was good. I would watch it again. I watched in fear because I knew the dirty coppers were going to fill him full of lead at some point. They did plugg him at the end but they didn' t shoot him unrecognizable. Oh JOHNNY, they shot you from behind like the low life cowards they are. They smacked on your girl friend too. Guess what? You did what you want and left a good looken corpse. JOHNNY D. They are gona keep on missen you forever.

Is this what youve come to? Reviewing decade old movies noone cared about at the time? Don't get me wrong this is a phenomenal movie but this is like the 3rd video you've posted about a great movie on Netflix and they're all old and underrated. Why not just d a list instead of individual videos

Sorry. This was not a great movie. Depp's performance wasn't brilliant. Mann's direction seemed like it was in a rush. Bale was underused. The cinematography was all over the place; should've shot on film. Not a good movie. Nothing compared to Heat or Collateral.

My two brothers and I saw Public Enemies in theaters when it came out and we were just kids in high school. It was a fun afternoon matinee. I also saw the real life location where the Dillinger shooting took place with the bullet holes in the windows.

The biograph theatre Dillinger got shot in front of would become the now famous Stepenwolfe theatre with notable alums: Gary Sinise, John Malchovich, Virginia Madsen, and a host of others.

The reason why this is underrated is because there was a lot of movies that came out the same week of that year; I believe it was an animated movie that won the weekend until later.

Public Enemies was a great film. My husband I saw it when it first came out and we were both dumbstruck. Great actors and gorgeous cinematography. The last scene broke my heart.

It was okay. Christian Bale also being in it helps too. About 1/3rd of the way in, the film quality changes to look like a daytime TV soap opera.

I just hate that 'Public Enemies' was shot on digital video; it takes you out of the period feel.
Otherwise, I really enjoyed the flick!
