Gideon Vs Rossi: Who Do Criminal Minds Fans Like More?

Jason Gideon and David Rossi represent two major eras in the history of the popular CBS police procedural Criminal Minds. On the one hand, there are the first two seasons of the show, in which Mandy Patinkin's Gideon reigned over a team of relative fledgling agents in a hard-boiled crime drama. Patinkin would go on to famously and abruptly abandon Criminal Minds in 2007, claiming its depiction of violence against women to be too extreme and demoralizing, just as pre-production on the third season was to begin.

I liked Gideon, but as you say he was there at the beginning and didn t really have a chance for the whole cast to meld. When Rossi first came I m I thought they had made a Huge mistake, but it didn t take long for him to get into the character that I knew and loved. But the one character that for some reason didn t get the recognition he deserved is Hotchner. I thought he and his character were great. I think he took us though the highs & lows that a man in his position would have gone through very well. And I only watched the show a few times after he left. With both Hotch and Morgan gone it lost a lot!

Both were equally important. Gideon was necessary for the team to grow confident in their own abilities. His influence on Reid is obvious, but also Morgan and the others learned a lot from Gideon those first two seasons. Rossi was just as hard and stubborn as Gideon in those first few seasons, yet the team had grown by then so they could overcome that attitude. Something they wouldn't have been able to do with Gideon as he was their boss. Rossi was never their boss. Hotch and later Emily were. The team learned their craft under Gideon and they learned to fly and rely on each other as a team with Rossi.

I am a pretty avid fan of CM. My biggest issue with their whole family aspect is: if Garcia was such a close friend, the godmother of Derek's child, and they lived fairly close to eachother why is it they spend zero time together or know ZERO of what's going on in their lives? Morgan shows up to save Garcia again and they act as if they haven't seen eachother in years and never talk or share pictures? It bugs the crap outta me that they can't come up with a better way to show the audience the photos.

Its funny, Patakmin left the show because Gideon was probably getting to that darker side of his character and probably wanted change. But they probably didn t want that to change. As soon as he left, they bring in his replacement and they change his personality to a lighter side, opposite of Gideon s character. I think Rossi is a great character, but I think Gideon, if given the chance and a change of personality would have shined.

What I didn't Like is the reason Patinkin left. He read the scripts he knew what the show was about. But two seasons in he leaves? Something else had to happen I don't believe him. The show has history with problematic actors like Thomas Gibson.

I thought Rossi would be a god awful replacement for Gideon. I was wrong. They did it right. Rossi is different enough to be enjoyable in his own right. And the Gideon episodes have Elle, which is a strike against his episodes.

Rossi is amazing. I saw him first and I am so glad I did. Gideon was so stiff and a little bit of an asshole. I absolutely hated Gideon. Rossi was so heartwarming to me.
