What It Was Really Like To See Return Of The Jedi In 1983

Hard as it is to know now, there was a time when Star Wars wasn't exactly a sure thing. While many people have since grown up in a world where Star Wars has dominated, when the movies were coming out, they were just unique, independent movies whose success was far from certain. Before the world knew how Darth Vader was related to Luke Skywalker, or the fate of the Galactic Empire, Star Wars fans speculated just like they do today about the direction the series would take. They were delighted by new characters, and surprised by spoilers in the news. Wonder how it felt to be there? This is what it was really like to see Return Of The Jedi in 1983.

It was awesome. I remember Times Magazine having an article on Return Of The Jedi with Luke Skywalker on the cover. I was surprised by the title since it was, as we all know, supposed to be titled Revenge Of The Jedi. I looked at the pictures in that magazine everyday until the great day was there to go see it in the cinema. It was the conclusion of an amazing and impressive story. I loved it. I don t think many visits in the cinema have made a bigger impression. I still prefer the original version above the newer one(s.

People held their breaths when the Emperor was zapping Luke with the Force Lightning. Would Vader do anything? And then he did. And the whole theater cheered at the top of their lungs as Vader carried the Emperor & threw him to his death! It was so loud one started to wonder if the bloody roof of the theater was gonna start levitate. Back then, movies gave us what we all wanted! And we all felt united, no matter our backgrounds.

I distinctly remember a scene within the Rancor sequence that has NEVER been seen since on any home video format, Special Edition, or anything. At one point Luke jumps up and hangs on the floor grating above him, only for Jawas and Gamorrean guards and other creatures to stomp on his hands to make him fall. This happened ONLY in that original 1983 theatrical release.

I remember talking with my friends: Will Luke be a bad guy now if Darth Vader is his father? The final act of the movie was 3 fights going on at the same time, the tie fighter waves coming at the screen - it was glorious and we loved it. We turned a blind eye to the sillier things, like the ewoks and their net trap. it was that third act that blew us all away.

I heard about Luke and Leia being brother and sister on the school bus on the way home from school. I was going to see it on Saturday, but this girl saw it in Wednesday and spoiled it. Still, I loved it, and saw it twice in the theater. My favorite scene out of the movie and the entire trilogy is when Luke caught the lightsaber and went to town.

You put too much emphasis on what critics thought based on their reviews of the film. None of us cared at the time, as is the case now, to be bothered with opinions of the two or three reviewers that made it into newspapers. Even today s most influential film and TV ratings put forth by Rotten Tomatoes professional critics don t carry much weight.

I was there in 1983 at Grauman's Chinese theater in Hollywood for the premiere of Return. People did wait for days. But I'd never advise doing that to anyone. It was almost impossible to hear important points in the movie, because every time something significant would happen, the full theater would erupt in cheers, boos or whatever.

It was my 8th birthday party and off me and a group of my mates went to watch Superman III only to be devastated it was sold out. We were forced to watch this star wars thing that none of us had any knowledge of, it blew our tiny little minds. The speeder bikes were the best thing ever.

I saw it in Chapel Hill, NC. Several shows were sold out and we had to get tickets for a show late in the day. Amazing conclusion to the series. Probably the most exciting film I ever saw on the big screen. The only other film that I can think of that came close was 1989s s Batman.

Please do Batman's mania in 1989, please. Nothing has topped how we were all crazy before, during and after the movie premiered. It was amazing seeing everyone wearing their Batman gear. Not only the movie merch but the comic book merch that celebrated comic book Batman.
