Never heard of the game and know nothing about it. I liked the show on its own merits, especially the opening scene of the 1968 talk show and the beginning of bad stuff in the neighborhood (2003 Austin was nice. You could actually afford to live there then. I hope the series doesn't drift into Walking Dead territory with endless 'bad guys/tribes'. Been there, done that to death but it seems inevitable based on the end of the episode and especially since it's based on a game. But, for an opening episode of a new series, very good.

They can still build up that sort of relationship between Marlene and Ellie but make it feel more earned with weight hehind it with the altered way the tv show does the introductions of these two characters from the game. I can think of 6, at the top of my head. Also, where it can still convey ellie's love towards Marlene and her connection to the Fireflies.

In the show it was Marlene that put Ellie into the FEDRA academy suggesting a long standing relationship unknown to Ellie and all to keep her safe. Marlene saying do I look like your mother? Like she knew what Ellie s mother looked like. I trust the show runners to explain themselves in a satisfying way.

I think that just because we didn't see it in episode 1 doesn't mean it will not show up. There is going to be a bunch of backstories that is layered through the episodes. I'm not willing to say it won't be as impactful after just one episode and maybe 10 mins of screen time.

I think they will change it to elies mom, since the person that plays elie on the game is confirmed to play elies s mom in the show
