Yeah the Hobbit doesn't deserve to be on this list in my opinion. The Hobbit movies are unfortunately the victim of what I like to call Star Wars Syndrome in which the newer movie(s) are unfairly shit on because of the thing that was so revered that just happened to come first. From a narrative standpoint, the Hobbit films told their story while also setting up characters, items, events, and storylines that would come into play during the Lord of the Rings. And while, yes, there are characters in the films that were not in the original book, you have to remember that the book is told from Bilbo's perspective and several of the characters that were incorporated into the movies never directly interact with Bilbo. We don't know if they were actually there in the book or not. Same with Gandalf and his vision quest/temporary imprisonment by Sauron. These things flesh out the world, connect the story more directly to the Lord of the Rings, and serve as relatively engaging subplots that the book simply doesn't have. No they're not perfect, flawless movies (no movie is) but they're not the earth shattering shit shows that everyone for some reason claims them to be. Plus, they gave us Martin Freeman as Bilbo so clearly something good came out of these films regardless.

Where is One flew over the Cuckoo's nest?
Everything felt flat in comparison to the book and many things were paced terribly. It's a beautiful story and needs to be redone. I wish they focused more on the confabulation and the raw feeling of how the ward is. It should have been uncomfortable and sharp to behold. With an atmosphere of apprehension and dread. Someone like such as Stanley Kubrick should remake it. Please, the book is so good but knowing that the story is being desecrated by a shallow movie adaptation makes me feel horrible. The movie isn't terrible per se but it muffles the meaning behind the story with poor pacing and dull character development. For these reasons, I believe that the book would fit better as a TV miniseries.
Bromden is basically a side character and this causes the ending become flat because he wasn't even on the fishing trip, which was a key point in the story.
Mcmurphy is egocentric and unintelligent and this makes his character seem more of an unlikable person.
The Orderlies are nice for some reason. This kills the idea behind the ward being a torturous, oppressive location.
And Nurse Ratched is portrayed as actually kind of not a fully terrible person.

I think the 50's To Kill a Mockingbird needs a remake. Maybe Rocket Boys AKA October Sky too. And while I would say that the first How to Train Your Dragon movie is better than the first book, that it not true of the rest of both mediums' series. There were so many changes that they were effectively two completely different stories, completely removing a major subplot and most of Toothless's character (believe it or not, he could talk in the book. But he didn't speak Nordic like Hiccup, he spoke a dragon language that Hiccup could also speak/understand, also his mom was never separated from the tribe- they just added that in the movie because Disney so thoroughly established the trope of dead parents that even their competitors feel obligated to abide by it regardless of the source material.

What disappoints me the most about the faithless adaptation of the Percy Jackson books is the wasted potential. Had the people behind the movies been more faithful to the books, the product would not have just matched the Harry Potter movies. They would have surpassed them. With multiple companies trying to cash in and mimic the success of the MCU, this franchise probably could have come the closest to achieving that goal with the spin-off and sequel book series that are out now. However, that may not be happening anytime soon (or ever, no thanks to the movie.

Yes yes YES! Thank you for including Percy Jackson on this list! The books are wonderful but the first film flopped, and I had high hopes because it was directed by Chris Columbus, the director of the first two Harry Potter films, and he did an amazing job on the first two. The second film, Sea of Monsters, tried to recover the franchise, but with the disappointment of the first one, it failed miserably, even though it was better than The Lightening Thief.

THE SCARLET LETTER movie was more of a prequel to the novel, and had been made into a TV serial
THE LORD OF THE RINGS could do with a do-over
THE HITCH-HIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY (which admittedly was a radio show before the book)
IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, ONE FLEW OVER THE CUCKOO'S NEST, THE ENGLISH PATIENT all messed with their books, as did THERE WILL BE BLOOD from Upton Sinclair's OIL, and JOJO RABBIT crapped all over the source

I'm sorry. The Hobbit movies don't belong on this list. If anyone took the time to read the book (which I did) you would know that there is simply too much material to do it justice in one movie. Take a look at the animated Hobbit movie if you don't believe me. This needed to be at least two movies; Peter Jackson did it right by doing three and adding more of the book to the movies. You don't think so? I don't care.

Short novel into three. films Right because one six hour movie would have been better for the Hobbit. Yes, they could have shortened each of the three films some, but The Hobbit is not a short novel that can fit into a single film without either missing huge chunks of story, or making the movie crazy long. Nevermind the fact that we got Gandalf's story that was mentioned in the Fellowship book.

I don't know why Peter Jackson keeps getting criticized for The Hobbit. It wasn't his series. It was actually Benecio Del Toro's film. Ultimately, he stepped away from the project and the producers were scrambling to get a new director. Welcome back Peter Jackson. The 3 films and the addition of Evangeline Lily's Tauriel and her love triangle was all Benicio. Just Saying.

in 1998, the Friday night abc tv show the wonderful world of Disney did a TV movie based on the Mrs Murphy mystery book series by Rita Mae Brown called Murder she Purred, a Mrs Murphy mystery. Though it was awesome, I heard there were some major differences between movie and book. So, not only should they try again with that, but make a tv film show on the whole series!

Since Disney is remaking their animated films into live, I would rather see a reboot of The Chronicles of Prydain/The Black Cauldron. Only to make it a lot closer to the source materials and make it into a franchise. Also The Neverending Story really needs to remade, only make it a lot more closer to the actual book.

Had freeform not adapted The Mortal Instruments by Cassandra Clare into Shadowhunters which is amazing btw I would say it needed to be on the list. That being said Vampire Academy needs a do-over or at least a tv revival, that movie was freaking horrible and was nothing like the book at all.

The Hobbit movies were fine as they were. No need to redo them. I'd like them to redo and finish The Chronicles of Narnia. I say redo because of the actors being too old to reprise their roles. I wish they would have finished them.

What about the Timeline ( 1999 ) book by Michael Crichton ( the guy who wrote Jurassic Park )? The 2003 movie had no input from the author which people who read the book can guess. From Texas 1: 32 PM Central Time November 30th 2022

Animal Farm (1954)

I love that PJO was the very first scene showed on this video since that adaptation was so bad Uncle Rick has criticized that movie since the beginning and if the author hates it you know is bad

Cirque du Freak.
This legitimately could have been a Vampire Harry Potter, with the potential to be darker.
Great twist on Vampires. Great story. Awesome characters with vast potential.

Most books to movies need to be at least two and a half hours to three hours long to do it justice. Also have the screenwriters need to stay away from changing things that destroys the story

What about the I am Number 4 book series?
It's a good book, in my opinion and the movie cut a lot of scenes from the book, which made it seem bad. When in fact it was really good.

I love The Black Cauldron, it's a nice adaptation of the first two books from The Chronicles of Prydain, but I think another adaptation would work if it was held by Studio Ponoc.

Ella Enchanted was MUCH better as a book - they basically scrapped the entire original story when they made the movie. I would love to see it redone but with the original story

I came here to make sure the disastrous Peter Johnson movies are on here. The opening scene confirmed and I'm always happy to see the acknowledgment of how they did us dirty.

the end result felt more like a money-grab than an appreciation of the author's work--> this is applicable to practically all movies adopted from books. especially today.
