I wish there could have been more ties, but thats how awards work.
Awards dont define success, popularity, or even superiority though, look at:
- Follies
- Ragtime
- Miss Saigon
- Flower Drum Song
- The Light in the Piazza
- Wicked
- Funny Girl
- On The Twentieth Century
- Mame
- Sweet Charity
- West Side Story
- Gypsy
- Sunday in the Park with George
- Into the Woods
- Come From Away
- Waitress
- Mean Girls
- Beautiful: The Carole King Musical
- Next to Normal
- Chicago
- Grey Gardens
If you dont know a musical or several from this list, I highly recommend searching them
Among many others.
Though I do agree that Nine was the better musical

Critics hated B&tB on Broadway? why? they bashed Disney for doing something new? oh yeah and Belle lost to Mother Gothel in this ceremony
Oh come on, if it were the other way around this would still make the list
well 1776 wasn't so lucky when they were up for best revival (but it was also a strong year for revivals as it was up against Cabaret and The Sound of Music)
eh I've seen both Wicked and Avenue Q. The songs are even funnier in Avenue Q when you are sitting in the audience (it was a pretty close call between the two I mean, at least all four best musical shows got love) one of the few awards Wicked didn't win? HA! I've heard the score to Assassins more times than any other show that ceremony

no tea no shade to DEH but great comet honestly deserved to beat it. the amazing vocals in both (platt and steele? anyone) are undeniable, but the story, the amazing adaptation quality, the great acting, the beautiful harmonies, the opera as a whole and its self awareness in prologue. interacting with the audience, the way that steele sings petersburg and HFKRKRB i could go on for years about this musical, but i could really only rave about DEH for a minute or so. comet has so many little things that you only see or hear on a second or fortieth viewing, but DEH is much more mainstream and straightforward.

Okay, four of the wins were far from shocking. 1776, Hello Dolly, A Funny Thing Happened, and Music Man, were clear Broadway musical staples.
Passion, Nine, and Avenue Q, shows Broadway's nod to artsy shows.
Will Rogers Follies, was clearly a political choice. Dream Girls, Hair, West Side Story, and maybe Chicago, may have also been victims of being considered political.
Finally, West Side Story, Oliver, Chicago, and Funny Girl, worked much better on the big screen.

Its kinda sad to hear some saying that avenue q doesnt deserve tony, because it is the best musical to me. I fell in love with musical because of avenue q. It is sensational, relatable, hilarious and has great songs and amazing puppetry. Ive never seen a musical like avenue q. I love wicked but avenue q totally deserved the best musical. It breaks my heart that i never get to see that show since its already closed. They really should make that obc recording into dvd.
reply

Avenue Q is objectively better in most every conceivable way; it was more groundbreaking, more different, had better writing and incorporated puppets in its act. Wicked is fun to attend, but at its core it's just more of the same that Broadway had already seen for many years. Sure, it's more popular. but popular seldom means BETTER.

An updated list really ought to mention Waitress, Legally Blonde, and The Lightning Thief: The Percy Jackson Musical. Waitress was up against Dear Evan Hansen, Legally Blonde against Spring Awakening, but the Percy Jackson Musical's snub is simply inexcusable. It didn't even receive a nomination. Please respect that show.
reply

I just cant bring myself to respect wicked. They can mess with recent musicals and musicals that are good but not great but PLEASE stop messing with the CLASSICS like the Wizard of Oz. its fine if you mess with Disney movies and remake them and stuff but the movies with debbie Reynolds and even Chorus Line. just STOP.
reply

How could you not include sponge bob it was nominated for 14 Tonys and lost to some dark musical with no dancing and ver little singing by tony saloon it was so bad I cant even remember the name but it was a political musical in a political time so we cant recognize one like sponge bob about optimisim
reply

I feel like the word shockingly is an over-exaggeration. A lot of these musicals seemed to have lost to another classic musical. It's not like they lost to a musical that no one has heard since. It becomes a matter of process of elimination.

That if you confess with your mouth, , and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you confess and are saved
reply

Parade. If you haven't heard of it do yourself a favor and go watch/listen to it. It's one of the most incredible pieces of theatre ever, and I will never take that back. At least it won Best Score and Best Book of a musical.
reply

Okay but we're not gonna talk about Next to Normal lost the Tony for best musical. But still won a freaking Pulitzer prize. I believe it still took home the Tony for best original score but how is this not on the list?
reply

You should do one for musicals that were robbed for Best Revival. The musical that should be in the top three should be Falsettos, which lost to Hello Dolly, which I will forever be salty about.
reply

wicked probably would have won if avenue q hadn't come the same year. avenue q was not like any other show that had been on broadway previously and for me, it makes sense that it won.
reply

Hadestown winning over lighter hearted musicals like The Prom, Beetlejuice, Aint Too Proud and Tootsie shows that people still love to sniff their own farts to artsy fartsy shit.
reply

I honestly think the Carrie revival deserved more because it only ran for about a month with like 60 performances, and everyone is doing it. Correct me if Im wrong
reply

watching this in 2020, I think beetlejuice belongs on this list. Hadestown was great, but how did beetlejuice not win a single one, not even for scenic design?
reply

my heart actually breaks seeing into the woods lose. Its like one of my favourite shows of all time and i get it was to Phantom. but still. i'm now dead inside.
reply

I saw both on broadway and the only song I remember from Wicked is defying gravity while I remember every song in Avenue Q, in my view a much better musical.
reply

Chicago didn't deserve Best Musical against A Chorus Line. A Chorus Line is a juggernaut of a musical that shines light on the lives of the Chorus members.
reply

Alternate title: Musicals featuring casts of color that went on to be super famous lose to musicals featuring a white cast that no one has ever heard of.
reply

Wait wiat wait! Why wouldn't Phantom Of The Opera win against Into The Woods. I don't think Into The Woods should have won. It's not surprising at all
reply

Thats the trouble with becoming an cultural con. everybody knows you, everybody loves you, but you can't get any recognition or respect.
reply

Into the Woods losing to Phantom is like Pulp Fiction losing to Forrest Gump - one great winner means an equally worthy competitor misses out
reply

For me the greatest travesty is Matilda not winning. Not seen Kinky Boots but I can't see how it's better than Matilda and I like Cyndi Lauper.
reply

The Chicago we know and love today is not the 1970s version. The 90s revival is the one we know now so no, it shouldn't have won in the 70s
reply

1776 is good enough to beat out Hair. Hot take, I know, but I stand by it.
Probably because Im John Adams. But still.

reply

Legally Blonde the Musical deserved at least one Tony out of the 7 nominations it was a really good musical,
not to heavy
