Rating: 4.0; Vote: 1
Once upon a time doesn't get much better than this. For this list, were looking at the most influential, and widely loved, classic fairy tales. Though well be including folk tales, stories that began as relatively contemporary novels or theater productions wont be considered, no matter how popular theyve since become. Translation? As much as we love Peter Pan and Pinocchio, they wont be seen here today. Our list includes Rapunzel, Beauty and the Beast, Rumpelstiltskin, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood and more! In regard to Rumpelstiltskin, I agree with your lessons, but do keep in mind, the girl's life was at risk when she made the deal for her child. If you had to make that choice, I'm sure you would be hard pressed NOT to take the one that saves your life. The father/miller should have kept his mouth shut for his careless boast got the avalanche running, and could not be stopped. Another lesson you can learn is 'Careless/boastful words can be fatal! '.

I would not have had Little Red Riding Hood on the list. I would have replaced it with the Nightinggale by Hans Christian Andersen. It too tells the story of how beauty is found within and is not all about what can be created artificially. Truly best represented in the form of a small bird which sings like the angels.
Other tales with powerful messages by HCA are the Little Matchgirl and the Snow Queen.

1001 nights tells the true story of how barbaric Muslims are and how they disrespect females. It's also accurate in that, until now, they have literal belief in genies they refer to as the jinn they encounter on a regular basis. Don't take my word and search the jinn and you will see how backward these people we encounter really are. Catholics are much the same.

My favorite fairy tales that are shown on this video are The Snow Queen, Beauty and the Beast, 1001 Nights, Rumpelstiltskin, Snow White (I prefer the Disney version, Sleeping Beauty, and The Little Mermaid (I prefer the Disney version.

Underrated: Rapunzel
We only have Barbie as Rapunzel, Tangled and Into The Woods that's it.
Overrated: Beauty and the beast and Cinderella. All done to death especially Cinderella. which has been told 1000 times through movies.

reply

If there's one thing I can fault Little Red Riding Hood for, along with several other stories admittedly, it's the vilification of wolves and turning them into villains when they're just animals like any other

You should do a top 10 of Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre! Bring some exposure back to these delightful fairytales brought to life by famous stars of the 80s and 90s. I loved them as a kid.
reply

I didnt know that Hans Christian Anderson is like The Ugly Duckling and Walt Disney sees himself as Cinderella. I had no idea. Is there a fairytale that the Grimm Brothers see themselves as.
reply

I love Cinderella! The tale of rags to riches, working hard to achieve your goal, and staying strong in a dark time its just so great! I agree so much with it being number 1.
reply

YES! DS9's 'Rumplestilskin'! Thanks for including that clip!
BTW, you need to do a TOP DS9 episodes and characters list (Bashir needs to be very close to the top)

My favorite fairy tale in the world is always going to be Snow White. In my book, she is always at the top of my list. Mostly the Once upon A Time story.
reply

The correct list. The best list. The annoying thing is that sleeping beauty is just a honourable mention. Still this list is the best. Hands down.

Who would win when it comes to fairytales? Hans Christian Anderson, Grimm Brothers or the infamous magic man that we all love Walt Disney?

No matter the renditions; there is only ONE version of Rumpelstiltskin I'll prefer, dearie.
Same thing applies with Snow White
