There are so many good Christmas episodes for sitcoms. I sometimes just watch the Christmas episodes of favorite shows at Christmas. You're correct that The Office had great Christmas episodes. You did pick my favorite one, so bravo!
I have a soft spot for Home Improvement for my favorite Christmas episode, probably. It's Twas the Night Before Chaos from season 4. I love it because it's a bunch of relatives that have ended up in the Taylor household. Jill's parents, Tim's brother & sister-in-law and the twins are there along with Tim, Jill, and their sons. It makes me feel all warm and happy since it reminds me of family Christmases when I was a kid. We would all gather at my grandparents. My grandparents are dead, my mom is dead, and one of my uncles is dead, so I can't relive that, you know?
I also loved The Middle and how they did a Christmas episode every year. They were really good at putting in Easter eggs as nods to classic Christmas specials. The easiest one to catch is the fight over King Moonracer as to whether he is a toy or a flying lion. They did do a nod to the Grinch as well as Charlie Brown Christmas. I liked that The Middle always did holiday episodes every year. It's a sitcom about a family, and let's face it, holidays are a huge part of a family's year. It made sense to have a new Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas episode every season. The Thanksgiving ones are my favorites though.
Family Matters is also near and dear to my heart. They had wonderful Christmas episodes. I love the one from season 6 (Miracle on Elm Street) where Richie brings home a homeless man (who may or may not be Santa) and Laura's beloved rag doll gets thrown away so Urkel goes through the dump to find her doll. Second favorite is the classic It's Beginning to Look a Lot Like Urkel from season 4 where it's a take on It's a Wonderful Life except the angel has Laura be a nerd to see what's like to be Urkel and Steve is the Winslow's son and not Urkely.
Also, how can we forget The Golden Girls with Have Yourself a Very Little Christmas from season 5 where they're volunteering at a homeless shelter and Stan shows up. They had great Christmas episodes with interesting premises.
The Wonder Years episode A Very Cutlip Christmas from season 4 is excellent because you see a whole other side to Coach Cutlip.
While not a funny episode, The Andy Griffith Show season 1 Christmas Story is beautifully done. While I Love Lucy is my favorite show ever, their Christmas episode is mostly a clip show (but the new scenes with the tree and Santa are extremely good, so I wish it was a full length episode about preparing for Christmas.
You guys should change this and do different decades. Like 1960s top 10 Christmas episodes, 1970s, 1980s, 1990s, 2000s, 2010s. There are so many good ones.

The Nanny animated episode. Now, deserving of an honorable at least, theres also Living Kringle from Living Single. The repeated attempts at singing Winter Wonderland do get annoying, but its a very sweet, heartwarming, and funny rumination on the different characters values during the holiday season that culminates in LSs spin on the age-old message about friends, family, and the Christmas spirit. Synclair especially shines in this episode. Theres also the Home Improvement episode that pays homage to the old stop-motion Christmas specials, which is quite sweet for this show.

I think The Bath Item Gift Hypothesis should have been #1. Then there'd be room for:
-The Maternal Congruence. The 2nd appearance of Leonard's mother
-The Santa Simulation. Where we learn the real reason why Sheldon hates Christmas
-The Cooper Extraction. A parody of It's a Wonderful Life.
-The Clean Room Infiltration. Amy's Victorian-themed Christmas party. The ending is almost as heartwarming as The Bath Item Gift Hypotheses

Home Improvement for sure were the best. My kids had to watch Mark sing in a choir of 4 with Noel on their robes but they lined up backwards.
Whos Leon?
He was born in the manger next door.
And the oldest son wants to go skiing with his friends. Tim tells him, Christmas isnt about spending time with people you like, its about spending time with your family.
This list is lacking without the inclusion of Home Improvement.

I feel like at least 1 of Home Improvement's Christmas episodes deserves a mention. Tim's annual lighting contest was always fun to watch, but my favorite might be the one where Tim & Al spend most of the episode stuck at an airport only to be hit by low visibility as they fly home until the boys turn on the lighting display they set up in his absence

Oh, you picked my favorite Friends Christmas episode) It is one of the best!
Also, how come there were no Scrubs episodes? There was one truly wonderful Christmas episode - My Best Moment, where they all collectively saved life of a single father, took take of his son and everybody thought of that moment as the best moment in medicine.

reply

So strange you only think comedies have the best Christmas episodes I will tell you the ONE episode I seek out every Christmas to watch. Season 1 Episode 9 - The Man In The Fallout Shelter on BONES it's wonderful and if you don't cry you have no soul - It's amazingly good.

This was a bad list. No Happy Days. No I Love Lucy. No Laverne and Shirley. No Dick Van Dyke. No Cosby Show. And the Golden Girls was an honorable mention. Not a all time list to my wife and I. Unless you look are only looking at the past 15yrs for the most part.

The Big Bang Theory had some really great Christmas episodes for sure, but the first one stands as my very favorite! That endearingly awkward hug is such a wonderful moment between Sheldon and Penny! This marvelous episode really should have ranked much higher!

My favorite sitcom Christmas episode, and the one that I watch every Season, is 'Ebenezer Sanford' from 'Sanford And Son', from 1975, where Fred dreams the visits of Christmases Past, Present, and Yet To Come, a la Charles Dickens.
reply

Yes, yes, Sheldon and Penny, Sheldon and Penny - no one ever talks about the emotional step forward for Penny and Leonard in this episode, the very sweet gifts between them and the reconciliation after their sorta-fight.
reply

Maybe a controversial comment but that is the worst The Office Christmas episode since its so mean and cold hearted. My favorite is A Benihana Christmas with (forgot the name) the Belznickel episode being my second favorite
reply

New Girl was definitely one of my favorites. The Office- too many good ones to pick. But there were at least 4 That 70's Show Christmases, each with a fun premise. HIGHLY disappointed none of those made the list: (

I love the Friends-Episodes most. And then HIMYM. And Big Bang Theory. It's a big Thing for Asperger Autists to show their Emotions and hug someone. It means a lot for them and still more for their significant others!

Some other sitcoms with good christmas episodes are The brady bunch, 8 simple rules, sweet life of zack and Cody, happy days, family matters, everybody loves raymond home improvement, the simpsons and the flintstones
reply

Frazier Miracle on 3rd or 4th street
Happy Days Fonzie's Lonely Christmas
Newhart No Room at the Inn
All three are worthy of #1 on any list and are all better you don't even mention them?

reply

Lily WAS a grinch. and she deserverd to be called so (atleast from Ted's perspective) in that moment. also, she almost ruined Marshal's christmas because she was angry at Ted. so yeah, double grinch.
reply

My favorite christmas sitcom episode is from the show home improvement twas the blight before christmas because I remember watching this episode where tim completes in a christmas lightning contest.
reply

I have something thing to say. Full House is the devil and more insidious of a show will never be made. A friend tortured a roommate in college by turning on Full House reruns. They never made up.
reply

My favorite stuff to watch for Christmas is Unaccompanied Minors, Home Alone, Phineas and Ferb Christmas Special, which is my personal favorite, and How The Grinch Stole Christmas 2000.
reply

Um, there were Christmas episodes before 1990. All in the Family, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Bewitched, MASH, The Beverly Hillbillies, Green Acres, and Good Times are missing.
reply

You didn't mention the Thundermans Christmas episode it's sooo good, Max gets a visit from Christmas past, present and future and he learns the value of Christmas
reply

How is Festivus not #1, not even in the top 10? No other episode on this list created a real Holiday, Festivus is recognized in Florida as a legitimate holiday!
reply

I don't remember the name of the episode but it was Boy Meets World where Eric befriends the homeless boy at the mall when he's being Santa and brings him home
reply

This list is wayyy too top heavy on recent series. Ms. Mojo you all really need to experience more of life. Also not a great list even for recent times.
reply

Sorry, but the best Christmas episode is from Ted Lasso, Carol of the Bells, Season 2, Episode 4. All other top lists are now invalidated.
reply

I like my christmas episodes to be more realistic like that 70s show where the gang throws a holiday keger and Eric throws up on red's shoes
reply

Great list! I always loved the holiday armadillo. Brooklyn 99 had some great Christmas episodes that should have gotten on the list tho
reply

i actually saw that big bang theory episode it was great and awesome to see sheldon actually hug penny for the first time
reply

how is the strike not in the top 10. It not only should be firmly in there, but it may even have a shot at #1.
