Only adults notice these fishy things in The Little Mermaid. For this list, well be looking at details, references, and underlying meanings from the Disney classic that likely go over the heads of kids. Our countdown includes Chef Louis is insane, Eric's decision-making, Ariel CAN WRITE, and more! What do YOU now notice in Little Mermaid as an adult?

What about Ariel not having a character arc (aka not growing or learning anything in the end? John Musker admitted that Ariel has no character arc while Sabastian and Triton do.
I know there's alternative ending where Ariel has a clear appolgy hugging her father after Ursula's death. But, to admit that you're protagonist has no arc (the main reason why people hate Ariel and the original film as a whole, am I missing something? Are we missing something to this?

The person who narrated missed the point of #7. Eric did not choose to marry Vanessa. Ursula hypnotized him so he would marry her, Ariel becomes her slave, she likely would rule over the ocean, then she would kill Eric to inherit his kingdom and wealth.
EDITED TO ADD: I see the narrator mentioned the trance state. I will say she has a point on Ariel since he was immediately smitten with her after she rescued him.

I was 13 when this movie was released in 89, and I've seen it hundreds of times. This movie soundtrack is one of the best musical soundtracks handsdown! Little Mermaid changed Disney animated films for good. In my opinion Little Mermaid never ages and I hope that the upcoming live version is amazing. The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, Beauty and the Beast and Lion King are top notch films even at my current age (don't judge me lol!

Ursula said herself that she was banished also in the stage production and remake she Triton sister true he didnt really do anything about the poor subjects that got in his sister grasp but having sea creatures pull you isnt really a whole lot different to us being pulled by a horse also I heard somewhere that if Ariel wrote Eric a note explaining her situation it would make her seem crazy and desperate
reply

That chain one upsets me because I watched this as a child and could easy tell that it looks like what all the other royal Land Lover tales have with the horses. Its not chains. Its like a horse pulling the buggies back before automobiles. As an adult it does like bad though since it implies they may be 2nd class citizens. Though I doubt that is what they were going for.

Nobody's going to mention the fact that the dolphins wouldn't be able to stay deep underwater for that long, that Ursula eats live shrimp while Triton accuses humans of being fish eating barbarians, some fish talk while others (like the shark) don't, and Flotsam and Jetsam would have eaten Ursula's tentacles (moray eels eat octopus? Great movie still!

Based on how you describe many of these scenarios, you either had a bad experience in life at some point, or were somehow insanely misguided when it comes to many things but there are quite a few flaws in your descriptions given throughout this particular episode. Try sticking more to facts rather than letting your emotions guiding your opinions.

9: 08 not going to lie, I am actually looking forward to seeing that scene in the remake (if they include it) because of how sick its going to look to see Javier Bardem go rampage mode but hopefully his King Triton will also realize his mistake afterwards and feel bad like in the original.
reply

The chains arent chains they are harnesses like with horses - however the fact that fish and dolphins are pulling them is very odd.
Though its not apparent in the movie that I recall maybe Ariel isnt allowed to tell Eric who she is even by writing? Or maybe she can only sign her name

reply

Ariel's friend didn't move the staute into Ariel's cave, it must of fell inside her cave through the hole above the cave when the ship sinked into the ocean. If you remember the ship was sealing in the area where her cave is at. He must of gone to the cave alone & went to go & tell her.

Who in Gods name thought ANY part of this list holds any relevance or concern to question subliminal messages? This is the most ridiculous compilation Ive ever been exposed to! But, most of entertainment is based on BS creating a need for nothing. Try again!
reply

You mention Eric being under Ursula's spell when he's about to marry her but still hold him accountable for rushing the marriage. That's kind of the point -- he's completely under the spell of the most powerful sea witch. He's not at fault here!
reply

4: 16 he was being hypnotized by the sea witch, in the movie when he saw her singing below on the shore at night we see something change in his eyes and he began to sound way more monotone afterwards. Just something I thought I should point out

Ariels nudity in the film is still more modest when compared to the Andersen fairy tale in which the titular little mermaid was TOPLESS and used her long hair to cover up her nude body when she reunited with the prince in her human form.
reply

Overall. .. Ariel is a Teenager. .. I have rarely met a teenager that IS NOT Selfish, and thinks the world revolves around them. So I would disagree. .. as for the Adult Stuff. .. ehh. . Yeah. .I already knew because of my Older Siblings.
reply

The story is originally was written by Anderson who now it is known that it was a tragic gay story between him and another guy who was straigjt. Anderson couldnt write the story as a merman, so ariel was basicly suppose to be a man
reply

Well were on the little mermaid can you do the top 10 dumbest mistakes in Disney movies what do you mean by that is the dumbest decisions characters made for example Ariel trading your voice to Ursula or Ana getting engaged to Hans
reply

If I remember correctly, the merpeople had their own written language in one of the TV episodes. So maybe for the movie it was just in English so we could follow along but maybe in reality she could only write in the merlanguage?

This was one interesting top of an interesting film, thank You Ms Mojo, this was definetly the Best way to spend My wednesday, and i wish You a happy wednesday as well, see You soon and take care, greetings from Colombia.
reply

Flounder isnt a flounder, thats just his name. According to Disney Wiki, Flounder is a tropical yellow fish with teal stripes.
Eric is completely under a spell and is doing whatever Vanessa tells him to do.

reply

In the DVD commentary, they talk about how the statue was made to be lighter than normal, so that they could see the statue one last time before it sinks down into the ocean during the storm scene.
reply

To add to #9:
There was a magazine Disney had in the early 2000's where it had a comic explaining how Flounder asked for the help of a whale to lift and take the statue to the grotto.

reply

As a kid I get very scared when she shook her boobies to the poor mermaids that turned into those plant like monsters it give me chills back then, and even know just thinking about it
reply

1. Eric was being mind controlled by Ursula, logic goes out the window.
2. Ariel is 16 in the movie. Shes naive. So knowing better isnt her first thought
My only issues with this list

reply

Maybe someone has already mentioned this but MsMojo didn't include the Male Organ on the cover of the OG VHS tape and the Priest popping a Boner. I still have a copy of the OG VHS tape!
reply

One thing I realized when I rewatched the movie a few weeks ago (as a current 20 year old) is that Jodi Benson. has such an attractive villain laugh she did such a great ass job as Vanessa
reply

In the book Poor Unfortunate Souls; Villians Book 3, Ursulas backstory gets some more details. SPOILER: King Triton is also to blame as they are related and Ursula was banished by him
reply

I have to be honest with you, the fact that Ariel wore nothing over her lower torso when she was transformed into a human still shocked me as a child.
Ian Robert Scott Laidlaw

reply

JUST watched this on Thanksgiving Day and wondered how some of it didnt scare the crap out of me as a kid lol. And yes, Ive always wondered why she didnt write Eric a damn note.
reply

I really really REALLY hope Ursulas backstory is explored in the live action movie 5: 53 as for the flounder thing and Ariel calling him Gabby I just assumed it was a nickname
