Unlike the painting from the Dutch Golden Age, this film sadly wont go down as a great work of art. They can't all be as successful as Harry Potter. Sometimes it's just best to leave a book a book and move on. If you noticed problems in the GoldFinch movie and what them explained, you've come to the right place! For this list, were taking a look at the reasons why John Crowleys adaptation of Donna Tartts novel was met with a mostly lukewarm response following its TIFF premiere. Seriously I don't get why people and so many critics hate that movie so much. To be honest I haven't read the book yet, so I watched just as a film without any expectations and it blew me away the whole two and a half hours I was emotionally invested I loved the nonlinear story telling, of course I understand that it's not everyone's cup of tea but the acting was stellar, the cinematography was excellent and the soundtrack was on par. And it made me want to read the book. What else are people expecting. This film is amazing, it made me cry and it made me smile and yes it's not a film that is meant for casual watching. If you invested your attention and you have the mental capacity to follow the story than it will be a great film to watch. On the other hand, if you're looking for a movie to watch casually than watch something else.

I'm here to defend the movie.
1. Everything was great the cinematography, acting, directing, but nothing of it counts if you don't have enough time to develop anything. The movie would be great if it was longer. Miniseries instead of 2 hour movie. It's a real thiccc book after all.
2. People who read the book are going to like the movie, because their memory is going to fill up the underdeveloped relationships and too shorted story, but people who haven't read it have nothing to work with.
3. It's definitely not boring. That's the vibe of Donna's book. It's long, but the story is about Theo being caught up in his own thoughts.
4. Finn Wolfhard's accent is hilariously amazing don't let anyone tell you other wise.
Conclusion it just needs to be longer so PLEASE someone make a goldfinch miniseries.

I loved the novel, but I agree this is a failed adaptation. There are many loose threads that need to be connected and no significant character development.
I watched it, hoping it would coalesce at some point, but it never happened. Granted, the novel was difficult to adapt to the screen, but many dramatic opportunities were missed in the film. A disappointment for viewers, and a huge disappointment, Im sure, for Donna Tartt who is a meticulous writer. But even in the novel, there is a lack of verisimilitude in certain scenes, especially in the first 100 pages, most notably in the description of the gallery bombing.

I also think the story should have been linear. I read the book so I was able to follow, but even for me it seemed confusing to switch back and forth. I couldn't understand why they chose to do that. I also think they left out a lot from the book. I don't think they could have made the story any simpler or cut anything extra. If anything I would have preferred the film to be longer if they included more detail from the book. I also think the tone was off. The story is very tragic and somehow that didn't come across through the film IMO.

because of the weird jumping back and forth it made it hard to follow it was kind of like watching a trailer, going from adult, to kid, back to adult, back to kid, they only way you could properly understand what was happening was if you had read the book. I think if they did it in chronological order is would have been a million times better. I read half the book so I knew what was happening but I was still captivated enough to not find it boring overall I think it was pretty good I just hated the back and forth

Great book. Did you, MsMojo, read it? If you did then you would know how crazy the book was, crazy great. But from your narrative of your video I just cannot believe you really read it or if you did, perhaps the Spark Notes version? No? Then you miss the whole gist of the storyline. I've never ever walked into a movie made from a great novel expecting the whole of the novel to exist on the screen, impossible to do. The movie was fine. You need to read more, video less. Happy reading!

I have just finished reading the book. To anyone thinking of doing so, save yourself the pain. It goes on and on and on with painful detail making you constantly think what is going on! The characters all keep doing implausible things that made me also keep on asking why would they do this? I wish I hadn't bothered and from the common thoughts put towards the film I think I might just save myself more time. Just my opinion, take it or leave it: )

As I agree with a majority of the list. There were s couple themes in this movie that if taken more for the overall message can be rather heartfelt.
The book was incredible. But take the book out of the equation and the movie had far more potential. I enjoyed it. And it is my current favorite film. But there is more I wish to have seen taken from the book and put on screen.

I kind of agree here on this. According to the filmmakers and producers. Sometimes, less is more and better. Making a book adaptation much longer, isn't always a necessity. Cutting down plot points and changing the source material. Feel justified to me. Let it be what book to film and tv adaptations alike, become what producers and filmmakers demand it to be.

I actually really loved the movie. I feel like if you come to the film not having read the book though you might find the movie a little boring. I do remember thinking it was a strange choice of book to adapt to a movie.
They really should have made The Secret History into a movie instead, that would have made such an aesthetic thriller. I can only dream.

reply

I loved the book. was so disappointed of the movie.
Lots of untold, unexplained, keeps jumping from one things to another. it would have deserved so much more. Cast was good, loved the general atmosphere but it doesn''t make you interested.
If to understand the movie u need to read the book. boh, just read the book

reply

Superficial, rambling, boring soap opera. Ironic that Fabritius was killed in the Delft explosion in 1654, along with his studio and many of his paintings. The painting 'The Goldfinch' by Fabritius is housed in the Mauritshuis, The Hague, Netherlands, as is the painting of Dr Tulp by Rembrandt.
reply

The movie was bad because the uniqueness of the book was the nouns that made it aesthetically pleaseing. You just cant put thing like that in a 2 hour film. If you don't understand what I'm saying obviously you didn't actually READ THE BOOK. TBH you saw the cast lineup and judged it from that.
reply

I thought the book and movie was both really good, of all the movie adaptations I've saw in my opinion the books generally are mostly better, in writing, everything its explained more and sometimes not everything can be easy to be shown on screen but I really enjoyed this movie
reply

I agree that being non linear it seems messy and confusing but I also think thats kind of the point Theo is trying to recover from all this trauma, all the while struggling to find a home. Adolescence is messy, growing up is hard. They didnt try to sugarcoat anything.
reply

I read the book when I heard about a movie being made. Took me three months and I really enjoyed it. But when I watched the DVD after getting it for Christmas, I was disappointed. I really liked the cast and cinematography but everything else was just not good.
reply

As much as l really loved the book I heated this movie. Very very very badly done. If you want my advice read the fantastic book and try to completely avoid the movie it will just completely ruins everything you may love about the story
reply

To be fair, some of these criticisms apply to the book as well. But Donna Tartt managed to pull it off and make it compelling and moving, while the movie didn't. I think the choice to jump around in time was the primary problem here.
reply

Just finished watching the movie. I actually enjoyed it. Also, I hated the book. So super unpopular opinion but for me, the movie failed because the source material itself is not really good. Hey, to each his own.
reply

I loved the book and found the movie a nice visualization.
Had I not read the book I think I would have been totally confused and bored.
They should have made a miniseries and included all the wonderful details.

reply

and we're to assume that ms. mojo also read the entire book? how can you be so critical of a movie not being faithful to the source material when it's so blatantly obvious that you haven't read the book?
reply

I feel like Oakes and Finn killed their roles! Am I the only one who loved Finns accent! Im just sad cause Im sure theyll never do a TSH adaptation. A miniseries would be great so they dont rush everything.
reply

Interesting. Never thought I would disagree with you guys so completely. I thought the filmmakers really nailed it. Fantastic movie. The story is tight. The acting is tremendous. Just a great film.
reply

I didn't read the book, but the movie had so much potential and almost had the right pieces. just didn't get it well together. the trailer was 10/10 to me, but not the movie itself.
reply

the only thing i didnt like was they made theo in love w/ pippa rather than him just seeing her as a tie to his mother like he did in the book bc he was in love w/ boris not pippa
reply

I couldn't stop crying by the end of the movie, it seems as if people are judging the movie by the trailer instead of the movie itself, maybe they didn't understand it?
reply

I feel like the book is way too detailed to be accurately depicted in the length of a movie. Wouldve been much better as a limited series on Netflix or something like that
reply

I actually think that this movie is pure masterpiece on it's own way.
Its only hard to understand to ones who can't live-in, in the feelings of the movie

reply

The Goldfinch, by Carel Fabritius is housed in the Mauritshuis, The Hague, Netherlands, as is the painting of Dr Tulp by Rembrandt - not the Met Museum.
reply

I read the book first and really liked it and didn't like the movie so much, i thought the actors were doing their best though, it's just bit of a mess
