Imma be the one to say it. (I love this movie musical but it sure ain't romantic.
An American In Paris.
Girl rejects guy, he finds a way to get her number, she rejects him and asks that he never call her again, so what does he do? Find out where she works and literally GOES to her and flirts her up while shes working. She only agrees to go out with him to get him to go away. Let's also remember that there was a girl who was hopelessly in love with Jerry. Sure, she was rich but she was lonely. That doesnt make her less human. She gives him LOADS of money to help with his painting career. This doesnt mean he has to love her, but what he then did to her was extremely irresponsible and hurtful. He knew that he might not end up with Lise and he wanted her to keep sponsoring him and getting him art shows, so he dragged her along and acted like he might be in love with her without her knowing shes option B. All while Jerry (played by Gene Kelly who was 39 at the time) chased a girl who canonically was said to be 19. When it looks like he won't wind up with the girl he loves. He tells Milo (girl option B) that hes always been in love with her, kisses her, and abandons her the same night
What a gentleman.

i thought bring it one being on this list would annoy me the most but it was love actually lol there's a difference between romanticizing creepy behavior/toxic relationships and flawed characters, like yes it's wrong that alan rickman was a cheater but it was never shown to be ok and it wasn't hugh gran'ts fault that martine mccutcheon was called fat, the only fair criticism is andrew lincoln being a lowkey creep lmao but it's not like keira ended up with him, she might have been moved but that's it. and there's nothing even wrong with telling people how you feel about them, it's not like he tried to pressure her into being with him?
i can't rmr the characters names sry
eta: LMFAO some of the honorable mentions are actually worse than the ones on the list and y'all didn't even include the notebook

I think the kiss scene in Gone With the Wind is really misinterpreted. Technically he forces a kiss on her but Scarlet chooses to sleep with him. It is a scene about surrendering to reality and letting go of the fantasy she has built up in her mind about how her life should have been. She has intense feelings for Rhett which she has constantly belittled throughout the movie and in this scene she is allowing herself to live in the moment and give up her toxic feelings for Ashley. That is why in the next scene when she wakes up she looks extremely content and relaxed, and why she is upset when Rhett then asks for a divorce. The book does a better job of portraying Scarletts emotions during that scene than the movie does.

The premise of 'She's All That' was never that Laney was unattractive, Zack even said he could deal with a girl who wasn't pretty easier, Laney was odd, antisocial, off putting, and frequently condescending to other students. I'm not saying she didn't have good reason, or that it was always unwarranted, but it made her an outsider in spite of the fact that she was obviously pretty under her attempts to mask it. Her looks were not the reason she was picked, nor was it why Zack didn't want her for the bet at first. There were other movies that deserved the number one spot for this list far more.

I disagree with Grease and 50 First Dates, First song of Grease okay I can see that a little bit since its that one line and I feel it was mostly because it rhymed, and 50 first dates, come on, yes hes trying to win her over everyday because she has short term memory loss but not once did he try to take advantage of her, or use her, he was respectful everytime even after she learned the truth and he continued to work with it, up to even having a kid with her, as a person who lives with someone with short term memory loss this is a very difficult thing to do everyday

I don't think I've ever seen an ugly actress. Sure there are some average looking actresses but essentially all of them are beautiful in their own right. A show that actually did that trope perfectly was Ugly Betty the unflattering clothes and lack of effort in her looks all made sense for her character. Give her glasses, braces, a beautiful older sister, and put her in an environment where looks are the most important thing for four seasons and the gradually beautiful arch makes sense.

16 candles is disgusting. I liked it as a teenager, sure. My grandpa showed it to me when I was like 11, though. But as an adult I understand all the gross things about it. Its crazy that my grandpa didnt tell me hey this part is wrong but he didnt. He showed me a lot pg-13 80s movies all the time but never something so gross. I will never show my kids 16 candles and if I did I would use it as an example of dangerous situations. I dont think anyone should praise that damn film.

Whatever, Love, Actually would hold up. Because people fat shame people today. And it explores all facets of love, not merely romantic love. And Collin's storyline, about him wooing the American girls in the bar was meant to be ridiculous. Also, While You Were Sleeping could probably be pulled off today, too.
As for the rest, I guess? I completely agree with Grease.

While growing up I never saw Breakfast at Tiffanys but everyone around me were praising this movie. I saw it when I was around 25 and I hated this movie for its so called romance. The guy is controlling and forcing his life values on a female character. Ewww.
Racist stereotype part is just horrible too.

I still don't understand what's being labeled the problem with Garden State. I mean, yes, Manic Pixie Dream Girls seem out of this world, but they aren't necessarily always a problem. I didn't hear any other real problems from the movie other than girls don't like seeing perfect cool girls waltz across screens.

MsMojo Could you please clarify for me how Bring It On is a romance movie? I agree with you about how that scene with Jan looking up Courtneys skirt is inappropriate and it definitely would not work today but I cant quite wrap my head around how it fits in to the romance genre. Thank you!

I am not saying that I dont disagree with offensive themes or moments in movies that wouldnt pass today, but this will be happening for the end of time. There will always be moments or themes of movies that will always be offensive and wouldnt pass whether it be past, present or future.

rather scary thing about LOVE ACTUALLY is that Keira Knightley was about 18 at the name, marrying a guy ten years older and being wooded by someone even older. Legal, but asking questions.
50 FIRST DATES has the persistent problem of Adam Sandler with just about anyone

Grease is my long time favorite in that list, and I've watched most of them. I don't have the edge to repeat them as I have for Grease. 19 years of age, and I relate to the relationship. 42 years later and I believe it is just as relevant now as it was back then.

you're joking? teens changing their looks to fit in will never stop. i thought the emo look was a permanent thing for me and while the hair looks cute i don't think i would ever live in the look. or maybe sandy liked the look? it was never stated.

What are they ruining now. LOL. Maybe the World really ISN'T round, and we really CAN 'bumper pad' it! How did anyone raise kids up to this point? We were taught movies are 'pretend' and not to meant to be taken to heart. omg. I miss the 1980's.

I watched the notebook with my mom and sister and they both thought Noah was doing that because he loves her and he wouldn't actually do it. I actually told my mom would you want me to be with a guy who does that or run away screaming

I remember growing up on films with manic pixie dream girl, the one who is always bugging the main guy character. Man did that blow up in my face lol. someone should have told me that only works when you're insanely pretty.

If you expect characters to be perfect people or have perfect behaviors, how would you expect something to work ever? Let stories be, because it is good that movies mirror life (or some interpretations of it, for better or for worst.

The only points I agreed with throughout this entire video are the ones about rape culture, abusive and discriminatory behaviour. Other than that I believe that Msmojo actually missed the storyline (gist) of many of these movies.

There was nothing wrong with the depiction of cheating in Love Actually, it was actually beautifully done, showing cheating is horrible and hurts. I don't understand why was it mentioned next to fat shaming and creepy guy.

Im at a loss trying to figure out why MsMojo thinks While You Were Sleeping is outdated, since its just thrown in there with no explanation. And by the way, its a romantic comedy, so its supposed to be kind of outrageous.

Always annoys me when theyre so quick to point out that Sandy changed for Danny when Danny also changed. He tried to become a jock even though he hated it and wasnt even good at it.

if its a movie set during a specific historical period you cant exactly judge it by todays standards. its meant to be tone deaf bc of how that historical period actually was
