Top 10 YA Adaptations That FLOPPED Okay, I just gotta speak up about Vampire Academy.
During production, the producers were repeatedly told by the fans: dont make this a high school cheesy comedy. We pleaded with them, stay true to the books. Yes, the first book is comparatively light, however the series gets darker and darker (RIP Mason. The fans knew it was going to flop when those god-awful promotional posters came out High School Sucks. REALLY! The PR people saw the backlash and ignored it. There was next to no promotion for it in theatres or online, and then they wondered why it flopped. There were droves of fans that refused to even see it once because of the bad taste those promos left in our mouths. I dont think it was the story, or the casting that made the film a failure. It was the producers cheapening the story into something that was supposed to be a mean girl reboot.
I really hope they do a proper VA in the future, with a bigger budget, better PR team and actually competent writers.\r\n

Also what about the 5th Wave? Thats like my favourite book trilogy and the movie is actually really accurate to the book (except for one very minor difference that really has no impact on anything) and it was an alright film, but since the book is more of a diary style thing it just didnt translate as well into film because we lost all the thought that went into it really, and so lost a lot of its charm. It didnt get a sequel and it flopped pretty hard as far as I know.

I was really disappointed to find Eragon wasnt listed! The novel series was AMAZING! Deep characters, a driving plot, magic and fantasy elements, a forbidden love that is possible at the end! Its fantastic! The movie, however. Great for an introductory course but not great when you just put down its book. Complete bomb. Even the author regretted it, and that says A LOT!

Ella Enchanted was my favorite book and movie as a kid and I LOVE the Divergent series! I don't care if it's incomplete or others simply think it's bad. I like it and I wouldn't change a single thing about it. (Plus the main character dies in the books and at the movies' perspective, she lives a very long and happy rest of her life by the end of the third movie)

You do know that a huge part of why the US is sooo far behind the rest of the west is because of your PC culture? Being politically incorrect can start conversations that lead to people gaining knowledge, whereas a PC conversation only sweeps every issue under the rug. Remember you can only step over so much.

Ella Enchanted flopped because it stripped the heroine of her spunk, intelligence, and agency and turned the whole story into a broken shell of the adventure it once was. It turned her quest to break her curse into a quest to find a husband. It is probably one of the worst book to film adaptations I've ever seen.
reply

Was Eragon so bad that were just never going to mention it again? Cause honestly that was the worst flop and I dont even care how it performed in box office that has got to be the worst book to movie adaption. And thats saying a lot cause I thought Ella Enchanted was pretty bad too but Id at least watch that again

The Ella Enchanted movie stunk! I'm happy it is on here. The book was wonderful. Every character was written well. I still have the book because it is one of my all time favorites. when I say they butchered it. its like all the did was read the description on the back instead of the novel.
reply

Ella Enchanted was the worst. The book is amazing, I've read it dozens of times. A movie that actually stayed true to it would have been wonderful. Instead you have some weird murder plot and Ella somehow defying the laws of physics and basically Hermione's SPEW 2. 0.
reply

I love Ella enchanted, both the movie and the book. While the movie does diverge from the book quite a bit it is so funny and Charming in its own right that the differences don't matter. This was a case of changes to the source material done right!

The only books mentioned on this list that are actually YA and not middle grade are Vampire Academy, The Darkest Minds, and Allegiant. If we are looking at middle grade too, though, then The Golden Compass should be worth a mention.
reply

The Darkest Minds had so much potential in the book but I think a solid few of the elements were taken out and the acting was wooden at best and painful the rest of the time. And what was up with the handprint ending?
reply

I love Ella enchanted as much as you all do but yes, it deserves to be on the list because, as a matter of fact, it flopped upon release. Just because it's on here doesn't mean it's bad and nobody likes it (:

I was really excited to see a wrinkle in time as they showed lots of trailers in germany, but suddenly I heard nothing and I don't think it even aired at my local cinemas. Still haven't seen it: /
reply

Everyone saying Ella Enchanted shouldn't be on this list, this is a list of movies that flopped. Not bad movies. There's a difference. You can flop and still be a good movie.
reply

popularity does not necessarily define how good a movie is. Sometimes it is not popular because yes, the movie was bad, but sometimes it has nothing to do with that at all.
reply

I still enjoyed Allegiant even if it flopped at the box office
I only saw it once but I enjoyed the movie when I saw it
I wanted to see another divergent movie

reply

The Divergent movies we're such a fail; after reading the books I watched the trailers and was utterly confused and disappointed to levels I didn't even know existed
reply

Vampire Academy had books you had to read if you wanted to have anything to talk to the people in my primary school. The books were dope, the movies were poorly made
reply

I still quote Ella Enchanted and my friends and I were obsessed with it when I was a kid. It might not have been as big as Princess Diaries but it is a classic!
reply

I am Number Four was a wreck, The cast was good but the adaptation was horrible theyve changed so much of the details that it pains me to watch the entire movie
reply

The inkheart series was AMAZING. The movie was so disappointing. Same goes for Ella Enchanted. It was my favorite book growing up. The movie was just awful.
reply

Vampire Academy didnt work because it was turned into a comedy. When I first saw the trailer I thought it was going to be a parody film like vampires suck
reply

Thanks for pointing out that these films were unsuccessful at the box office, not bad films. Ella Enchanted and The Indian In The Cupboard are great
reply

How is Percy Jackson not on this list? Those movies were terrible and a serious slap in the face to the characters and the readers alike
reply

I disagree w Ella Enchanted being on this list also the first divergent was decent it couldve made more money but I wouldnt say it flopped
reply

anne hathaway did some great work especially her role in ella enchanted really hope that's on disney plus but other then that leave her alone
reply

Im glad most are opposed to Ella Enchanted being on the list. Especially in comparison to the utter crap that was previously shown.
reply

I didnt know half of these existed. They cant have done a good job of promoting these movies. No wonder they didnt do well.
