Top 10 Feminist Moments in Rom Coms Seriously, if Legally Blonde wasnt number one, people would riot. What is also a good point to mention is that Elle is one of the most feminine characters in Rom coms, being the ink loving, puppy carrying sorority sister. In any other movie, shed either be the popular girl
villain or, if this was an early 2000s cartoon, discard the femininity to succeed. Instead, not only does she organically come to realise what makes her happy, but proves that theres no wrong way of being a woman.
I also like that the horror genre has also gone on a similar tangent like in the Happy Death Day movies where they get a character that would be the first to die in a movie and make it about her learning to be a better person and develop into one of the most beloved horror icons in the last decade.
I am glad that Bend it like Beckham was on here. When I was a kid, it was one of my favourite movies.\r\n

Maybe it was just me, but Eleanor didn't come off as someone who was resentful for all of the obvious reasons at face value, and she seemed like she was regurgitating ideals that were shoved down her throat for years rather than actually believing in them. It seemed like she was simply saving Rachel from a life of heartache, disappointment and stress like her own rather than saving her son from Rachel. Her facial expressions and actions seemed to counteract her words as well as her softer interactions with Nick. She just seemed like a woman who wanted to be Rachel, free of those ties that she was made to believe were all that mattered. She wanted to have the time and love of her family. I couldn't bring myself to really dislike her, but I am glad that Rachel and her came to an understanding. I would love for there to be a Par 2 though, to see what the aftermath was like once things settled.

I actually loved all the women in Crazy Rich Asians. I think Astrid standing up to her now ex husband really put him in his place and was a strong statement. She was married to a man who came from nothing and she felt because she was richer than him, she had to hide her wealth from both gender and racial reasons. After coming to terms with their divorce, she put him in his place after he tried doing the typical divorce practices (giving the woman the home while the man find another place. Instead she finally flexed her strong arm on him and reminded him that she will live in one of her many apartments and that he's not a man.

My Big Fat Greek Wedding is one of the greatest movies ever made, so relatable and heartwarming. Toula mustering the courage to ask her dad for education was a great moment because it led her to becoming happy in life. It's a great message how one decision in life can change everything. But it was done in a respectable way because her adad wasn't a villain just a typical loving Greek dad who was traditional.
Bend it like Beckham also brilliant movie, everyone should watch it at least once in their life.

When Legally Blonde came out, I was in my mid teens. I adored this movie about a young woman that stayed true to herself. I still have the VHS tape. I showed it to my glitter and unicorn loving daughter when she was little. She's now almost 11 and plans to run a large company when she grows up. She plans to wear pink and use her cute smile and bubbly personality to become the boss. But, don't piss her off she will make you regret it(her older sister already is scared of her.

What I love most about Legally Blond is that for the entire movie it's women supporting women. Yes Vivian takes awhile to come around but she realizes that Elle isn't the enemy she is completely on her side. I love movies when women support women.
Also as side note, this does not mean women cannot compete but it means that women do not need to tear each other down to get there.

I didn't like Legally Blonde the first time I watched it, but now it's one of my favorite movies. I love makeup and other girly things, but while getting my engineering degree I felt like I had to repress that side of me. I love seeing a traditionally feminine character who doesn't have to give up what she loves in order to be taken seriously; she lets her work speak for itself.

Don't forget Isn't it romantic! The moment where the main character realizes what she needed the whole time was to love herself, instead of waiting for someone to love her, which gave her the courage to stand up for herself in her workplace and show everyone how talented she was. Such an empowering moment!

I also think Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice is empowering because she doesn't choose Darcy until he truly respects her, in his original proposal his feelings might have been there but everything else wasn't. but when he proposes again he has matured and has become worthy of her

One of my favorite feminist moments is from Crazy Rich Asians, when Astrid tells her cheating husband that the problem with their mariage was not her family's money but rather his cowardliness. It's not my job to make you feel like a man. I can't make you something you're not.

We PLEASE need a PART 2 list. I agree with so many suggestions for additional women: Ever After, First Wives Club, Astrid from Crazy Rich Asians (and Paik Lin, Giselle, and how about Milan, Rapunzel and Merida? Or Wonder Woman? So many great choices!
reply

As much as I love this list I dont think Legally Blonde should be included as I dont consider it a rom com. Emmett and Elle get about fifteen minutes of screen time, their relationship is barely a subplot
reply

1) Danielle rescues herself - Ever After
2) The Whole Movie - Legally Blonde
3) Torrance dumping Aaron - Bring It On
4) When you kiss someone - Never Been Kissed
5) Iris' Speech to Jasper - The Holiday

the Prince and Me, nearly the entire film, but mostly when she turns down being a princess to pursue her longstanding dream of becoming a doctor, and then him coming back and saying he'd support her.

Bridget made the choice to leave her job bc she realized how much of a mess her life was after realizing Daniel was cheating and she wanted a clean break from everything at the old job, including him

For lack of a better word, shrew! for the description of Kat in 10 Things I Hate About You? Ummm. it is a reimagining of Shakespeare's Taming of the Shrew so that is actually the perfect word.

From the start of the video I was thinking about legally blonde. I was thinking if legally blonde is not in the list than what is the point of making this list. happy to see it at #1
reply

Iris' speech to Jasper is one of my favorites, he was an asshole from start to finish and had the nerve to try and make her have an affair with him. So so proud of her triumph shout
reply

You should branch out of your comfort zone and watch other movies. I suggest The Best Man and Deliver Us From Eva as just a couple examples of strong women standing up in a Rom Com.
reply

Waiting to Exhale's Bernadette (played by Angela Bassett) snapping and realizing all the ways she's been used and abused by her husband and torching his belongings.
reply

Why ain't Love and Basketball on here? Beauty Shop? How Stella Got her Groove Back? Dreamgirls? Oh nvm, I know why, there's black folks as main leads in them.

Also, that scene from 'Hidden Figures' when Taraji P Henson's character has had it with her boss. She brilliantly defended both her gender and her race.

I really like these videos but I wish the creators exposed themselves to a larger pool of media. Or are these videos tailored to the audience?

reply

Number two should be Astrid from Crazy Rich Asians. But it didn't even make it through the honorable mention: (

I LOVED Legally Blonde, which is funny because when I first saw the character I didn't think I would like her.
