The 1990 film wins hands down.
I love Anne Hathaway but her GHW was over acted, manic and lacked subtlety. Angelica Houston delivered a memorable and terrifying performance that scared me silly as a kid because she projected that persona in such a way that was believable, scary and brilliantly and charismatically twisted.
Hathaways accent was torture. It was so confusing and not consistent. Angelica Houston on the other hand had a great accent that was a bit more Belgium since it was Germanic with slight French undertones here and there. But it was always consistent.
But the worst part was Chris Rock.
I loved the new updated take of setting it in America and I adore Octavia Spencer shes brilliant but Chris Rocks narration during the movie was not just unnecessary it was obnoxious. The man has a voice like gravel in a wood chipper and it annoyed the hell out of me.
Regardless of the limitations of special effects for the mice they made it much more charming than the cgi mice which also took me out of the fantasy. 1990 film is still the best.

I'm literally shocked, just finished watching remake and realised how cheesy and poor it is. Oh God, I barely can find a words to describe my dissapointment. Just compare two stories in the beginning in the original movie girl in the painting was really dark and terrifying, it give me chills even nowadays, and set the mood that witches are really really dangerous, and look below at that chicken shit, is that Goddamn comedy right here? Seriously? And the ending in remake in horrible, yes I know in the book was sad ending, but after watching such kind of movies I want relaxation and heartwarming feeling in the end, and I prefer to show my kids only original movie, to give them hope and will to motivate them to live and do better things. Bad ending just don't fit in here. So you can see guys, modern remakes are huge dissapointment in general, what the hell is wrong with Hollywood? Maybe stop raping our childhood memories and how about creating something new, unique?

I haven't seen the remake and will always have a soft spot for the original (and the book) but from the clips I've seen, Anne Hathaway's performance is a bit too big for me, if there's such a thing. I felt like I was watching an actress having a blast acting a part instead of living and breathing it. I think she also has a natural sweetness that she was trying to play against for the performance, but that's on casting, not her. Angelica Houston definitely for the win IMHO. Happy Halloween everyone!

The original movie is one of very few movies that have a 100% Rotten Tomatoes rating. The remake also flopped lol. The original movie didn't do well in America because they're not big fans of REAL horror movies over there none of dario argento's movies were very successful in America because they were considered too scary, But in Europe just like the witches the where successful. America gave us Child play and Scream hahaha Lame or what

You chose right. 1990 was the better movie. In fairness, I DID like Octavia Spencer as the grandma a bit better than the original. But she's the ONLY plus about the 2020 version.
And if you're worrying about Roald Dahl's opinion counting, he wrote a short story called The Land Lady, who poisoned her guests (she ran a rooming house) and did Taxidermy on them. This was something Mr. Dahl found funny. The guy was warped.

There's no comparison. The 1990s version was a classic and a billion times better than the 2020 remake. The Witches 1990 was an amazing movie and didn't need a remake. The original holds up to this day. I wish Hollywood would stop with all the remakes because nine times out of ten a remake is just made to profit off nostalgia. It's rare when a remake is even half as good as the original movie.

The thing about Anjelica is that she's naturally striking in a pierce your soul kind of way and naturally elegant. They also give her an extremely grotesque true form. They didn't push conventionally pretty Anne Hathaway's look far enough. Another thing she couldn't help is Anjelica Houston dwarfs everyone in the room, including most of the men, so to a child she also would seem like a giant.

Loved the old movie, it scared the shit out of me as a kid, lol! Angelica Houston did so amazing! And omg, I LOVED hearing Mr. Bean talk! LOVED him so much back in the day! And i am definitely gonna check out the new one, just because it's based in Alabama and I am a fan of Anne Hathaway and Stanley Tucci!

hated that chris rock was narrating the whole time in the 2020 one. it was as if the people who made this movie had no faith in us as an audience, and had to explain every obvious thing going on. lot of filler in the 2020 one too and the main boy suddenly became a mary sue as a mouse
reply

the original was way better. and was more focused on being a good movie the new one just has to throw a bunch of blacks in it. race swap everyone and they think that makes it better. lol. Hollywood is a joke. and can't make any new ideas

Casting directors will direct auditions for a film director and producers to narrow down. The Director and the producer make the final choice. You name the casting directors for each film as if they were the ones to make the final choice.

When is Hollywood and everyone else going to STOP remaking movies/shows! Please tell me that someone out there has an imagination!
My grandmother took me to see the 1990 movie when I was 9 and it was AWESOME!

Loved the 1990 original. The actors were superior. Anjelica and Mai Zetterling embodied those roles with such strength and charisma. The remake actors didnt have that.
reply

I loved the 1990 one so much I stuck it in my thesis. I typically disagree with the authors. Stephen King hated the Shining but I thought it was a masterpiece.
reply

Even thought, Roald Dahl. Does like the Ending of the 1990's film version. I don't what he think's,
It's still make's me Happy in the end. I love, Ms. Irvine.

The 2020 version was horrible. It was not true to the story and Anne Hathaway did not have a patch on Anjelica Huston. 1990 version 10/10. 2020 version 2/10.
reply

I wouldn't have gave it a point to the 2020 movie for the mice because they look like some crap out of a video game that should have gone to the 1990s movie.
reply

Ronald Dahl liked the B. F. G voiced by David Jason though. So much so its reported that the elderly Author gave the cartoon/movie a standing novation.
reply

I liked the 1990 version better. The older version seems to convey the spirit and atmosphere of the book more effectively, at least from my perspective.
reply

I watched the 1990 one and I think it is pretty good and I am going to watch the 2020 version soon! And honestly I like the 1990.
reply

One thing I hate about the new grand high witch Is there's nothing really that distinguishes her from the rest of the witches
reply

There is no competition. The Witches 1990 hands down, with two hands tied behind their back and with their eyes shut
reply

Totally agree. and I give an extra point for Angelic Houston's amazing dress! I still want it even to this day.
reply

I think it is wrong to compare Anne and Anjelica-especially watching the witches reveal, Anne just nails it
reply

Of course the 1990 version would win easily because if you didn't have a first film you wouldn't have any
reply

the 1990 film well deserves this win. Sometimes natural is better than processed and computerised work
