I like your number one pick. It was a great kiss in a very good movie; way better, I think, than the original Princess Diaries. But you missed my favorite unexpected movie kiss of all time. There are some good ones on your list, but mine isn't there. In Murphy's Romance (1985, Sally Field plays Emma Moriarity, a woman in her early 30s, recently divorced and caring for her preteen son. She moves onto a dilapidated ranch outside a very small town, looking to board horses and make a new start. James Garner plays Murphy Jones, widower and town pharmacist. He had all but given up on life when his wife died, but was starting to get his shit back together when they meet. There is a substantial age gap, but they start as friends. Well, at first he is more of a father figure than a friend, but their relationship blossoms over the course of the film. It's only at the very last that he kisses her clueless mouth and throws her out of his store. She stands there with a WTH look on her face while the audience in the theater cheers. Loudly! It's a favorite movie for my wife and I, even though she doesn't care for romantic movies. I do, and this is one of the best.

Theres a lot missing and some even better choices!
Like:
1) Monster ball > Halle Berry and Billy Bob (hes prejudice and shes black)
2) The jungle cruise > Emily Blunt and Dwayne Johnson (they show no interest during most of this movie)
3) Out of Sight > Jlo and George Clooney (shes a cop hes a criminal)
4) Wicker Park > Matt and Alex (He already knew Alex was faking being Lisa and still they kiss)
5) Silver lining playbook > Pat and Tiffany (throughout 99% of the movie Pat tries so hard to get back with his cheating wife)
6) Twilight Saga: Eclipse > Bella and Jacob ( in every movie Bella claims that Edward is her true love and then unexpectedly she ask Jacob to kiss her)
7) Taking Lives > Angelina Jolie and Ethan Hawke (shes a cop hes supposedly a victim the case is over and they part their separate ways. Afterwards and unexpectedly he appears at her door in her hotel room)

Emily Blunt improved that kiss to Tom Cruise in Edge Of Tomorrow. There was literally only one take of this spontaneity and it wound up in the movie. The director never ended to use it, but it a spontaneous moment of his own in the editing bay, he threw it in as an experiment and realized that was what the scene was missing. I always like to watch Tom's face in that moment because he doesn't know it's coming. Good instincts on Emily Blunt. It really works his she does it as the character. It's so forceful and she tears herself away just as abrupt.

Better to do a Most Unexpected Kisses in tv series. That's where I usually find myself thinking well I didn't see THAT coming!
As many others have commented, in a romance movie the inevitable kiss is expected.
I agree with the person who posted the Moonstruck kiss. That should've been no. 1 - if you don't know what it's about going in (which I didn't my first time) then it's a bit of a moment (well the whole scene really. I won't post any spoilers - just watch it)

my favorite kiss of all is between Four and Tris in Divergent. it wasn't supposed to happen but Theo said the timing was right and they just rolled with it. they are also my favorite onscreen couple of all time. I also loved the Jurassic World kiss between Owen and Claire!

Disney movies shouldn't be considered even as honorable mentions. The fairytale tropes are so prominent in their (classic) movies that like any prominent male and female characters are love interests. It's more surprising when there's no romance at all.
reply

I've seen some of these movies and will say that some of them definitely surprised me but ended up being great such as rey and kylo ren & amy and lorie! I actually really didnt like amy and lorie because I wanted him with the main sister

It is hard to fully capture the shock of the kiss in Deathtrap. Two leading men suddenly kissing. in the 1980's? I'm sure some people walked out at that very moment. It was earthshattering and blows away all the others presented here.

Regarding Hans and Leia: in a deleted scene Hans ends the kiss and Leia says Ok hotshot and kisses him again. Thats why their arms are around each other in the final shot. I wish they would had included this in the final version!

I literally married my first husband because he looked like Harrison Ford. Yup I'm shallow. I also do not get why anyone was shocked that Carrie Fisher slept with Harrison Ford. If he's single send him to my house!
reply

Do you really think that kisses between the 2 romantic leads in a movie are that unexpected? Most of this list is ridiculousyou know going in to any movie with romance, that the ingenues will kiss.
reply

His true feelings are irrelevant - if he doesn't step up to the plate to help the woman he loves, he's just an overgrown child fantasizes about what he wants - while not attending to what she needs.
reply

I have an unusual one Id add to the list, the boy who kisses the governess in The Innocents. The nature of the kiss is a bit too mature for his age and seems to imply that he is indeed possessed.

Cher and Josh are NOT related! Why are people STILL talking about this! Nearly 30 years (yikes im dating myself) later and it's still gross? It wasnt gross then and it still isn't.

I never thought that the kiss in Lost in Translation was one of passion. But rather of kindredness and unexpected connection. Not passionate love, but love nonetheless.
reply

Gray & Fritz from Catch & release is by far the Hottest Kiss of them all. Its so very passionate and had dreams about it! Cher & Josh from Clueless come s 2nd
reply

How the crap are you only gonna have Penelope & Johnny as an honorable mention! That has got to be one of the best kisses in cinematic history!
reply

reply

Mia and Nicholas' kiss is so iconic, I remember being shocked when they first locked lips, especially since they were fighting seconds earlier!
reply

I saw Han and Leia coming from the first movie. Bickering to hide attraction is so common it's a trope. How did you NOT see that coming?
reply

while the listed are great kisses, the majority of them are from romance movies. where the kiss are implied and not unexpected at all.
reply

The catch and release kiss will go down in history as one of my top 5! & we all fell in love with Paul Rudd in Clueless!
reply
