The problem for the most part is NOT that the parent's actors/actresses are too young. The problem is that the kid's ones are too old.
This goes especially for teen movies/shows and [again: ] especially US ones. In some cases it is initially understandable to cast someone older, considering the content (or rather what the character has to do. But casting someone in his/her mid to late twenties (or even older) can't even be justified by that.
But the rest! If you have a comedy or even a drama (if the teen/kid himself/herself doesn't have scenes that would be problematic to do for someone age appropriate, why not cast an actor/actress within the characters age range (+- a year or two!
And if the movie/show doesn't span a lot of years or even decades (without switching the cast throughout): Why not cast someone with the proper age for the parent's part!
And the combination of these two factors are causing the issue.
BUT: Shows and movies that span years or even decades without switching the parent's actor/actress shouldn't count in this. Neither should supernatural or sci-fi shows where age-related story lines (temporal death, becoming immortal (like becoming a vampire, age-changing magic, stasis, technology etc) are included.

On Family Ties Meridith Baxter Birney and Michael Gross are only 14 years older than Michael J Fox.
And Phylicia Rashad who plays Claire is only 10 years older than Sabrina La Bebeuf who played oldest daughter Sondra.

You have to remember that several of these were a choice. Tom Hanks didn't want Sally Field replaced as his Mom in Forrest Gump when Forrest aged into adulthood. The same thing with Drew Barrymore in Riding In Cars With Boys, they wanted to keep the same actress and just change the hair/clothing to indicate maturity. She was 26 playing a woman in her mid-thirties at the end of the movie.

I was waiting for Cher and Meryl Streep the whole time. Cher did look a little bit older mostly in the final dance, the dream sequence, she didnt move that much and it look like she couldnt dance as she used to, obviously, when she was younger. While Meryl Streep still danced with the Dinamonds and with her past self.

Chloe Bennet and Dichen Lachman? Dichen who played Chloe's mother is only 10 years older. If Morgan and Ackles with 12 years age gap were on that list then Chloe and Dichen should be there for sure. They even had the same love interest on two different shows.
