While it probably would never have existed without the movie, I'd argue that Whitney Houston's song at the top of this chart would have been huge whether it had been in the movie or not. So I'm not sure I'd put it on a list of songs that became popular BECAUSE of the movie. I'd argue it became a hit despite being part of a mediocre movie. When I first saw the title of this, Bob Seger's Old Time Rock and Roll would have to be number one on the list. After seeing the video I was reminded of some other songs that maybe could have beat it out, but only making honorable mention? Nope!
reply

I clicked on this video with big hopes because I knew the number one choice was either going to be I Will Always Love You or My Heart Will Go On and those are literally my favorite love songs of all time. In all honesty I couldn't choose between them, they are the only two songs that can without fail make me cry; (with See you again being a close second. But discovering My Heart Will Go On is not even mentioned was a HUGE letdown. Ms. Mojo you did this list dirty.

Majority of the song mentioned are classics! Fun fact about Moon River: the executives of Paramount that made Breakfast At Tiffany's didn't want the song to be in the movie but Audrey Hepburn herself successfully campaigned for it to stay in the movie saying over my dead body. And speaking of The Breakfast Club song, apparently, it is being used by my favorite hockey team the Vancouver Canucks as the goal celebration song.
reply

This is Songs that got popular bc of movies not songs that became popular again bc of a movie so why tf is Bohemian Rhapsody touching this list. Even if Wayne's World was the reason for its early 90s Renaissance it still wouldnt apply to this list (which it wasn't bc unlike Watchmojo anyone with a brain knows it was Mercury's death and his death alone that shot it back up the charts,

I actually remember absolutely loving All Star by Smash Mouth when I was a kid listening to it in the car all the time especially since my family owned the album when I was five going on six and I was seven going on eight when Shrek came out.
I was super excited to hear the song play at the beginning of the movie and was super glad to see it stay with its popularity. Lol

You forgot a 2 sings from Pretty in Pink. 2 songs from St Elmos Fire Madonna s song from Desperately Seeking Susan. Peter Gabriel's In Your Eyes Say Anything Over the rainbow Wizard of Oz Dollys other hit 9 to 5 Christopher Cross Arthur A whole bunch of Christmas songs Ghostbusters song Let the river run and lady in red from and a whole lot so maybe it should have 50 sogs
reply

I was a little shocked they didn't include In Your Eyes from Say Anything. Every time I hear that song now I see Lloyd Dobler holding up that boom box. Or Danger Zone from Top Gun. Or Tye Power of Love by Huey Lewis and the News from Back to the Future. Or the Goonies are Good Enough by Cyndi Lauper. Or my favorite fictional band the Wonders singing That Thing You Do!

I think the song unwritten by Natasha Bedingfield deserves an honorable mention. It was in the movie sisterhood of the traveling pants. That song made her a pop icon. My sisters hated that song when they first heard it in the movie, then it grew on them the more they listened to it. Also, that movie soundtrack features one of Katie Perrys first major record songs.

I think a lot of people are forgetting how much movies influenced popular music. Especially in the 70s & 80s, when there was not a new film released every 5 minutes, movies could make or break a career. We would wait with great anticipation each week, by our radio, to see if a soundtrack made it on to Casey Kasem's top 40 countdown.

Guys, are you sure that the title of the post songs that became popular because of movies is accurate and fair? For example, I think that Whitney Houstons I will always love you will probably be remembered long after the movie Bodyguard. There are more on your list not an expert, but I pretty sure about that
reply

For #1, Everybody prefers Whitney Houston's version the best. But Houston had stated that she loved Dolly's version more than her version because Dolly's version was the song that Houston always listened to growing up and was the first time she had heard a song with such strong, beautiful emotions!
reply

Bright Eyes, Watership Down
The Touch amd Dare, Transformers the Movie
Never Surrender, Kickboxer
Live Like A Warrior, Walking With Dinosaurs
Hooked on A Feeling, Guardians of the Galaxy
Brandy, Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol. 2

I can't believe that Coyote Ugly is left out of this list. That movie made me fall in love with Can't Fight The Moonlight and LeAnn Rimes as an artist. I can't imagine that song would be as popular as it was without that movie.
reply

Personally I think that The Breakfast Club and Don't you forget about me have a very tight bond, in the way that, if you watch the movie pop up the song in your mind and if you heard the song pop ups the movie in your mind too
reply

Contrary to popular opinion, I absolutely love Dolly Partons version of I will always love you, but I completely despise Whitney Houstons version. I think she totally butchered the song, but thats my humble opinion.

All Star played before Sonic when I saw it in theatres with my brothers. I was able to sing along without a hitch until one brother asked how I could keep it all straight.
I looked at him and answered, Shrek.

Thanks, Futurama for letting me know my very new favoutite song I keep playing in my head. don't you forget me. I just love that feel of that song! Now I just have to see the movie yeaahh shame on me! :)
reply

Did yall forget that My Heart Will Go On From Titanic was a big hit? Celine Dion was amazing and still is. I don't know why My Heart Will Go On wasn't on this list. I was excepting it to be #1.
reply

I know a ton of millennials who have never heard of INXS. I play Need You Tonight, and they go: Oh, the 'Coyote Ugly' song. This seems like a GenX list, especially according to the comments.
reply

all star can get groovy sometimes but i will always love you sticks to you forever but celine dion's song love theme from titanic has the same effect you would think
reply

Your number 1 is so wrong. Whitney totally ruined Dolly's beautiful song. She didn't understand the meaning of it & screeched out of her natural range.
reply

Hooked on an feeling from Guardians of the Galaxy. Didn't know that this song existed until I heard it in the movies. I love Moon River, so beautiful
reply

All so good, but The Air That I Breathe by the Hollies in Seeking a Friend for the End of the World is heart wrenching! Its a wonderful combination.
reply

The DISRESPECT to MY HEART WILL GO ON by Celine Dion. The dsirespect to one of the biggest selling single and most successful single in history!
reply

No my heart will go on? That song took on a life of its own after Titanic came out so I think it fits the bill to be on this list.
reply

I saw Oh Yeah as an Honorable Mention, but not Twist and Shout? It hit the Billboard Top 40 after it was featured in Ferris Bueller.
reply

Great list. I will always love you sounds marvelous in both Dolly and Whitney's vocal renditions. Hard to top that classic.
reply
