Yes alot of the actors and actresses are Tony award winners it's like a who's who of Broadway any how the Gilded Age does include some actual characters who did live back then Mrs. Astor was queen of New York with her select 400 parties, Mrs. VANDERBILT was new money but she broke her way into society much like Mrs. Russell is doing and became the queen of the new money crowd and she had a larger ballroom than Mrs. Astor so some old money flocked to her as well Clara Barton was the real founder of the red cross. And much as how Mrs. Russell is suppressing her daughter Mrs. Vanderbilt did the same to Consuela until she was able to catch a coronet from across the pond.

the most important reason is; this is the beginning of the corporate takeover of America, this microcosm of New York City Elites is responsible for all of the problems we are facing today as soveriegn human beings in America. I do really love this show, it is smart and beautiful although a few shades too clean. I am in love with the architecture and the opulance of the set designs. Its almost like being. home in a sense. Not the opulance but the period and the place. Of course, there were far more dark undercurrents to the real people meny of the characters were based on. Quality entertainment.

I'm enthralled. Casting and writing superb, beautifully authentic! Cousin Oscar is a devilish breath of fresh air. Young Gladys Russell looks like a Sargent painting come to life. Hard to single out any one particular aspect in such a lavish feast, but I enjoy the relationship between Peggy and Aunt Agnes. They are well-matched. And wonderful to see Simon Jones (Bridey on Brideshead Revisited) as the Van Rijn's butler.

Of course the comparison to Downton is inevitable, and I think valid. People will be drawn in by the similarities but the show is already showing its going to be dealing with more directly American issues. Its set earlier than Downton, and the New York society is already proving to be more pompous than Downton, if possiblelol

Sorry, not trying to be hater but just being honest. All this but how good is the story line? And, I noticed there aren't any good looking women in the whole darn movie! They could have done much better for actress selection. Dont think I will be tuning in for this one but the idea was great! Swing and a miss!

I am watching it and enjoying it. The metropolitan setting reminds me more of Upstairs Downstairs than it does of Downton Abbey. Upstairs Downstairs also mixed fictional characters with real people. The sense of old money clashing with new is fascinating as is the 1880s New York setting.

I had two reasons to start watching this show - Christine Baranski and Julian Fellowes. I have not been disappointed. The writing is exquisite, Aunt Agnes' one-liners cut like a knife and the costuming and sets are a visual pleasure. Lord Fellowes has done it again.

So this means 3 period drama's (Bridgeton, Sandton and Gentlemen Jack) are premiering in march
In the mean time I'm enjoying the gilded age.
Leave a comment down below if there are any other period drama series or movie that i/we should check out

Definitely like this show, however I find Cynthia Nixon is out of her league. Her acting is just not believable. It is as if she is auditioning poorly for a role in a Jane Austin story. I think she should be replaced with a better actress.

I have had my fill of Hollywood fake history. Rich white people never treated black people like this show is trying to pretend they did. This is the time of Jim crow laws and new York had just as many Jim crow laws as the south did.

The show is OK. Watched the whole season, and look forward to season two. Maybe due to high expectations I am not getting the same vibe as with DA. I do admire Julian Fellowes writing and creativity. Just don't go woke.

This show is horrible. downtown Abbey was 1000 times better. This show has horrible actors, horrible writing and even some of the sets are just phony looking. I'm surprised so many people think this show is so good
reply

Not to say that the show doesnt have its problems like Julian Fellowess Conservative Slant but I love the show: Gay Icons, Period Outfits and BHines of the highest order. Whats not to like?

Let's not forget Brooklyn wasn't apart of whats now known as Newyork it was still the republic of Brooklyn until 1898. Henceforth why Peggy states we are both Newyorkers now ( Manhattan)

The clothes are not authentic. Damask patterns on a dress? People would laugh on her for such humiliation. These patterns are for curtains and bed sheets! Really disappointing.

i am loving this program sooo much! I love how Each character is portrayed. Carrie Cooms is what i want to be when i grow up. And there is no one like Christine Baranski. WOW!
reply

Very much enjoying it. it's partially filmed in Troy, NY, just a few miles from me. fun seeing buildings I've passed countless times. And the costumes are glorious.

Love this show. I was so disappointed that season 2 isn't out yet. Ive rewatched season one twice already. I'll keep watching it until Season 2 comes out!

Carrie Coon as Mrs. Russell should have a Southern Accent (cf. Mrs. Vanderbilt); Fellowes seems to be oblivious to the aftereffects of the American Civil War.

Miss Peggy Scott is my favourite character and the actor playing her is so well written. Also, Im happy to hear that there was a Black writer on the show.
reply

I was initially invested in the show. However, I am frustrated by the dark lighting in some scenes. I am at episode 4 and I am not sure if I will return.

Yes I am watching, I enjoy watching period pieces, and it is the fashion & the architecture for me, would love to go on a tour in some of the old homes

It's refreshing to watch a series with dialogue and people. Always go period for it. They're the lot from The Good Wife and The Good Fight.
reply

Please tell me there is singing during rehearsals/production! Half of Broadway is on this show, and I want the backstage album.
reply

I Love the show! Im so glad they got picked up for a second season. Great acting in addition to the fabulous history of New York City.
reply

I started watching The Gilded Age because actor Michael Cerveris is in it. I really enjoy his acting and the show is great fun!
reply

I didn't think I'd like this show as I couldn't get into Downton Abbey but I'm hooked and in love with this show, it's AMAZING!
reply

I loved that scene where Maryanne's aunt says, Money is not everything and Maryanne responds with Not if you don't have it.
reply

Its terrible compared to downton. The gilded age fell victim to todays diversity and political correctness.
reply

Cynthia Nixon breaks type from Miranda in SATC and is fabulous! Christine Baranski as Aunt Agnes is a gay icon btw
