Top 10 Broadway Songs You Can\'t Sing in Public I have totally sung Big Spender many times in public, its fine. Its noisy with all the shouting, but its fine.
Long ago when I was a teen, I was on a bus in New Orleans with a friend, and we were belting out the soundtrack to Hair. I started on the next song with Im a and my friend clamped her hand on my mouth. I realized with horror that I nearly sang Colored Spade, which is a song listing a bunch of racial insults. I was SO grateful my friend clued in on time to stop me! I cant believe that neither Colored Spade nor Sodomy from Hair are on the list. They are both so much worse than at least half the songs here.\r\n

I remember one time I was at the childrens hospital and I was listening to some random Broadway playlist on Spotify. Keep in mind, I had my headphones on but I had already used up all my skips. All of a sudden, Blue from Heathers comes on. It was very awkward It didnt occur to me that I couldve paused it or turned it down so the sound wouldnt leak through my headphones
(For context, the song is about two characters convincing the main character to give them both a blowjob)

I had never sung aloud show tunes (well a couple of songs from Repo the Genetic Opera - amazing film, brilliant soundtrack)
Actually I did sing Avenue Q's The Internet is for Porn (late evening) people who heard knew it was from Avenue Q.
. BUT I got a lot of weird looks when I sang aloud ideas (to the tune of it's a most wonderful time of the year) It's a most wonderful fresh severed ear

What about the opening chorus in showboat (Kern/Hammerstein 1927) in the context of the musical it's about blacks were forced to work under appalling conditions (and this was in the 1890s after slavery was abolished. But if you sing it in public out of context people will think you're a racist. This is because it uses a certain word beginning with N.

so many starkid and tcb ones that arent gonna be here (not broadway. Theres torture tango, perky's buds, virginity rocks, wiggle, take off your clothes, anything from mamd really and OF COURSE, the ultimate one tat would very much be this vids first place had it been on broadway: not so bad

So many choices you could easily do a second list I'm sure. I immediately thought of Dance 10 Looks 3 from Chorus Line, Class from Chicago, and while it wasn't a Broadway musical. I love When Your Face is Sewn to a Butthole from Human Centipede The Musical.

I remember this one time when I was in a musical, and the cast and I went out to lunch after rehearsal. While we were waiting for a table, one of my cast mates and I sang Dead Girl Walking. She sang as Veronica and I sang as JD. Luckily, nobody heard us.

I have watched many of your Broadway lists. I can't understand why The Drowsey Chaperone is never on it. What an incredible show with an amazing shtick. And Sutton Foster was a joy. Give some love to the Drowsey Chaperone!

That Glee rendition of Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch-a, Touch me was very interesting when I first saw it. Im glad it made it on the list! Its always fun when you know a movie/song/etc when it makes it on a top 10 list!

Thank You SO MUCH, MSMOJO! Thank you for doing this video on Broadway culture! Please Please do more lists/videos on things like Broadway/ other cultural greats outside of popculture.
Thank you!

my immediate thought was Sugar Daddy from Hedwig and the Angry Inch, or most of the soundtrack really, or the entire Book of Mormon soundtrack, although I've already seen that mentioned,
reply

Im surprised Turn It Off from the Book Of Mormon isnt on this list. Especially with the line being gay is bad but lying is worse is one of the most offensive Broadway lines ever
reply

I was very drunk, and I am very gay, but I once had a drunk courage to play Everyones A Little Bit Racist in a bar, full of rednecks and African-Americans from the ghetto
reply

this song was unmentioned, but this song, Not So Bad (from the tin can bros. musical, Spies Are Forever) portrays a pro-nazi person promoting nazism for the whole song.
reply

Solidarity from Billy Elliot should also be on this list quite a few of the lyrics would have to be bleeped out. Also All You Wanna from SIX is fairly suggestive.
reply

If I was at Starbucks and a woman around me was singing dead girl walking my sense of humor would take over and Id say ok lets go just to see how shed react.

I have been caught many times singing Toucha, Toucha, Touch Me in public. More times out in actual public than at a midnight showing of RHPS.
reply

Sodomy from Hair wasnt even an honorable mention? Ugh I grew up watching hair and it wasnt until I was a lot older than I understood the lyrics
reply

I have never been sure why anyone thought that Heathers should even become a musical, but okay, no accounting for taste.
reply

Guess you forgot that us old denizens of the midnight movie have no problem singing ALL the Rocky Horror songs in public, lol!
reply

I work in a kitchen. A Little Priest gets a lot of concerning looks from people if you sing it while prepping food.
reply

Really! No Dance Ten, Looks Three from A Chorus Line
Because Tits and Ass, really changed my life and sure can change yours

reply

What about almost all of little shop of horror. The three songs that come to mind is now/its just the gas, denist, and feed me.
reply

I fell in love with Rent when I was 12 and was gonna say La Vie Boheme but yeah Contact is fair even if it's less catchy
reply

Good list almost all song from avenue q and Heathers you definitely shouldn't sing in public but is super funny and good
reply

I think Dogfight has a couple songs that could have been on the honorable mention list. Especially the titular number.
reply

How in the world is Dance 10 Looks 3 not on here! The whole chorus is Tts! And A&&! MsMojo fell down on this one!
reply

Ha, I sing Totally Fked all the time. I even used lyrics from it as an opener for one of my most recent blogs.
reply

Wheres Everybodys Got The Right from Assassins? Singing that in public will probably get you put on a list.
reply

How did you completely miss Angry Inch from Hedwig and the Angry Inch! Seriously, listen to the lyrics. lol
