A makeup artist can transform even the most iconic actors. For this list, well be looking at the most notable times where elaborate cosmetics took stars and their films to the next level. Lord Voldemort isn't a makeup triumph. the nose was CGI'd. the rest wasn't that impressive compared to some choices you could've made. IF you weren't familiar with the following, check them out.
-Dick Van Dyke as the Senior Mr Dawes in Mary Poppins. His makeup was so convincing you never knew it was him in the makeup that turned him into a 90 year old man until it was revealed in the end credits.
-Peter Weller as Alex Murphy/Robocop in Robocop. The scene where the cyborg removes his upper helmet is amazing revealing the back half of his head is all machine. and done completely practical makeup effect and completely believable.
-Robert Englund as Freddy Kreuger in A Nightmare on Elm Street. A dream demon with a horribly burned face so bad parts of his skull are visible in it. and a nightmare makeup application process too. Kudos to Robert for doing it so many times.
-David Naughton as David Kessler in An American Werewolf in London. The transformation scene required several makeup stages to show the helpless man becoming a werewolf. They were all practical makeup effects and shockingly realistic. Rick Baker got his well deserved first Oscar for this film.
-Borris Karloff as the Creature in Frankenstein. Gotta go with a classic too. His makeup was groundbreaking and grueling to apply for 1931 and it set the standard and has stood the test of time.

My opinion on list
10. Agree even for a film that's almost 30 years old(in 2023)it still holds up.
9. Yeah you wouldn't take her to be in there.
8. I had no idea it was him, he looked like Stanley Tucci under the makeup.
7. Really unrecognisable. Haven't even seen this nor its sequel. I seen the Tim Curry one(bits of it.
6. She was so unrecognisable compare to Jennifer Lawrence
5. No idea it was him as the devil.
4. Have yet to watch this movie. Never got to see the remake either (2000 or 2011. remake)
3. Everytime I see him in Maid Manhattan I start laughing hysterically as I picture him as Voldermort everytime.
2. Yeah it was a really good transformation. Funny hearing Jim Carrey sounding like Sean Connery. I read that he made the makeup artist who did the makeup for Charlize Theron in Bombshell cry as he lost it.
1. I thought it would be her charcther in Bombshell.
Darkman had good special makeup effects too. I'm pissed Colin Farrell only got a honorable mention.

Okay half good list but how could you not name Doug Jones! He is one of the most famous makeup transformation actors ever. He has been;
Abe Sapien Hellboy
The Amphibian Man Shape of Water
Billy from Hocus Pocus
Fauno Pan's Labyrinth
To name a few you had better a a hole list just for Doug Jones to make up for this disrespect, he has sat in a makeup chair for up to 10 hours for a role.

reply

#8 too bad it couldn't disguise his lack of acting ability
What about Danny Devito as the Penguin?
Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie
Johnny Knoxville in Jackass bad Grandpa
Any actor who played the Joker
Jacob Tremblay in Wonder
Christian Bale as Dick Cheney
?

reply

Ummm what about Marlon & Shawn Wayans in White Chicks or Mike Myers as The Cat In The Hat or Eddie Murphy in Norbit or in The Nutty Professor movies or anyone from The Wizard of Oz or The Wiz or The Suicide Squad movies? Like really these r some of the best movie makeup looks.
reply

- Doug Jones definitely deserved a spot in this list for his role as the Asset in The Shape of Water.
- Ron Peralman is also a phenomenal actor that began building his career by doing creature characters & undergoing extensive makeup to play the part.

reply

Mrs Doubtfire=Robin Williams
The Grinch=Jim Carrey
The Penguin from Batman(2022)=Colin Farrell
The Nutty Professor=Eddie Murphy.
The Old Hag from Enchanted =Susan Sarandon
Megan Kelly from Bombshell=Charlize Theron

reply

What about Collin Ferrell (believe that's his name) in The Batman played as Penguin? I didn't even know that was him! Even when I watched the movie again I still couldn't believe that was him! Such an amazing job.
reply

How the hell do you mess up a list by putting some cg crap on this list. When people literally had to sit for hours in a chair. This list is broken as most are recently that you put out and your number 1 is garbage
reply

What about Lon Chaney Sr?
He wasnt called the Man Of A Thousand Faces for nothing.
Or Olga Baclanovas makeup transformation as Cleopatra when she becomes the Human Duck in Freaks (1932)

reply

There are so many great ones that shouldve been on this list. Eddie Murphy in the Nutty Professor, Mike Myers in Austin Powers (Dr. Evil and Fat Bastard, Danny DeVito in Batman Returns, and so many.
reply

Speaking of Bill Skarsgard, if Warner Bros Discovery ever chose to give a hard fresh reboot to the DCEU they could always recast Leto with him. Cause if Joaquin Phoenix can why can't Bill himself?
reply

Michael Rooker as Yondu or the host slug in Slither
The makeup effects in The Evil Dead
Michael Clarke Duncan and Tim Roth in Planet of the Apes
Jonathan Breck in Jeepers Creepers

reply

How about Lon Chaney in Phantom of the Opera (1925, Fredrich March in Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde (1931) and Boris Karloff in Frankenstein (1931? This actually should have been a top 20 list.
reply

No, MsMojo, I do not agree with your list.
You're telling me Voldemort and Charlize Theron's makeup in Monster are better than Jeff Goldblum's Brundlefly makeup from The Fly (1986?

reply

Jim Carrey's performance as the Grinch is definitely one of his greatest roles at least in my opinion, i mean the way his acting brought the character to life is just fantastic!
reply

The number 6 Im just mind blown and her flexibility and then the make up
my list based on the video
Beauty and the beast 1987
The grinch
X-Men
Mrs. Doubtfire

reply

I love some other changes two. What about Davey Jones for pirates? But that's probably almost al computer. And Mason in Hanibal. That one was so scary.
reply

Mad props to all these actors transforming into their roles because we should know that it is not easy to act while wearing makeup from head to toe.
reply

very very great epic list I like it a lot very great job mis mojo one of my absolute favorite list ever you should do a part 2 of this great video
reply

Nooooooooooooooooooooooooooo
Kidding
Jim Carrey is an actor that is in some movies that are sad and scary
Jim Carey plays the grinch.

reply

The movie was terrible but Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse in X-Men Apocalypse was just next level, if you didn't know it was him, he was unrecognisable
reply

Ron Perlman was also transformed as Vincent in Beauty & The Beast (TV Series)
Kane Hodder was unrecognizable as Victor Crowley in Hatchet.

reply

Grinch director Ron Howard decided to wear the Grinch make up for an entire day just to see how it feels. And it really cheered everyone up.
reply

I'm very surprised Robert Downey Jr. in Tropic Thunder wasn't on this list. When I saw the movie I was shocked to learn it was him in makeup.
reply

Ralph Fiennes had also another make-up that made him unrecognizable. It was in The English Patient in which his character is badly burned.
reply

Heath Ledger wasn't also very unrecognizable as The Joker in The Dark Knight, in addition to the makeup he also changed his voice.
reply

I can't believe The Wizard of Oz isn't on this list, not just for the makeups brilliance, but for the time this movie was filmed in.
