Top 10 Songs You Should NEVER Play At Your Wedding For reasons (and not what you think, our wedding was thrown together in 3 days. Our reception was held at a friends house. My friend asked if we were going to have a first dance. I hadnt brought any music, so I looked through my friends music collection. Her tastes & mine were quite different, but I found I Honestly Love You be Olivia Newton-John. Now, I knew the song in general but never REALLY paid attention to the lyrics. We put the song on, my husband & I were dancing. when I actually listened to the last verse: If wed both been born in another place and time/this moment might be ending with a kiss/but there you are with yours and here I am with mine/So I guess well just be leaving it at this. OOPS! For the record, were going to be celebrating our 37th anniversary in September.\r\n

My sister and her husband chose, Unchained Melody (1965) by The Righteous Brothers for their first dance back in 1991. ('Ghost' came out the year before, so I'm pretty sure that's where they got their inspiration)
And then there's me: The smart-ass / asshole 10 year old that I was telling her, You guys should choose, You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling (1965) instead! And yes: I knew damn well what the lyrics meant! (I loved, and still love the music of that era)
Turns out I knew what I was talking about. They ended up in a pretty heated divorce around the time I got married 20 years later. They were our maid-of-honor & best man. AWKWARD!

One you missed, Possession by Sarah Mclachlan. The back story of the song is that she had a stalker who would write her letters. The guy did go to prison. So, she took some of his letters and put his words into her songs. At some point, her stalker guy did go to prison. When he heard her songs, he sued her for copyright infringement. But, before the case could go through, he killed himself in prison.

The bride and groom's first dance for one of my closest friends was Sometimes When We Touch by Dan Hill. The lyrics detail wild mood swings and potential for violence; realistic to their relationship, yet I still bristled at the idea that they would illustrate it publicly. That said, I'm sure I wasn't the only one who knew how appropriate and yet awkward it was.

Yes, if you didn't mention the # 1 song I would have mentioned it I call that the Stalkers Anthum. I want to mention 2 more songs that I've heard at a wedding The Scientist by cold play, that's clearly about a regretful break up and Stealing Love by Carlene Davis (Reggea) I called this song the other woman's Anthum very inappropriate song to play at a wedding.

Some Sick Dream by Seraphim Shock
While I find it incredibly romantic, it's a bit. uh. well take a listen and you'll see what I mean.
Also, Stuck with You by Voltaire ft. Amanda Palmer.
Although I would totally play both of these if I ever did get married. Also, probably The Masochism Tango. But then, I'm a little weird like that.

When I first heard Every Breath You Take, I did think it was romantic. Then the soap opera All My Children used it in a stalker plot line and then I couldnt unhear the stalker implications in the song. They did this when the song first came out so they either knew or at least guessed at the real meaning of the song.

I really do wish more people would understand that about Iris it honestly has a different meaning than most people know if they haven't seen city of angels. I always kinda grit my teeth when my friends choose Iris without knowing haha: ) but its they're day so I just leave it

At a cousins wedding, her new husband danced with his mum to Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton. it was very creepy.
At a different cousins wedding, they played the Game of Thrones theme song. a bunch of us started looking around wondering if we were about to die.

I cant with some of these comments I think this list is more songs you shouldnt play at your wedding (more their first dance) because people think theyre romantic but theyre not. not songs that the DJ play later on while everyone is dancing, they dont matter
reply

Surely the option for u2 should be: but i stillhaven't found what I'm looking for! I fetvthe feeling this listbwas specifically for songs which jad a different tone in meaning to sound, rather than just a bsd choice. Like iris is a percect song for v day

At a wedding - talking to band leader who told me he played Monster Mash at a Halloween nuptials. Cool. Then SECONDS later they began playing Lady is a Tramp Oops. To this day almost no one believes I had nothing to do with that coincidence
reply

Humm.
I'm in my 50's and probably NOT going to be married, but if I was, the song I might pick would be Moonlight Dentsu from Sailor Moon. It might not actually be appropriate considering it is about a teenage girl longing for her crush.

I can't believe anyone would consider White Wedding as their first dance song, but. then I've met people. I used to bartend and hear a lot of choices. I never week forget the couple that chose You don't bring me flowers anymore for their song.
reply

A bit late to the party but Rude by MAGIC! I mean if you wanna send a message that you don't care what your wife's family thinks then it's kinda a funny way to say bug off but otherwise, might wanna steer clear of the future family drama.

Return to Sender Elvis Presly
Me and Mrs. Jones Billy Paul
Take a Letter Maria R. B. Greaves
Dim Lights, Thick Smoke Flatt and Scruggs
D-I-V-O-R-C-E Tammy Wynet
I Don't Wanna Play House Tammy Wynet
Smoky Places The Corsairs

Well, most of the weddings I'll ever go to were pre-internet. So maybe the meaning of the songs escaped the brides, but I swear all of them played White Wedding and Every Breath You Take.
I honestly don't know what they were thinking.

reply

Every Breath You Take may actually BE appropriate for a wedding. You are reminding your new spouse not to cheat and break their vows -- or else there will be consequences. It's sort of a threat that can be used to keep them together.

I go back and forth about The Script song The Man Whom Would Not Be Moved. Is that a loving song or is the man just crazy? I would love to know what other people think about that song, and would it be a good fit for a wedding?
reply

Iris by goo goo dolls and your beautiful is my favorite since they sound so pretty and unique but I wldnt share it with my partner or my someday fiancee at a wedding if I get married since I now knew the meaning behind it.

Obsession by Animotion. Some serious creepy stalker vibes.
I will have you
Yes, I will have you
I will find a way and I will have you
Like a butterfly
A wild butterfly
I will collect you and capture you

Two lines come to mind
We hardly need to use our ears, our music changes through the years AND video killed the radio start
People see wedding in a video and assume it's a wedding song.
READ THE LYRICS PEOPLE

The worst song I heard at a wedding was good 4 u by Olivia Rodrigo.
A bunch of single women were jamming out and so was the DJ. I was just staring in confusion wondering who hurt these poor people on the dance floor

At a cousin's wedding the groom danced with his mother to Garth Brooks The Dance. It was so inappropriate. I love the song, but it is clearly about a break up and that he was dancing with his mother just made it worse.

When somebody mentions one of this songs as romantic I immediately lose respect for that person I mean, obviously they don't get to understand simple lyrics so I seriously start doubting their intelligence.
reply

I was at a wedding for one of my friends and the DJ ended the wedding with somebody I used to know by Gotye because the song was popular during that time. Kind of terrible wishes for the new couple lol.
reply

Iris, Good Riddance (Time of Your Life, and I Write Sins Not Tragedies are some of my favourite songs. I dont want to get married but if I did those three are on the playlist, full stop.
reply

You won't believe how many people play Maxwell's cover This Woman's Work at weddings, even though it's about a woman dying in childbirth. All thanks to the movie Love & Basketball
reply

Now I know why Every Breath You Take was chosen for the end of Stranger Things 2 with the Mind Flayer stalking the kids at the middle school dance from the Upside Down.
reply

Ill still play my heart and go on at my wedding because its from my favorite movie and yes people laugh at my wedding because they know me so well they will not cry
