Oh Hadestown, my beloved, no entracte, no rising of the curtains, just the cast and the band silently entering onstage to their places as Hermes ques for the show to begin. Vibe checking the cast and then the auidience with a simple Aight and then insert trombone solo. Road to Hell is one of my favorites, it uses a call and response to keep the song moving and is led by Hermes who acts as the narrator (he is the messenger god) introducing the gods and men of the story, and dropping some absolute foreshadowing bombs it's a sad song, it's a sad tale, it's a tragedy, it's a sad song but we'll sing it anyway. After all characters are introduced (and might I add Hermes introduces the ensemble as well as the musicians) the main melody crescendos until the song ends with the whole ensemble sustaining their notes along with the band as long as Hermes dictates. It's honestly one of the most catchy and upbeat songs of Hadestown that becomes a BOOK-END as the Road to hell reprise is literally word for word the first song, but instead of being upbeat and hopeful it is now slowed and mournful. my goodness I love Hadestown

Comedy Tonight _A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum_
The song was a last-minute fix by Jerome Robbins (who also created _Fiddler on the Roofs_ Tradition) when the pre-New York tryout in Washington, DC, was not going well. After spending a weekend at the piano, Stephen Sondheim came up with Comedy Tonightthe number was funny, told the audience _exactly_ what to expect, and made the show work. (The show was also Stephen Sondheims Broadway debut writing music as well as lyrics)

The fact that Mysterious Ways from the Color Purple isnt included, and Good Morning Baltimore is, is a crime. While lively, I dont think theres anything particularly special about Hairsprays opening number. The best parts of that show are yet to come.
And Phantoms Prologue/Overture should be on this list too. Top 3 easy. Circle of Life should be top 3 too.

Yay Come From Away! And A Chorus Line! The Book of Mormon! And Hamilton, of coursethats a no-brainer. They are also in my top 10. I wouldve put them in a different order. But this is the first time Ive agreed with MsMojo.
List two should have Into the Woods and Urinetown and all of your honorable mentions.

Howsabout 'There Will Be Sun' from Groundhog Day? It's a very nice and warm song on its own, but it's also setting up the first of many recurring musical motifs in the show. When the song reprises at the end of 'One Day', it's a kick to the gut. If you haven't given that show a chance, do give it a listen!

Carrying The Banner from Newsies(the broadway musical) is very underrated. It really sets the tone of the show, explains whats going on in one song, showcases most of the characters, has brilliant lyrics, had great choreography, and basically just everything about it is perfect.

How did Phantom not end up on this list? As soon as the Overture begins and the chandelier springs to life as the stage starts to transform back into the late 1800s, it instantly grabs your attention, especially once the chandelier starts to rise up to its original glory
reply

Ragtime literally immediately throws the entirety of turn-of-the-20th century New York directly into your face in a legendarily/notoriously large and sprawling shock immersion of a number that lasts almost ten minutes and it doesn't even get an honorable mention?

Welcome to the Rock should be higher on the list. It's a great intro to the situation, characters, and ESPECIALLY location.
Welcome to the land where the winters tried to kill us, and we said, 'We will not be killed! ' That section hits HARD.

I always LOVED the lion king as a kid. When i eventually saw the stage production several years back in Cleveland I started crying the moment I heard that first opening note. The chills never stopped. So freaking amazing.

Circle of Life is by far my favorite opening. Some lesser known shows that have great openings (in my opinion) are Urinetown and Aida. I also agree with many other comments about Phantom, Ragtime, and Into the Woods.

Fiddler needs to be recognized more often. It was such a good musical and every part of it sells what it's about. If I were a rich man is my anthem and will always make me dance like an idiot

Uh, what about
Phantom of the Opera
Les Miserables
The Sound of Music
I mean. there are so many other openings that should be on the list instead of a lot of these

reply

Omigod you guys totally shouldve been on the list! I feel like the fact they were poking fun at themselves and its just so damn catchy made it an instant classic opening
reply

Welcome To The Moulin Rouge! from Moulin Rouge definitely deserves to be on the list. It's really fun, catchy and the and the staging is a whirlwind of colors and dance.
reply

POTO should've been added to this list. The rising of the chandelier and the sound of the hunting music bring the story to live gives me chilli's every time I hear it.
reply

It's quite suspicious that all their picks have videos to accompany them. There are probably 100 better choices than most of their picks that were just never filmed.
reply

One of my favourites is Heaven on their Minds from JCS. Something about that bass riff appeals to me. And I can't believe The Sound of Music isn't on here.
reply

I'm just glad that all of my favorites are listed. Many of them became favorites precisely because the opening number grabbed me and sucked me in.
reply

Its not exactly a song so I understand why it wasnt mentioned, but rock island from music man is so unique & I feel like its often overlooked
reply

Kind of shocked that the Prologue from Into the Woods wasnt on here, its my personal favorite! Definitely one to consider if you do a part two!
reply

I literally just watch those videos to see Hamilton Been there one week ago in Hamburg (Germany) and now I am more obsessed than ever!
reply

PIPPIN's Magic to Do should not have been an honorable mention. & Intermission Song from A STRANGE LOOP is a great opening number
reply

How about Cotton Blossom from Showboat? I know that the show is now politically incorrect but still performed, occasionally.
reply

Nothing sets a mood better for a show from the start than Comedy Tonight from A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum.
reply

The fact that Sarafina! Was excluded is a utter travesty! Oh my God! The harmonies and emotion in the vocals are unmatched.
reply

I have never wept during a musical, much less watching it live, but I did for Lion King! The majestic was beyond the pale!
