reply

does no-one except Hollywood make teen movies?
apart from LDC doing disabled, none of these got Oscar nominations, except for Ellen Page (Canadian) and Saiorse Ronan (Irish.
Reese Witherspoon would also deserve a nod for FREEWAY
Kieran Culkin in THE MIGHTY (even if he is doing disabled)

No mention that Juno & the actress who played her were both female at the time. She wasn't Elliot then, she hadn't even chosen that name then & didn't identify as male until well over a decade later. The teen girl protagonist certainly wasn't played by a male or trans actor.

I just don't understand why the list was almost completely white.
Ariyan A. Johnson's performance in Just Another Girl on the I. R. T. is just one of countless powerful teen performances in non-white coming of age films. Love ya'll, but please do better.

reply

Reese Witherspoon is ranked WAAAY too low. Tracy Flick is iconic and that is entirely due to Reese. Reese also gave a brilliant performance in the criminally underrated Freeway. I'd also add Cuba Gooding, Jr in Boyz in the Hood.
reply

Great list. For me Reese Witherspoon in Election gives an Oscar Nomination worthy performance. Its insane she wasnt nominated (she could have even win. Also, where is Carrey Mulligan in An Education? That performance was grand.
reply

Great picks, but how could you not even mention Heather Matarazzo from Welcome to the Dollhouse or Mandy Moore from Saved? Good to see Winona Ryder got a mention from Heathers, one of the best teen movies ever!
reply

what about Tom Cruise on risky business, Zac Efron on 17 again, Mark Wahlberg on fear, Tom Holland on the impossible, Lindsay Lohan on freaky friday or confessions of a drama queen, Rachel McAdams on mean girls?
reply

Elsie Fisher's performance in Eighth Grade was really excellent, especially given her young age. The film was so realistic, and I could easily relate to her character Kayla, and the troubles she was facing.
reply

Cuba Goldings portrayal of a young man growing up in south central LA and dealing with racism police brutality alongside first love was fantastic and ground breaking. Boyz in the Hood classic
reply

I would have expanded the list to include Mandy Moore in How to Deal and Kristen Stewart in Speak. Matt Dillon is also pretty iconic in both The Outsiders and Little Darlings.
reply

I totally agree! Loved Ladybird, and I've worked with handicapped children and adults for 40 years. Johnny Depp and Leonardo's performances (not to mention Juliet Lewis) blew me away!
reply

Lady Bird, sympathetic? I guess to some. But that's Greta Gerwig thing anyway.
Anyway, I feel like River Phoenix so far below is worse than getting no mention at all.

reply

Carrie performance is beyond great, is so perfect, what a gem of a movie it is. And to think that I just watched this great film just a month ago for the very first time.
reply

I love Reese as Tracy. The author of Election has a sequel and itd be fun for her to revisit the roll as Tracy is older (and not a politician) in the new book.
reply

The fact that not a single person from The Breakfast Club was on this list, if that movie was released now, if you ask me that movie would sweep the Oscars
reply

I love Hailee Steinfeld's performance in The Edge of Seventeen her acting was amazing and the character was so flawed and relatable l, it's why I love the movie
reply

James Dean doesn't vaguely look like a teenager in Rebel without a Cause. He looks 30. (He's 24) Great performance, but I never bought he was a teenager.
reply

How about Ray Winstone in Scum, Fernando De Silva in Pixote, and Jean-Pierre Laud in The 400 Blows? Then again, maybe those aren't really teen movies?
reply

river phoenix did die young but it wasn't after Stand by Me, he was around 23 when we died after doing several more movies, but definitely way too soon
reply

Ariyan A. Johnson in Just Another Girl on the I. R. T. should've been on the list or been an honorable mention. Very underrated film and performance.
reply

I would say Jack OConnell in the horror film Eden lake. I followed his career ever since from skins to his Hollywood career one of my favourite actors
reply

Raising Victor Vargas - Victor Rasuk portrayal of a young man coming of age in the Lower East. Side in the early Aughs was fantastic
reply

I clicked as soon as I saw Reese Witherspoon in the thumbnail. She killed it in Election, this underrated satire. Great list
reply

You missed Emma Stone in Easy A and Lindsay Lohan in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen. No mention of Mean Girls either!
reply

Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee the evolution of teenage mutant ninja turtles! :(: (: (: (: (: (: (: (: (: (: (: (: (: (: (: (: (.
reply

Id add in the honorable mentions Keke Palme in Akeelah and the Bee. Those facial expression really sold her performance.
