The big shock in ATONEMENT is that Briony is dying and will lose her faculties. Rather than the fantasy ending with the younger characters, the book had a better ending with dying Briony meeting her stroke-crippled brother who greets her with his pet-name from her childhood
Glad you go back as far as HAROLD AND MAUDE, but you should consider the likes of BRIEF ENCOUNTER (Laura attempted suicide, LETTER FROM AN UNKNOWN WOMAN (the 'by the time you read this I shall be dead' moment, or Stefan learning he had a son who's now dead, or his learning that John knew who Lisa was all the time and said nothing - well, no, but he could have written something down)

What a lame list.
I need to add that Shailene did two other movies which wouldve fit the list. The last letter from your lover in which she has a forbidden love affair and endings/beginnings in which the reveal of the father to be is shocking although kinda obvious.

I think an honorable mention should be La La Land when they play the movie at the end as if the stayed together and then jump back to present with Emma Stone watching Ryan Gossling playing the piano at his bar while sitting next to her husband.
