You lot had missed my number one choice: Emma Watson as Belle in Beauty and the Beast (2017, Disney, Bill Confon, Alan Menken.
Yes, in all candour (if a bit after the fact, I have a poignantly sentimental bias (well, it's poignant to me. Also, I have not seen the other contenders herein.
I love this topic, though wistful pangs temper my delight. I wish I could find a good voice coach--I have an extraordinarily wide vocal range! --and an agent for my writing. This would be where I truly would shine. Both would be outstanding!

In my opinion, Reese Witherspoon's portrayal of June Carter-Cash was lousy. Her country accent was layed on too thick. Jewel was a much more convincing June Carter-Cash in the made for t. v. movie. Same goes for Joaquin Phoenix Portrayal of Johnny Cash. He was too monotone. The actor who played Johnny Cash in the TV movie along with Jewel was much better. I don't know his name but he was a more convincing Johnny Cash than Joaquin.

He hasn't sung in a movie (yet, but Jake Gyllenhaal has a fantastic voice. He was cast in Little Shop of Horrors at the Public Theater, and with no history of being a trained singer, delivered Broadway-caliber vocals. Then he went on to star in Sunday in the Park with George.
I know he bought the movie rights to Fun Home, but I don't think they've announced yet if he'll actually be starring in it. I hope so.

I am so surprised that Phoneix did not get the Oscar with Reese. People keep complaining about his bad singing voice, but come on, his impression was spot on. He sounded like Johnny Cash to a T. That is my opinion anyways.
I was shocked by how well Helena Bontham Carter could sing and now learning this was her first musical, even more astonished of her talent considering the complexity of Sondheim. Wow!

Do you really think producers would choose an actor that needs months of training before filming starts? It is notable that none of these stars have sung in any other film or anywhere else for that matter. Oh, you left out Madonna took singing lessons before appearing in Evita. There is something called dubbing and enough audio tricks to make anyone sound like anything.
reply

Called the Bradley Cooper listing, but I'm surprised Zac Efron didn't make the list or honorable mentions. The kid (from what I understand) lip synced the 1st movie but then ended up taking vocal lesson and doing the singing himself from there forward.
Or even Russel Crowe for Les Miserables let alone all the actors/actresses in that film

I say that adopting good singing habits goes a long way toward being a good singer. Stand/sit straight, inhale silently and at the proper times, don't slide into or between pitches, don't sit on the letter r, etc. Sliding pitches and loud inhaling are special effects to be used sparingly, and give an r all you've got when singing bluegrass.

Reese Witherspoon actually was afraid of performing onstage in front of many People. Probably because of panic attacks. It must have been nerve-wracking for her. Fortunately everything paid off with her Oscar win.
It's Amazing how some of these actors EARNED an Oscar nod or the Award itself for Roles requiring Singing.

Helena Bodham Carter? Really? Is that a joke? Prove herself? So youre trying to tell me she legit won the role with her singing? Amazing work paid off? We can let a lot pass as preference but this goes too far. Shock is hard these days, but you def did it. Hold fook!

Taron Edgerton - Rocketman! Taron had to work hard to pull off the more rock sounds when he was typically more a ballad style guy. Takes real talent to bring reimagined versions of beloved songs to life and win a golden globe for it.

Okay two things. 1. Audrey Hepburn didn't sing in My Fair Lady, her singing was dubbed. 2. Andrew Garfield should have won the Best Actor Oscar for his amazing performance as the late, great Jonathan Larson in Tick, Tick. Boom!
reply

It was released at the time of this video leaving Austin Butler as Elvis off this list is unforgivable. Your list is good, but so MANY are missing, and Butler is the worst absent actor who had to learn to sing for a role.
reply

The most underrated performance of the last 20 years is Andrew Garfield in tick tick boom. Before this movie I respected Garfield but this may be totally transformed my opinion about how rare an Actor of that caliber can be
reply

Sorry, but Marnie Nixon was the singer whose voice was dubbed for Audrey Hepburn's in My Fair Lady. Audrey was a great star, but could not sing. Marnie Nixon dubbed singing voices for many movies.
reply

Yeah Audrey should not even be an honorable mention so her voice was mainly dubbed by another singer. Whatever happened to Taron Edgerton or Gerard Butler or even Adam Driver in the recent Annette.
reply

I was blown away by the actor in the movie Elvis. His singing and dancing were amazing and he got the character of Elvis down pat.
Also was very impressed by Oscar Isaac in inside Llewyn Davis.

reply

I do not believe the Helena Bonham Carter part because the Corpse bride came out in 2005, and sweeney todd the demon barber on fleet street came out in 2007, she had to sing in the Corpse Bride
reply

I saw the title of the video and the first person that came to mind was Gerald Butler for 2004s Phantom of the Opera film. I know he wasnt great, but he did learn to sing for the part.

Helena Bonham Carter?
She nearly destroyed the complete movie with her missing singing abilities. Worst miscasting of a musical role ever. Maybe except Russell Crowe as Javert.

reply

It's good to remind people that singing is something you can/must learn to do and work to get better at. It isn't usually something that just comes out of a talented person's throat.
reply

Good choices. Under honorable mentions you have Katherine Hepburn for My Fair Lady. It is my understanding her voice was dubbed with Julie Andrews voice for that movie.
reply

I LOVE Andrew Garfield. I am so happy that he got the Oscar nomination, BUT he should have won the Oscar. He is BRILLIANT in Tick Tick. BOOM. I LOVED this movie.
reply

Emilia Jones in CODA - she learned to sing, as well as sign language and fishing, all at the age of 17. Very impressive, and a fantastic performance!
reply

Bradley Cooper really gave everything he had for ASIB, his dedication to that movie is nothing short of amazing and it really paid off.
reply

idk if they had to learn how to sing for that role but ewan mcgregor's and nicole kidman's vocals in moulin rouge! are immaculate
reply

No. Helena Bonham Carter was the worst vocal performance in Sweeney Todd. She acted it well, but her singing was shit. Just no.
reply

love love Andrew Garfield!
just checking: didn't Hugh Grant also study to sing for Music and Lyrics with Drew Barrymore?

reply

What about Anne Hathaway in Les Miserables? That live singing and raw role was vastly different than her singing before.
reply

Audrey Hepburn never sang in My fair lady. She was dubbed but she does sing Moon River in Breakfast at Tiffanys.
