These musicals are forever timeless. For this list, well be looking at the most memorable musical films whose songs, style and subject matter make them a pleasure to watch in the past, present and future. Our countdown includes Grease, Chicago, West Side Story, and more! What do YOU think is the most timeless movie musical?
Date: 2023-11-21

This list grossly favors inferior modern musicals over classics. Singin in the Rain, The Wizard of Oz, The Sound of Music, Grease, these are all iconic musicals that deserve recognition that are also on this list. Fiddler on the Roof and West Side Story are brilliant even though they wouldnt necessarily be on my top 10. But no Fred Astaire? No Busby Berkeley? Here are just a few of the greatest musicals ever made that have been ignored here:
Fantasia
My Fair Lady
The Band Wagon
Oklahoma
Gold Diggers of 1933
Swing Time
On the Town
White Christmas
Easter Parade
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
Broadway Melody of 1940
Meet Me in St Louis
An American in Paris
I could go on and on. There are dozens of classic musicals that are better than Moulin Rouge, Hairspray, Enchanted or Chicago. Heck, Id rather watch Mothra than Chicago any day!

We can not stop the remaking of classic musicals? The owners (corporations) have an interest in making money. But there is a responsibility to future generations to preserve the past (as it was) so we can learn from it (appreciate it. It lets us see our path to the present. The label of classic might be a way of saving our path of human social growth. If classic only becomes a label, what good is it? In 2100 will anyone care about these classics? Or, : Are the remakes just another element of 1984?

Great list, timeless ones have to be wholesome, that's what makes a show timeless, they'll always be acceptable in any time. Agree with many but the 1950s West Side Story isn't timeless, that's why Spielberg updated it. Moulin Rouge is already outdated and unwatchable, and Chicago is a show that says girl power = look I've got no clothes on which rightly doesn't wash anymore. Singing in the Rain is great but time will slate the delight on Gene Kelly's eyes when he ruins his co-stars career.

The Music Man. Not only does it have musical set pieces like Pick A Little/Talk A Little/GOodnight my someone. West Side Story, just because. The old Fred Astaire musicals. And the Shall We Dance number from THe King and I - when Yul Brynner puts his hand on Debbie''s waist is one of the most erotic moments ever filmed. And, of course, Fiddler. And Meet Me in Saint Louis - with the original lyrics to Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas And the underlying nastiness of Cabaret.

I can understand Singin' in the Rain being #1 over The Sound of Music, even thought TSOM is my personal pick, but West Side Story #2? Nah. I love it but it didn't age as well as the other two in the top 3 imo.
Also the lack of more classic musicals is very sad because so many of them made the genre what it is. I love Enchanted, for example, but there's no way we can call it memorable yet and not when so many of the honorable mentions deserved and actual spot in the top 10.

Movie musicals that are timeless
Greatest Showman- showing that acceptance towards those who are different and that their inner beauty is whats important
Across the Universe- bringing out the Beatles songs alive with creative imagery
Begin Again- from Simple songs that can show people can be given second chances to change themselves

I think it depends on the individual what is memorable to them. Myself, Xanadu and The Pirate Movie will always be memorable to me. Then again, I remember the Elvis movies growing up. Probably why to this date I still have a place in my heart for musicals. My honorable mention would be The Rocky Horror Picture Show, both original and remake.

I love all of those movies. As the ultimate disney fan living in a part of Europe where a disney movie is not considered a movie at all, it's just a disney expression that means something you're forced to put up with because you have a toddler to raise. I'm so glad that Mary poppins and enchanted made it in the list, thank you so much

What does timeless mean? Will these movies still be popular in another 50 years? 100 years? I have my doubts. They're all good musicals, but I could come up with a list of my own that was different. There's no Barbra on there. What about Hello, Dolly! Classic Barbra, directed by Gene Kelly, one of the greatest musicals of all time.

This is one of those lists where you can probably do a part 2 (10 More Movie Musicals That Are Timeless) and still have many worthy contenders left over. But I will add that, ironically, The Wizard of Oz stops being a musical in its final third. After King of the Forest, there are no songs!

Their are so many musicals that deserved to be on the list more than most of these that I was very disappointed. Phantom of the Opera and White Christ are 2 of my favorites. It looked like they were more interest in diversity than quality.

Funny Girl not even mentioned? And speaking of oldies and FUNNY what about Funny Face with Fred Astaire and Audrey Hepburn. GIGI not even mentioned? I'll give you one saving grace: You didn't mention LA LA LAND. Thank You.
reply

Not surprised and I agree with Singin' In the Rain. But I think Hair and Oklahoma should have made the list. Moulin Rouge did not contain original music so that seems like it shouldn't have been included.
reply

The last 15 minutes of La La Land make it timeless to me. It's a bittersweet end, a gorgeous salute to musicals of the 50s, and a showcase reminding us of the great score, all rolled into one.

My favourite film of old time musical film and I do not get fed up of watching is my fair lady with Audrey Hepburn followed by mama Mia and dirty dancing I just love them films sad but so good
reply

The amazing Julie Andrews is really a great musical star! I love all her musicals, including Victor/Victoria and Thoroughly Modern Millie. To me, The Sound of Music is number 1.
reply

I feel like enchanted should have been an honorable mention and any of the honorable mention should have been on the top ten list, also no producers or rocky horror
reply

Ya forgot both The Nightmare Before Christmas--all-time greatest cult movie n 1776--movie about the birth o' The Single Greatest Nation of All Time: The USA!
reply

Brigadoon, Camelot, South Pacific. An American in Paris better choice of Gene Kelly musical. Enchanted is cute but no where near the caliber of the above.
reply

Trivia. Poor Gene Kelly was quite ill with either flu or pneumonia when he shot the Singin in the Rain dance number but like a true trooper, he carried on.
reply

any disney adaptation legally blonde newsies la boheme les mis wicked the wiz south pacific any rodgers and hammerstein's adaptations oliver! all missed here
reply

I haven't heard of a few of these, but am shocked that My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins, and The King and I didn't even make an honorable mention; golly.
reply

Moulin Rouge and even Grease can't hold a candle to Fiddler on the Room, The Music Man, The Kind and I, Oklahoma, or 7 brides for 7 brothers.
reply

With the obvious exception of the class that shines through the years from Singin'in the Rain, this is very much a younger person's list IMO.
reply

LIKE the countdown list I've heard/seen so far, but how is My Fair Lady not in your Top 10 of Memorable Movies? Not even n honorable mention.
reply

197: I watched DreamGirls when I was a kid on DVD. Jennifer Hudson is my idol. Even have her autograph on two free CDs of hers from mail
reply

I love all of them. did not expect #1 to be Singing in the Rain with all those others not at the top (even the honorable mentions)
reply

Les Miserables and Muppets Christmas Carol are two timeless stories of redemption that ought to have been in the reckoning IMO.
reply

I'm going to state a very unpopular opinion. Singin' In The Rain is overrated. It's good, but it's not even in my top 20.
reply

Overall I think you picked the best movies. Problem is there are so many you will definitely leave some great ones out.
